Did Carlton made the right decision choosing Voss over Ross?

It is quite amazing that many of the comments being made about Carlton in this thread, by both Carlton supporters and neutrals alike, are EXACTLY what I was saying during the off-season (and being accused of trolling for doing so).

Interesting. Very interesting indeed...
You are an oracle of truth. You deserve an honorary position in every thread about Carlton. With all your posts pinned to the top of each page. 👍

You don't see us improving when King returns when he is arguably the best young key forward in the game? Strange take.

The likes of Billings, Jones, Coffield, Hayes and McKenzie could all improve us too although not as significantly as King will.

Nope I don't.
I think teams work you out by that stage.
King's a promising player but he's returning from a fairly significant injury and will probably need a full preseason to recapture his 2022 form.

Why do you think he’s been out for so long? He’s doing his “full preseason” now. Like the others who are out injured. They’re not letting them play until they’re fit af.

He was back in part training prior to the season starting, so his shoulder is presumably well-and-truly recovered by now. Would have been playing by now had he not done the hammy the week before R1.

Yeh your right!
Slender built athlete to begin with and will hit the ground running. Won't miss a beat on return :drunk:

I don't know whether Voss was the right decision but surely with their list its finals or bust especially after they completely threw away a golden opportunity last year.

We've been hearing how Carlton are coming for years now. They have a very mature and experienced list with their most talented players in their absolute primes. They've basically maxed out their salary cap by trading in many players. If not now - when?

That should be the expectation and I think they are capable of meeting it.

Carltons best 22 on paper is as good as any in the league. Look at freo, they're struggling for one key forward, Carlton have two and are travelling slightly better than them.

Their spine is fantastic, they've got an incredibly good midfield including the reigning brownlow medallist.

Nope, the best 22's in the league have much better bottom half than what Carlton have

They need a better spread around the ground before you can claim their 22 is as good as any in the league

Their top 6 players are probably as good as any other clubs top 6, but that is very different

Yes, Ross didn't want to go through the application process. It would be pretty negligent for an organisation to hire an individual who thinks they are above the club's processes.
Everyone knows Lyons game plan and everyone knows how he coaches you are not going to find out anything during a interview process that you didn’t already know about him!

I think they did.
Ross has a terrible style which really discourages people from enjoying the game. Defensive minded, slow monotonous approach. And while he gets teams into contention, it's the same old story against teams who can both defend well and score 100 points from week to week.
His teams made three grand finals which were extremely close in 09 and 10 St Kilda averaged 100 points a game during there seasons it’s a massive misconception that his solely a defensive coach even this season his game plan is actually a lot more attacking

Outside of 2015 SOS’s use of first round draft picks has been very poor.
Your mob is not as good as you think is all.
Again, last year, same scenario and look how it panned out.
Not to mention, Ross' game plan is very taxing. You should really know all this already (Saints 08-11).
Made two grand finals in that time pushed the greatest Geelong team ever to the absolute limit and drew a grand final im not sure why you would hi light those specific years as a failure on lyons game plan

I get it and have copped my whacks.

I do rate Carlton as a mid table side. I think folks are blinded by the top end talent. The reality is that talent runs out quickly and their bottom 10 on match day are simply C graders who would not get games at most other Clubs.

IMO Voss and co are doing a fine job with what they have.

Think about it this way - Russell Crowe doesn't audition for roles. They come to him and say "Russ we want you for this role"

When someone has a proven track record making them go through the whole dog and pony show is actually an insult. Sayers had the right approach - until his board got worried someone like Ross would take away all their power.
It's important that a coach believes in the playing list, supports the club vision, and wants to work with the board.

Take a look at Malcolm Blights time at St Kilda to see how the process can go pear shaped when usual process is bypassed. The St Kilda president of the time admitted he partied hard on coke and alcohol during his Presidency.

This just cannot continue to be trotted out. They lined up yesterday with
Pittonet
Kennedy
Silvagni
Ed Curnow
Fisher
O’Brien
Durdin
McGovern

Their VFL depth is led by the likes of Dow, Fogarty, Plowman who have been not good enough for years.

Gov and Kennedy are fine, the rest you are correct about. Add Honey to that list as well.

We have no good half forwards and the small forwards are either too young/not good enough on a consistent basis. Hollands and Cowan are going ok but shouldn’t be walk up starts and we still don’t have a good ruckman.

Losing all our running half backs kill us as we compliment the slowness around the ground with the run generated by Saad, Doc and Williams.

We have too many permanently injured players on our list as well.
