Current Draft Picks:
Round 1: 1, 2, 13
Round 2: 34, 41
Round 3: 53, 58 (These picks are in excess of available list spots so will be forfeited if we don’t consolidate our 2025 picks up the order or trade some for future picks)

List Spots Available (39 of 48):
• Main list (33 of 38) - 5* (in: Starcevich, Young out: Allen, Ryan, Chesser, Hunt, Petruccelle, Jamieson)
• Cat A rookie list (5 of 8) - 3* (in: Robertson (pending), out: Rawlinson)
• Cat B rookie list (1 of 2) - 2 (out: Livingstone)

* Based on Dewar being upgraded after the maximum 3 years on the rookie list. Hutchinson may also have been upgraded but this isn’t confirmed - if it is we will have 4 main and 4 rookie list spots open

* Matthew Clarke has stated we have 5 main list spots

If you’re unhappy with anything Clarke said in that interview then you will never be pleased

Quantum leap from this time last year in the same opening interview

Early days obviously but clearly some lessons were learnt. May it continue

If i was Allen id be pissed about the Lions being difficult because him becoming a Lion is a simple FA and should be done straight away.
I don't think he would care that much since he has completely checked out from the Eagles, and is already a fully fledged Lion. Unlike Baker or Starc who were/are seemingly still prepared to stay if a deal fell through.

Clarke legitimately looks like he'd have piddle running down the inside of his leg during that interview.

The Ryan and Chesser answers were decent enough, but he certainly didn't give me any confidence as far as Brisbane and Starcevich go. Gee whiz.

He shit the bed a bit at the start with the comments about pick 23, 16 and "helping them out" but improved as the interview went on with the comments about Ryan, Chesser and the academy kids. Not sure why he didn't respond with more enthusiasm when asked about trading up, he should've been unequivocal and said we'd be considering using the priority pick and hawks picks to do so. He should already trying to sort a deal out with GC for either their pick or the flanders pick. Still sounded nervous and hesitant, doesn't particularly fill me with confidence for the trade period.

Havent had the chance to watch or listen yet and I have no idea what to expect

Loved it.
Must say I haven't watched much of Clarke, but he said most of the right things.
16 not on the table for BRI, Chesser deal will meet somewhere in the middle.
Ryan is contracted and happy to keep him so STK need to come to us with the right deal.
Not too far apart with Young so will be easily done.
If we feel the player at the draft is the player we like, we will be happy to bid on them.

He looked nervous for mine, not comfortable on camera.
I reckon the boys running the narrative this morning, Woosha and Pyke have said to Clarke this is what needs to be said!!
Will see how this week plays out but behind closed doors I think we get all he deals done and the picks will be reasonable each way.

22/23 for Starcevich, Dev gets delisted or we have a swap of late picks if we need picks for a couple of NGA/FS players.
Chesser is worth CAR pick 40.
Pick 40 for T Young so they get their FS in Kellaway and maybe a future pick back F4th, works both ways.
Shots fired at BRI but more of a .22 than a shotgun with Clarke imo.

I'd really like us to prioritise GCS Pick 7;

If not, Carlton's Pick 10. Trades for Chesser, Ryan and bringing in Young will be done in due course. There isn't much to worry about here.

If either of these can be done today or by tomorrow, I would be happy.
GCS Deal; 1, 2, 7
Carlton Deal; 1, 2, 10

One of the best things Clarke said was hopefully we will bring in Young and Starcevich in and add to our back 6. Sounds like we haven’t sold him the dream of playing midfield at least.

I reckon that’s going to free up Baker for fwd/mid role and McCarthy for a midfield role for 2026.

Starcevich - Edwards - Ginbey
Hough - Young - Duursma*
Bench- Duggan/Bo
Depth/Wing- Cole/Brock/Dewar/Maric/Yeo*

We can't afford to be kicking top 5 picks down the road in our position, we'd need to be getting something else reasonable back to use this year as well but I don't think melbourne have anything else of use.
I hear you. I was curious as I saw the suggestion in Keys' thread, Melbourne's F1 should be at the pointy end, and we have a ton of flexibility in how we use our draft hand this year.

There is now a mountain of background checks that ALL Clubs do post Combine.

These background checks are both thorough and often address stuff that you would be surprised about.
To give a few examples:

Family history and it can go back a few generations.
Family dynamics and parent and sibling relationships.
School research, teachers, peers etc.
Social media.

I'm not pulling these things out of thin air, when I coached kids that were in the draft cohort I got lots of calls and even face to face talks with some of the Clubs that I had a more expansive relationship with, often discussing some of the above.
I was surprised at the depth of some of the digging that was done and that I was asked to comment on.

So sure all Clubs would have there board pretty well set based on pure talent, but it will also have multiple resets based on the background intel analysis.

Club Boards WONT be locked until four or five days before the draft.

Most of what Clarke said was fine especially towards the end. Could have been slightly more unequivocal regarding pick 16.

I hope Twomey asks what our Draft strategy is so we can answer there is some really attractive players to select with one including Annable.

He doesn't have the strategic aptitude of Tywin Lannister, but I'm glad he discussed picking players regardless of whether they were from Academies or not. Subtle dig at the Brisbane recruiting manager digghead.
