I could see it. They want an easy, non confrontational decision and removing a guy who may not have done anything wrong, but just got squeezed out by the numbers is a tough one to have.
Its coaching by fear

Yes I buy its part of Nicks DNA but I cant se the group think going along aith it

It's a hard rational to understand in a professional sporting organisation.
I thought that is why the head coach gets paid the big bucks, to make decisions based on what is best for the team.
It looks more like an u10 amateur football club problem

A couple of years ago when Pedlar looked good, he got suspended for a sling tackle and got a week.
He missed the next game and McHenry came in.
Ned played the game of his life and got 20 odd disposals and a couple of goals and actually looked like a good footballer.
But Pedlar came straight back in the next week and McHenry got dropped.
I think everyone understood, that is what happens in professional sport

That could be the dumbest logic of all time by a coaching staff.
Pick someone shit because he’s easy to drop.
Honestly it’s not believable in the slightest.
You play talent and if they perform you drop the next worst performing bloke.

You don't think coaches are aware of public pressure? Or are completely oblivious to it?

I would have thought Nicks' comments about the guys on the fringes shows they're acutely aware of the fan talk, the push for certain players to get an opportunity.

Not a stretch to think they'd maybe hose those outside expectations down a fraction, particularly when (in their minds) it's with selection calls that make no discernible difference to the result

So how does picking Murphy instead of Draper help with public pressure?

Because a couple of good glimpses from Draper as sub and people want to see more. Why is he getting dropped when he looked good? Why is he getting dropped when other Top 10 picks aren't?

A few touches on a half forward flank at Noarlunga... out of sight, out of mind.

Exactly

Can’t drop Draper fans will go ape
Can’t select Murphy fans will go ape

Besides, if they’re worried about what we think they’re not fit to do the job.
That's a given isn't it?

Are people arguing that this couldn't possibly be true because Nicks and co are shrewd thinkers about the game and always do the right thing?

Those who wanted Dowling in last year mustn't have been watching the SANFL games remember

People are arguing it’s not true because picking a player just to be dropped over a better option is batshit crazy

To me, the worst thing is, he will get picked again late this season and will do well and Nicks will say "we were right to give him some magoo time where he rounded his game.

It's not a better option in the minds of the coaches.

For them it's neither here nor there. A bits and pieces role that any one of a number of players could do and will have no impact on the outcome of the game.

Option 1 potentially comes with a future selection headache
Option 2 doesn't

Edit - Good coaches would want the headache, but ours aren't

Anyone think Power make the 8 from here?

I thought I would share this as I was quite interested to hear it.

I was talking to a guy who used to be on a coaching panel at an SA AFL club, and I was ranting about how Murphy got into the AFL team when there was a spot open, rather than one of the three players who should have come in, Draper, Nank or Edwards.
What he said made my jaw hit the ground. He said he believes that Murph came in over those two as he was easier to send back to the SANFL. If they promoted Draper for instance, and he had a blinder in the two games he came in for, then it makes it difficult for them to remove him. It puts their selection committee under pressure to keep him in, as they displays they are the future.
Murphy on the other hand can be dropped even if he had a decent game, as he is viewed by most people as not in the long term plans.
I asked him if there would be any truth that this would play a role in their decision making, and he said absolutely, 100% issues like that are part of the deliberations.

This isn’t surprising at all.

No doubt it’s dumb, but it’s entirely believable. We are on record as valuing non-footballing inputs, continuity, experience, running patterns, shape keeping etc. Our coaches have a fairly firm view of what their best 23 is and they want that group to play as much together as possible. Having a wiz kid come in for a couple of decent games is uncomfortable for them because they inherently don’t trust him and want to get straight back to the more ‘reliable’ performer who runs to the right spots when not impacting the game and knows where to point.

They are 3 games plus % outside the 8 they have Eagles (H), Hawks (A), Adelaide (A), Cats (A), Fremantle (H), Carlton (A) and Gold Coast (H).

You could see them winning 4 at most and gives them 11 wins. This season you may actually need 14 to make the 8.

Not happening.

Thats completely different though, that’s trusting a player more.
Not bringing a player in because he’s easier to drop becuase he won’t perform.
They clearly trust Murphy more than Draper, that’s not disputable.

Isn’t the argument that we’d not deliberately play a lesser player? Once you agree with that then it opens up more than one reason why we’d do it. And one is that in terms of PR, it’s much easier to drop Murphy when the injured/suspended player returns.
