To force Geelong to trade you silly.

Thats what we did.
But the point was they could've still got him as a free agent if they'd offered him more money - we would not have matched (or been able to)

We scratched each others back and thats why a trade got done at all!

The whole thing was a pre-agreed deal to help both parties get more value.
Geelong saved money, we got a lot more from him leaving than we would've from the compensation and took Geelong's picks.

I'm interested to see what you do for a job. If its something complex I really worry for your workplace.

Elite Crow put yourself in Geelongs shoes.

You're wanting to sign danger on less money.
You approach Adelaide
Geelong: "if we do a trade, we can sign Danger on less money"
Adelaide: "sure as long as you give us substantially more than our FA compensation"
Geelong: "Hows two picks instead of 1 and a steak knives player"
Adelaide: "nah thats a crap deal - no way. Danger is worth way more than that"
Geelong "OK free agency it is, cya"
Adelaide: Walk away with FA compensation only while allowing Geelong to retain their first and second round picks.

Next Day: "Elite Crow sacked as AFC list manager"

We get 1 pick and nothing more. Geelong pay more money for their player.
We are still worse off. We have no danger and 1 less draft pick.

Who says we could not have matched if they increased their offer?
You also forget Geelongs pay structure where they don’t hand out huge contracts especially more than the captains.

You missed the last line:
Adelaide: no worries, we will match and you will have to trade for him anyway or he goes in the PSD.

At that point it’s the exactly same situation as Kelly.

But then they pay him more and we cant afford to match.
Thats the point. Thats the only reason Geelong wanted to trade for him at all, so they could save money.
They'd just fork out the extra $200k a year and keep their picks, then we cant match and get compo.

This is why it was a win-win.
We were always going to lose Danger, but we got more than the FA compensation.
We then wasted the 20s pick on Menzel which was a far far worse play than the Danger trade.

Again who says we couldn’t afford to match? Provide one quote that we couldn’t.

Now that you can’t do that, your whole argument falls flat

Have you seen anyone ever match any RFA requests?

Ever?
Why might that be?

We couldnt afford, but regardless if they'd offered more money and we match, then the PSD draft does actually become a threat for someone who has already said he's leaving and the club hold to ransom.

Do you know what happened with Cam McCarthy?
We'd be paying $1m for Danger to sit on the beach in Geelong with no draft picks.

Great result.

So you don't know we couldn't afford to match. Thanks for confirming it, makes the rest of your huff and puff full of hot air.

It doesnt change anything.

We did a deal that was mutually beneficial for a player that was leaving no matter what.

It means everything, because that's your basis as to why we couldn't treat it like a normal trade.

And I agree, the thread ends here with all to see that despite you acting like an arrogant dufus and calling fellow posters idiots, you have absolutely nothing to back your opinion up. Just remember this next time you carry on.

Exactly. We planned all along ensuring we had enough cap to match whatever bid Danger would get so we could get the best deal possible for him. Geelong on the other hand had to squeeze what they had to fit him in which is why they went down the trade path and giving us a couple of picks instead of simply outbidding us and keeping their draft picks.

So if they can't outbid us and we match -

An offer to a Restricted Free Agent may be matched by his Club. Should his original Club match the offer, and the Restricted Free Agent Player does not wish to remain with his original Club, he must enter the National Draft or seek a trade.

Thus making it no different to any other uncontracted player.

Oh well, this idiot enjoyed this same conversation in 2017, keep fighting the good fight.

Personally I am bewildered that this conversation went for so long. I just couldn't be bothered to continue debating this with DS
