If only we drafted better 2014-2017.

Considering our finishing position - I don't think we did terribly during these years:

2014 - Jake Lever - huge tick. Mitch McGovern at 43 huge tick. ROB in the rookie draft - tick.
2015 - Milera Looking likely until injury. Doedee at 17 tick. Greenwood and Keath in Rookie Drafts - tick.
2016 - Not a great year - Gooch was a failure at 16 but we didn't really have
2017 - one pick in the top 35 and that was FOG at 11.

Once again - its the losing of all the quality players that walked out on us that hurt.

He’s got his years wrong, 16-19 except for Fog mostly sucked. But losing players also hurt, no wonder we’ve sucked. Poor drafts and losing players.

Jake and Mitch are no longer here, so they aren't ticks.

The guy drafted in the 2007 draft? That has no relevance to the discussion. May as well bring up Modra.

False equivalence there. We got 8 seasons from Patrick, some of them really good.

McGovern was on our list for 4 seasons and Lever for 3.

Ben Davis lasted longer.
Different recruiters doesn't matter. The point is you can't retroactively diminish a recruiters work because a player leaves. Their job is to get talented players through the door. After that it's up to the club to keep them.

Unless it's a Tanner Bruhn situation where the lad clearly didn't want to be drafted interstate.

Even with that exception, I still wouldn't go too hard on GWS's recruiters unless there was a home grown NSW talent of equal quality that they skipped over.

Recruiters should not be forced to take lesser players. A system that better compensates the original team or disincentivises poaching recent draftees is an option. The AFL just prefers the current system because it's a funnel connected to Victorian teams.
