I think Selwood is the better player as he has more impact on the game. Swan may have better statistics, but stats only tell half the story imo.

You want to say Selwood is easily the better player. But consider the following.

Swan has more possessions, more contested possessions, more goals, more assists, more marks, more i50s.

Selwood has more tackles, better DE%, less clangers.

Swan for me

I watch selwood play every single week
never has a man around the ground and when he does he gets beaten
when manned up at stoppages usually gets the clearance player who needs to win the footy (and usually does ie lenny hayes)

Looks very good playing as a 5th onballer does selwood

definately swan
more of every stat and gets the tag

Swan is up there in most stats in the game. I don't think he'll catch Franklin in clangers though. And probably won't get as many tackles as Kirk and Bolton.

Let's see.

#1 in kicks
#14 in handballs
#1 in disposals
#3 in contested disposals
#7 in marks
#4 in i50s
#5 in goal assists
#1 in goal assists for a midfielder

Yeah, I guess you're right, but I think I'll stick with our high possession, clearance winning, gut running, goal assisting and goal kicking half forward flanker. ;)
Joel Selwood has just turned 21,at the end of his career have no doubts he will be remembered as one of the greats. Will Swan?

The umpires had their say. Podgey might rate Swan as the league's elite player this year, but they don't even rate him Collingwood's best. And it'd be pretty hard to miss a guy getting 35-40 disposals in most games.

From where I was sitting on GF day Selwood along with St Kilda's inaccurate kicking in the second quarter kept Geelong from being blown out of the water.

If you happen to watch it anytime in the future, watch Selwood's goal from the right forward flank when he ran through a pack and they just fell off him, then later in the quarter watch him on the opposite side starting in front of the members when he just kept running knocking the ball in front of himself with a pack of Saints chasing. He took possession and set up another goal. Just bloody tough and single minded.

Then see the footage of him at half time when he pulled the team in, in a tight circle around himself and gave them a pep talk, watch the team hanging off what he was saying.

Money can't buy that in a footballer, especially someone just 21 yrs old.(although I'm sure Gold Coast will be trying their best)

And there is no stat for it either...

Selwood fell away towards the end of 2009. Swan likewise.

Swan is the better player for the time being.
Not really. Selwood fell off in terms of disposals but he was just as important to his team. His Grand Final is a great example of that. On the stat sheet, he looked to have been quiet, but watching the game you could see he was clearly one of the game's most inspirational players, throwing himself at the ball at every opportunity. He slipped under the radar, but if you look closely you can see how influential he was. His finals series was certainly better than Swan's.

Swan has little way of having an impact unless he racks up disposals, whereas Selwood can have an impact without even getting a clean touch. You'd be hard pressed to find a game where Dane Swan got 24 disposals and still be a real contributor.

You are entitled to your opinion, but you're at odds with an overwhelming majority here.

I'm not at odds with the majority at all. Swan came 2nd in the MVP, so the majority would say that he was better than Selwood.

So much for the majority.

As for inspiration and all that, Selwood can have a good game and be 'inspirational' . . . he dropped off towards the end of 2009 and that's that.

Well one thing is for certain: Swan sure is better than Luke Hodge, who fell away drastically in 2009. Swan beat him in the MVP too, so I think we all know who is the better player.

I'm talking about your poll. If you're going to start a poll, don't ignore the results. Just under 75% of respondents went Selwood. The umpires certainly don't seem to rate Swan. As for the players, you don't respect the MVP because the players don't watch much footy and only go by who the media rates, remember? You seem to say that whenever the MVP votes work against your arguments...

That would show that 75% of BigFooty respondents don't rate him as highly as Selwood. It would also show that the umpires didn't vote for him in as many games as was predicted.

You got excited and rushed straight for the quick reply button didn't you? :o

Dry your eyes and read the entire post.

That post is pretty much an attack on the fallacious argument that something is right because the majority rule it so.

I'm disappointed in you.
