Or after you have tried to get every drop out of an older playing list and draw the line that the list no longer gives you a shot at a flag
There are no pre-emptive rebuilds

Will be interesting to see what the Cats now do, I’d argue they’re in a similar spot to what we were in 2018/19 (except they actually won a flag beforehand)

We absolutely could have topped up and tried to go again.

It wouldn't have worked, but we certainly could have done it.
No we couldn't, we were woeful. There was nothing to top up

We couldn't after being Birdbrained...

The playing group were completely fractured from the coaches.

Sure.

But it's not like we couldn't have buried our head in the sand and topped up.

We made a decision to not do that and not to re-sign a bunch of players, like Greenwood, Jacobs and Keath.

Plenty of clubs should have cut deeper and properly done a rebuild, and haven't.

We did bury our head in the sand for a while & only made things worse!

There was no coming back after that camp.

Topping up would have been useless.

It didn’t appear a sustainable culture. Compare Pyke and Birdbrain to Nicks and Jackson for culture (Chalk/cheese).

I agree the humiliation / choke of 2017 GF, then the camp should have seen us hit the reset button but probably only one year earlier 2019 starting the rebuild.

glad we went the full rebuild, the only one in 30 years history which is amazing in itself. Topping up wouldn’t have worked and has ceilings (teams scraping into prelims but being no where near a flag threat then hopeless for the next 6-7 years).

I can almost guarantee we are going to need to do another major rebuild again in the next 30 years.

No, we couldn't. There is no coming back from a 2-10 run and one where the players have downed tools to try to get a coach sacked. Can't keep the core because they'll down tools when it gets tough. Can't keep the admin/coaches because they pushed the players to that point.

We could have tried to go again, but by that point, the only way out is to burn it all down and start over.

Exactly.

We could have, in the way that anyone could make a catastrophic mistake if they wanted to

We couldn't have gone again and had it succeed

Yep, I agree and clearly they did too.

My point was just that they COULD have tried to go again and many clubs have decided not to rebuild when they obviously needed to. But luckily common sense meant they decided to rip the band aid off.

The SA lad definitely sounds like an electrical appliance

Agree … the only way we could reloaded and gone again would have been if we had of retained Danger , Charlie and one or 2 others

We lost too many players to do it and also the culture was shot post camp debacle and having Burton etc on staff

Even if we had them, if 2019 pans out the same way, your only recourse is to burn it all down. The state of the list really doesn't matter at all when you have a team who chose to down tools to get a coach/admin group sacked.

It might just mean it's one or two years at the bottom, not four-five which we're currently at.

Keep ya eye on a cuppla Stingers Harvey Langford and Cooper Hynes in that bigger midfield category. Not to mention Sam Lalor of course ;)
Hypothetical. If we could trade for M Phillipou at the end of the year OR trade up to secure one of these young top end mids in this years draft, what would be your preference based on what you have seen?

Sid Draper it appears isn't an athletic beast if he tested in all aspects of the testing day. Wonder if Hugh Payze is former Crows Andrew Payze's son?

Did Welsh test? Wasn't he right up there in the 20m sprint at last year's testing?
