Did You Know...?

You know you're traveling badly when Melbourne supporters start questioning your place in the competition! Its Borough, not Boroughs, btw.

Hehe, didn't even notice you were a saints supporter. Sorry for taking it off topic! Still think port Melbourne are rad. Carry on!

St Kilda were not admitted to the VFL due to their superior ground, as many believe, but because of the location of that ground. The VFL wanted a north/south balance, and the Saints fit the bill. Port Melbourne was initially favored to be invited, but rough crowd behavior was a main issue that ruled them out.

Yeah bit of a sliding doors moment.

I think there's a similar one with Prahran - the VFL wanted 3 VFA clubs in 1925 for their 12 team comp. It eventually came down to Hawthorn, North Melbourne, Prahran and Footscray.

I think the final selection was pretty close and made on relatively minor considerations. Today North, Hawthorn and Footscray remain as AFL clubs in the national competition. Prahran has been through a merger or two and is currently in the VAFA.

Been a while since I read it, that's how I remember it.

Basically, Footscray were in as the reigning VFA premier and had beaten reigning VFL premier Essendon in a charity match. Hawthorn were invited, despite not being the biggest or most succesful club, for (supposedly) political reasons. Prahran were also invited, but North (who had been trying since 1903 to gain admission into the VFL) wrote an 11th hour, impassioned letter to VFL HQ, and they replaced Prahran at the last minute. I believe North were on their last warning with the VFA and would have been permanently kicked out if they had failed.

Given the Two Blues were forced out of the VFA with financial problems and now play Ammos, I have always wondered how different the AFL would have looked with Prahran instead of the Kangaroos.

1980..... The Home and Away Season Ladder after the 22 Rounds.

The Cats finished top of the ladder - with a For/Against of 2362/1888
The Roys finished last on the ladder - with a For/Against of 2398/2788

I think it is the only time in history that the bottom team has scored more than the top team over a season. Crazy stat.

Richmond was the first team ever to finish 9th in VFA history as they finished 9th of 10 teams in 1885

Richmond hold the AFL record for most 9th placed finishes (6), this is double the next most which is a tie between Hawthorn and St Kilda on 3.

I'd assume that Richmond doesn't hold the VFA and VFL records for most 9th placed finished, otherwise you would have told us? So who does?

Speaking of 9th.

North Melbourne are the first and only team in the AFL era to finish 9th in two consecutive years (2011/11)

Richmond must really time their run at 9th well

Des Headland has joined luminaries such as Glenn Lazarus and Dougie Hawkins in running for a seat in WA on behalf Clive Palmer and his merry band of whack jobs.

Just the men to take this country forward.

Vanders is like the Anti-Christ when comes to star players acting like professionals.

The best one is when he was young and Sheedy had just started out as coach and wanted to meet individual players and get to know them.

Vander arrived at the coaches home for his interview/chat/meeting with half a dozen tallies under his arm...
This was what the well mannered man did in those days though.
Arriving "empty handed", sans a beer was social suicide, even if the host did not drink.
The truly socially graceful would have also had a bottle of Black Tower, Ben Ean or Blue Nun for Mrs Host to boot.

Not as amazing, but reminds me of Josh Carr, 10-0 wins against the Crows.

That's more amazing, because Guerra's career has sen him always playing for good to dominant teams.

Poor Carr had to play for the bunch of purple pansies.

On the all time VFL-AFL win/loss record table, Richmond currently sit 9th with a winning percentage of 50.68.

GWS and Gold Coast still currently sit below University.

Did you know Richard Tambling was drafted ahead of Lance Franklin

In the 1940s after a series of meeting between the parties, the VFL made an offer to the VFA for a part merger and a system of promotion and relegation.

Under the system, the two grand finalists from the VFA would have played off against the bottom two VFL clubs. If successful, they would be promoted to the VFL the following season, and the VFL clubs relegated.

This was rejected by the VFA who demanded a full merger into a combined two division league with automatic promotion / relegation. The decision has been called the first step in the death of the VFA.

Some of you guys may already know it, but a pretty crazy stat:

Geelong's score in the 2007 Grand Final was 24.19.163. 24 was the number of Mark Blake, who was controversially dropped for Steven King to play in the big game, and 19 was Matt Egan's number, who broke the navicular bone in his foot in Round 22 of that season and never played another game (and obviously missed the Grand Final). 163 was the year Geelong last won a premiership before beating Port Adelaide. The Power's score of 6.8.44 was also eerie, with 44 being the number of years between drinks for the Cats.

Brett Montgomery played finals in every completed season he played (retired early in his last year after getting injured).

Ron Barassi coached the dancers for the football sequence in Robert Helpmann's The Display

starts at 7:25

Barassi is recorded as saying: "In 1964 I had the great pleasure of coming to know Robert Helpmann through my involvement on his ballet ‘The Display’. In the dance there was quite a lot of football played and Robert asked me to attend rehearsals and advise the ballet dancers on the correct ways of playing Victorian Rules. I did so and although the dancers were impressively athletic, I immediately noticed that they were throwing the football around the room like rugby players. I told Robert this and he was absolutely mortified. From there he worked solidly to get every detail right, as his demand for excellence and accuracy was uncompromising."
