Did Sydney cheat?

Depends who called for the stretcher.

If the umpire did it on his own then no.

If the Sydney trainer called for a stretcher then yes.

My money is on the later considering Sydney have history exploiting loopholes in poor spirit for a long time now.

Leppitsch was perfectly fine questioning the rule Sinclair was in no harm at all being 150m away but he overstepped the mark when he suggested he fell over his own feet! or "cramped up" i imagine he would be embarrassed after watching what actually happened and perhaps should choose his words more wisely in the future.

Either way, umpires decide when play stops. Nothing to do with Sydney.

One of the best I've seen. Had me pissing myself the more I watched. Bravo!

OK then!

We've sorted it out.

a) Leppa looking for an excuse. Doesn't want to see that one of his players illegally blindsides Sinclair, where a free kick for in the back, amongst other things, should have been paid to Sinclair where a goal would have been kicked to put us further in front.

b) Split second decision made by Swans legitimately thinking a bloke has done his knee (going by vision of Sinclair rolling in pain) so they once again use a LEGITIMATE AFL rule in order not to be a man down for an EXTENDED period & call for the stretcher.

c) Huge assumption being made that that the Lions would win that contest when play was stopped & that the ball wouldn't have gone OOB where Swans players could have all gone back to regroup.

d) Most importantly, it's a fantastic feeling knowing full well that I follow a team whose coaching staff know the rules of the game more so then their opposition who should be questioned for questioning the rules when this particular rule has been in operation for some 20 years now!

Now suddenly we have another LOOPHOLE 'ingeniously' discovered by the Swans!

Seriously.............just f . . k off!

Rude letter to follow!

What's all this crap about Gardiner illegally taking out Sinclair. Are you lot serious? He laid a shepherd to allow his own teammate to win clean possession of the ball. The same kind of shepherd would have happened a dozen times in the game maybe more. Sinclair got up and chased and then collapsed. He didn't flatten him from behind pls. Swans fans have done a great job of taking the stretcher issue and moving the goal posts to Christensen being a diver and Gardiner a cheap shot merchant.

Swans fans want to call out Leppa for raising the issue but of course an ex Swans player in Kennelly is allowed to say its sour grapes by the Lions. He wouldn't be biased now would he :)

I watched this, at face value the game shouldn't be stopped for a conscious non concussed player 150m from the play. Generally you only see the umpires stop play if a player is at risk of being in harms way and completely unable to protect themselves. If this had been the call on a wing you might not care, but when the player injured is as far as physically possible from the ball when they cease play... well I think that either the rules or umpire direction needs tweaking.

I totally agree....and yet the thread title says "Did Sydney cheat?"

What happened here was ridiculous and Leppa had every right to blow up the way he did. Horse would've done the same thing had it happened to the swans.
Nice try but no.
Horse prefers the straight bat approach to pretty much everything.

Not that it matters.
Justin likes to blow up in pressers. Scott seems himself as the enforcer. Clarkson enjoys rubbing shoulders with Adelaide fans. It's all part of the theatre.

Gardiner started out with a shepherd to the side but gets into his back. I don't think there was any malice in it but it was just a bit clumsy...not as clumsy as Sinclair falling over trying to take an uncontested mark right in front of goal...but clumsy nonetheless.

ah mm Umpires must stop when a stretcher comes on - thus the Swans cause the stoppage.
According to the AFL umpires spokesman this morning, it's up to the umpires to decide when to stop play. This is normally done when the ball is considered dead - which it wasn't at this time. It was the wrong call and they've admitted their mistake. The rest of this thread should be in Bay 13.

I don't think anyone seriously thinks it was anything other than a good shepherd. If they do, they're kidding themselves.

Leppa's blow up was pretty funny, but disappointing he chose to focus on an umpiring mistake rather than praise the Lions for dominating most of the game.

This is what I thought at the time. Pretty ridiculous to accuse Sydney of any underhanded tactics in that situation but the call from the umpires was poor and made it all look a bit strange.

Sydney fans shouldn't be so defensive. Im 100% sure that if the circumstances were reversed there would be just as much outrage from Swans fans. Play was stopped when it shouldn't have been, giving Sydney an advantage when they were less than a goal up and probably had momentum against them and with the ball in the opposition forwardline. Any team's supporters would be a little pissed in those circumstances.

In all seriousness thank you for a level-headed and reasonable comment.

Uh....we're defensive because people are accusing us of cheating and saying we have a long history of doing so. I think that constitutes fairly solid ground for being defensive.

I think what gets missed in all this is how much Darcy Gardiner is a cheap shot coward but other than that "we was robbed" poor Leppa almost Scott brother worthy.
Probably because it was within 5 meters of the ball and therefore you're the only one wanting to make a big deal out of it and deflect the real issue issue of the umpires again making an incorrect decision to favour Sydney.

Teflon Swans.

Sure but acting like there's no merit in the reaction by Brisbane fans/Leppitsch is pretty silly all the same. Swans fans would be equally livid in the circumstances.

I 100% agree.
Brisbane played far better and deserved to win.

Justin has every right to say what he wants but does he really want his players acting that way? Rockliff was almost in tears at the end. Seems a strange example for a coach.

At the end of this the rule needs to be fixed. There is currently nothing stopping a team throwing a stretcher on as soon as they realise they are going to concede a goal over the back which is just stupid.

The umpires should be the only ones authorised to call for the stretcher. And there are about 10 of them including the peace keeping one about 5 metres from each bench so there are plenty of opportunities for the teams to communicate with the umpires and have a fair and reasonable decision made.
