Except for the slight issue of Richmond holding pick 1 in the PSD last year

We also stood to lose Jack Graham as a FA signing because he was the buy one get one free part of the Baker trade
I've heard this narrative a bit but didn't we sign Jack Graham even before the trade period started (in that period when Free Agency period had started but not Trade Period)? So he would have bailed on the deal after he signed if Baker wasn't signed in the way that he liked?

Apart from the top 4, are the others draftable?
Perhaps some Jake Catons among them because we can't take them all. Thankfully we might be able to accommodate the decent ones if we continue to have the 4 extra rookie spots.
State squad of 45 of the best prospects, having 8-10 in that group is a fair indication of their quality as 17yo's.
I am not further in the know, but would suspect 1/2 would make it, this seems to be a more talented squad than previous NGA lists to date.

My mate wants me to ask if we would be interested in Arie Shoenmaker from the Saints. Just got delisted.

I remember I wanted him later in the draft a few years back. 20yr old, booming left foot kick and projected as a similar type to Hurn at the time. 60m drop punts are an average kick for him. Wouldve been great for goal kickouts. Was a bit of a bad boy though (Like Darling was).

My answer is we dont have too many list spots and probably want mids.

From what i've gathered from saints fans, he's just a very poor defender. He's tall and not that agile so needs to play tall and cant slope off on a flank. So, yes he's a great kick but he's an arrogant loose unit who can't defend.

What Adelaide and Ah Chee are doing this year, is exactly what we should have done last year with Liam Baker.
I appreciate that it was shitty that Hawthorn ****ed us over last year and forced us into a position that we had to split pick 3 to land Baker but can we just move on from that already?

The bloke came in and delivered exactly what was promised on the box. Delivered much needed leadership and won the B&F.

Fact that we were able to pick up Jobe Shanahan at pick 30 should remove any sour taste in your mouth. Plus, we've also got Bo Allan, who despite his absolute shocker of a first season looks like a powerful bull in the Yeo mould.

Let's move on! Dicking clubs around with the PSD only serves to sow discontent.

Was only introduced in 2023

Introduced to discourage bids I guess
I think it's less about whether he's worth that contract fullstop and moreso whether that contract is worth it for WCE, in our current position.

Not too dissimilar to it being too risky for us to match OA's contract offer, whereas Brisbane are in a position that they can absorb the risk/reward.

Ah Chee is a v good player, and the perfect type for a team in their window such as Adelaide. They're a good enough team right now that the opportunity to have him help them win a flag outweighs the risk of bringing in a 29yo on a 5yr deal or whatever.

If Jake Waterman wasn’t on our list we’d have signed up Oscar regardless of risk.

On the other hand a big part of Baker’s value is his character and leadership qualities.
Annoying as it was, not wanting Richmond to get dudded is a reflection of said character

Signed on as a FA on the Monday - same day the trade period started and a week before we’d finalised the Baker trade

So yes, it would’ve been too late for him to back out if we didn’t sign Baker

Understand though that when the club talked about making a commitment this was likely part of it. We gave an undertaking that we’d get it done and ultimately were true to our word - so yeah we overpaid but unlike other clubs over the last couple of days, we did what we said we’d do

Whether that counts for anything in AFL land I have no idea but I prefer the club to conduct itself with a degree of decency than clubs that turn their back on undertakings they’ve made

So let me get this straight..

If this imaginary 5 year deal figure everyone is attaching to Ah Chee is "silly and irresponsible" for West Coast to pay for, with it's oodles of salary cap space and no talent to spend it on..

And yet completely normal and reasonable for the Crows, an actual functioning AFL team that isn't a basket case to pay for... Is that correct?

I get Clarke may have had discussions and put a line through Ah Chee earlier in the the year, I get he wasn't realistically in their sights and they've moved on.. But guess what, things change.

He now comes FREE compared to having to pony up picks to get him here initially under earlier discussions. He's a best 22 player you're leaving on the shelf because what... You haven't planned for it? Well be fluid, be flexible, get planning.

What exactly is the downside here? "Omg Ah Chee could leave or request a trade in a year.." So? It's not like we coughed up anything for him. So he leaves and we're in the exact same situation as we're in right now. Big whoop.

If Ah Chee is that stubborn about getting to Adelaide he shouldn't have let himself come out of contract where he's forced to enter the PSD in a NATIONAL competition. Sorry cob, that's draft tampering. There's 18 teams that can use the PSD, it's not just for your destination club to nominate.
Wasting your breath DS. Good list managers are flexible and get creative.

I am kind of fond of good kicking arrogant loose units myself.
Lewis Jetta was an elite kick, but not a good defender. Nic Nat was an elite tap ruckman, but didn't know where to position himself in games. Liam Duggan is an elite defender, but is slow and is good at kicking to the opposition. Sandy Brock is a good defender, but needs to put on at least a 100kgs, maybe more. Jack Darling was a great forward, but had the occasional brain fart. Not many in the game are elite in everything. Maybe he doesn't fit our rebuild. Anyway Geelong will probably get him and turn him into a star.

Should talk to Ah chee and say we will pick you up for a year, help us out and we'll trade you to Adelaide for nothing next year and if you enjoy it back in your home state we'll give you a good extension. I'm sure he would enjoy being in here and it'll be less stress than being picked up by norf or any of the other 15ish clubs before the Crows

Sad but true.

We could certainly do with someone with amazing kicking but I havnt been following Shoenmaker since he was drafted. Sounds like @TOA knows more than me about him. I don't care about his indiscretions as a teen. But if as Toa says hes a shit defender, hard to argue with that. And we really need mids anyway.

I'm not up with the rules like some but sounds like he has and is allowed to set his contract price and length. Hes set it at 5yrs which is crazy for a 28+yr old. Pass personally. We have enough options in the small forward position.

Context ?
Man can't talk properly.. It's like the only prerequisite to be on radio these days it seems.

Just the mumbles and bumbles and stopping mid sentence and contradicting himself over and over again.

Going on about ahchee and Merrett and taking the stupidest stance on both issues

This is the bit I don't understand and I am a bit iffy on it sound like draft tampering to me

So Ah Chee out of contract can't get a deal done with Brisbane and the crows....I get that

Ah Chee wants to go to the crows I get that...reading the crows board for family reasons ..thats fair

But the crows are offering a big contract to scare others away okay...we can match and other clubs or go higher but this offering contract and length is what I find concerning .....if the Crows and Ah Chee can do it whats the point of the draft and the PSD ??...why not other clubs do it as well ......"okay Sydney we can't come to a deal for this player" we will take him in the PSD and give him more money than you can offer due to the salary cap ??

whats the point of the drafts ??? a player nominates where he wants to go and the contract length and money gets him there ???...thats premier league euro soccer stuff

can some one explain to me this process ?

And then we trade him to Adelaide next year and get more draft assets prior to Tassie coming in.

He is a free hit. Cap space is one thing we have since we have to pay Reid draftee rates in 2026

Think Luke Ball when he left St Kilda. An uncontracted player who is already in the AFL system who enters the draft can set his terms for his contract.

It’s one of those things that exists so the AFL doesn’t get sued for restraint of trade I guess.

The pre-season “draft” ceased being a draft a long time ago. It is now sparingly used, primarily for uncontracted players whose trade request fell though to get to where they want to go, as will be the case with Ah Chee.
So the crows can buy Ah Chee without trading ...just by offering more money than anyone else ??

In theory there are about 13 clubs who could draft Ah Chee ahead of them provided they are willing to match the contracted terms
