Tom Wills (Founder of AFL) was involved in an massacre by Aboriginals in Queensland. His father was leading a party to help set up grazing holdings etc. They were ambushed and most of the party were killed. Tom Wills was 26 at the time and was on of 6 (out of 25) who survived.

He later went on to coach the first Aboriginal cricket team.

A more interesting life hasn't been lived, Australian or otherwise. And no one I know has heard of him, even footy fans

Things more recent than the last time Richmond & Melbourne were in the same finals series together;

-The attack on Pearl Harbour
-John Curtin becomes Prime Minister
-Citizen Kane loses the Oscar
-Dumbo is released
-1st US ship to sink in WWII
-The birth of Simon & Garfunkel, Sir Alex Ferguson, Anne Rice

Just love this rivalry!

Fred Fanning kicked the record 18 goals in a match in his last game of VFL football.

Even funnier is that he left to play for Hamilton Football club in the Western Wimmera Football League as they tripled his salary
Hawthorn and Richmond have never played in a final against one another
That's crazy

What's the point of voting if Sheeds can do what he wants?
It would be fair to say he made the right call in keeping him though, turned out to be a solid player

Robert Walls was telling a story the other weekend that the match committee initially didn't have Rhys-Jones in the side for the '87 grand final. Walls wanted him in but was outnumbered.

Didn't he win the Norm Smith medal?

Sydney last year becomes the first team since Melbourne in 1960, to have lost three of their last four home and away matches and go on to win the Grand Final. The difference is Melbourne that year had secured top spot before losing its last three games coming into finals. Sydney on the other hand still had a minor premiership and home finals up for grabs. The only other time this had occurred was back in 1916 but due to WWI, Fitzroy lost nine in a row and secured the wooden spoon before playing the first final because only four teams competed in that year.

So the 2012 premiership is the only time in 116 years a team has carried such form and went on to win the Grand Final if you don't count the Fitzroy anomaly. Sydney also were the first team since Hawthorn in 1976 to have lost their last two games coming into finals and win the flag - this also has only happened three other times.

Didn't he win the Norm Smith medal?
Yep. According to Walls' yarn, someone (pres of match commitee?) was asking Walls how he felt about their chances the day after the side was picked, and he just wasn't comfortable with having someone to play on Brereton. He wanted Rhys, and they said "well if it means that much to you, he can play... but it's your call". Walls then felt the pressure that the move didn't work out, it'd be on his head.

In 1963, Geelong and Melbourne went on an overseas promotional exercise and played games in Honolulu and San Francisco. The game in Honolulu was played at an airbase on a field made up by joining together a baseball ground and an American Football ground. The game in San Francisco was played in an open park, and somehow, the ground wound up being nearly 300 yards long.
In true 'Australian Rules Exhibition' fashion, the game descended into a bit of a biff and there was plenty of aggro around.

Legend has it -that Western Australia were playing in a state of origin match (dont know against who ) and were coached by notorious hot head John Todd (ex Eagles coach)

At half time WA are being soundly thrashed -so Todd decides to give the team an allmighty spray -he goes up to Gary Buckenara ( who started the game on the interchange bench) -hey Bucky you are pathetic Bucky-you are hopeless Bucky -you havent touched the ball Bucky . Gary Buckenaras reply -I havent been on the ground yet -you feucken imbecille

True story -Buckenara was on the bench for the entire 1st half
