I was there ... and most admit I was surprised by the number of empty seats. BASS were reporting there were only about 2500 tickets available today, yet there were 10,000 empty seats......

I was there for Auskick at half-time and it was the members and the upper rows of the northern grandstand that were notably empty. 8,000 unsold seats 1hr before the game according to one of the redcoats. There were thousands inside the stadium sheltering from the cold and watching it on TV, rather than taking their seats.

How do you work that out? You can't sell out a 50k stadium but you would expect go get over 80k if the Stadium was the size of the G?

Are you stupid? The "G" holds 100k whilst AAMI holds 51k. One local side in Adelaide = 42k crowd therefore 2 local sides in Melbourne should be 2 x 42k = 84k, given the "G" can hold that number. Quite simple, I would have thought.

PS : AFL and MCC members don't pay for these finals whilst AAMI SANFL members do. I know I'm an AFL member based in Adelaide plus a Cat 1 SANFL AAMI member.

Port has had this nonsense from Victorian supporters in recent years too which is why I am replying on this thread. I was at Telstra Dome last year when we played the Kangaroos. We constituted about a quarter of an 18,000 strong crowd.
It was the only game of football in Melbourne that day but the turnout was pathetic. The Saints/Melbourne turn-out was only incrementally better last night. I'd expect it to be better for a PF. It was for Port. It will be for the Crows.

But why would you think we can get 84k to the "G" comprising just Adeliade supporters (thats would be about 8% of the total Adelaide population). Only one local played side in Adelaide against two local sides in Melbourne.

What is the issue?

Its great that 4000+ (maybe 10000 but I doubt it as 50000 at AAMI is beyond a normal 'sellout') are available for the walk up gate.

I think the Saints V Melbourne sold <70 % of max capacity - thats a worry.

As the AFL said - beating the 19,000ish at the NRL is all that matters, and every AFL final will do that.

Plus why pay $50 a ticket when its on free to air - and (insert fuel/interest rate/ etc excuse here)

Football fans aren't as careless with their money as the AFL might wish. They won't pay what the AFL is asking, that's why they haven't filled the grounds so far this weekend.

The AFL Grand Final will always sell out whatever price the AFL set, but the first and second week of the finals and even the Preliminary Finals are a different matter. Don't treat people with contempt, Demetriou, and think they'll just buy a ticket, whatever the cost, just because their team is playing. The absence of 10,000 today and 20-30,000 last night tells me that the product on offer is not worthwhile in the eyes of some supporters.

It didn't sell out because the game was stupidly scheduled on a Saturday afternoon.

I went, but half of my mate's were playing finals for their amateur footy teams, and half of the girls I know were playing netball. Plus the Royal Show was on, plus it's Saturday afternoon so a lot of people are actually working.

The AFL are pricks, they know Saturday Afternoons in Adelaide never go down well, but the ********s schedule it there anyway.

I think the worry would be that Adelaide got LESS to this match then the R19 clash between the SAME two sides......they beat this figure 5 times during the H/A season.....they won, but who gives a ****e, the point of the thread was talking about the relatively low drawing finals match..

Btw- Melbourne v St.kilda's crowd figure was excellent, considering the horrible weather in Melbourne on Friday and Friday night.....Melbourne being a fairly low drawing side at the MCG when compared to Coll, Ess, Rich, even Carlton of 5 or so years back.
67.5k..........Stkilda has 32k members, Melbourne 24.5k.......+ neutrals, regular fans....... - those who dislike the wet= pretty damn good crowd....

Dont think many Freo members made the effort to travel considering they are going to get a home final and the empty seats at the northern end - and just see how many turn up tomorrow regardless of the price. I would predict over 75000 with the Pies back where they belong.

Melbourne has 4 times more people and 5 times more teams (Geelong included) then Adelaide so theoretically there should be less people at a game here...

There were more people at the NRL final in Brisbane then the game in Adelaide. Not selling out the game is a very poor effort from the adelaide fans.

I honestly think the AFL would be pretty happy with 42K considering:

1. Crows are guaranteed another home final this year
2. Very few interstaters come to support their team against Adelaide over here
3. Even a Pies v Essendon final would not sell out in week 1

Exactly! Ripping the public off with exhorbitant ticket prices is the reason why there were empty seats - nothing to do with Joe Blow's Seaton Ramblers in the final at the same time, or Fathers Day, or the Royal Show.

For a city of 1.2 million - with about 70% barracking for Adelaide, there are plenty of people who could have gone but chose not to. Why? Not willing to fork out what Demetriou is asking?

The AFL have to take a long hard look at themselves - not Adelaide supporters!
