Conca vs Heppell vs Atley
Which of these 3 would you want?

with all these 3 being put in different polls I thought I may aswell just combine the 3 of them.

Atley has actually gone backwards when you think about it, playing the role we gave to a 1st year player. Heppell has now moved to the midfield and played some good games and some poor games. As you would expect for a second year player. Conca is ahead of Atley in this regard too.

Heppell has some major weaknesses and that is getting exposed - badly at the moment.

1) He has no right foot - mids are forcing him onto his non prefferred - and it is terrible.
2) He does shepard - he would prefer to run ahead and get the next touch than support the ball carrier.
3) He is not good defensivley - teams are playing through the mid he goes to - lucky Wells did his calf as he was embarrassing Dyson.

I agree with your board - he is better sitting behind the ball and being a loose sweeper. He is not a mid.

You are right though, young players are better suited sitting back getting the cheap ball. It helps their stats, Heppell did it last year. Atley this year. Conca has been back for a few games but he's mostly played midfield. Atley is the only one so far that hasn't cut it in the middle so Brad did what was best for him and moved him back. It was a smart move from your much maligned coach, it has helped improve his confidence considerably.

Looking at your midfield you really have not many options to play a non mid in there. Drinking dish water is better than dying of thirst.

It only looks that way because he creates so much space in his first few steps, then streams through the 50 hitting up leading targets.

Watched the game again last night - 2 things really stood and showed how poor Heppell can be.

1) Last quarter the difference was 3 points and a throw in at the Roos forward pocket - Heppell goes to Gisbson and puts his arm across him. The ball is thrown in and Heppell does not go with his man but watches the flight of the ball - Gibson gets an easy clearance in space and handballs it to Wright who kicks a goal - 9 points up. He had to go with his player instead of ball watching.

2) Last quarter back to 3 points - Heppell gets a handball recieved in the forward pocket and has time to spot up Baugley who is free out side the 50 - his kick was terrible and set his team mate up - turnover and Hanson runs in and kicks a goal. Back to 9 points and Essendon do not score again in the game.
