Do Carlton need to undertake a list rebuild?

They just can't afford to be too aggressive at the trade table given they already have all the key pieces in place, so investment should be made in speculative kids to plan for the medium to long term.
They actually managed to do both, by getting back into the draft, and bringing in depth

Maybe a tough ‘26, but placed well from ‘27 onwards

Everyone said Richmond needed to rebuild after 2016 so there is hope. A more recent example is Collingwood in 2021 who apparently had the worst list in the AFL and were going to be screwed for years, look how that turned out.

Yes, they are good examples and blues do indeed have the core of a team that is genuinely finals worthy

This club off season reset could be a pivotal moment

Carlton played finals in 2023 and 2024 so yes finals worthy. Cripps, Weitering, McKay and Walsh is a solid core to build around you just have to hope Carlton are making the right tweaks.

They had an even better core to build around over the last few seasons with Curnow and TDK, and peaked with a 13 win home and away season.

They are nowhere near it.

Their list is more balanced with recent small/medium forward additions. The previous forward 50 setup was Curnow/McKay or bust as they were surrounded by scrubs like Durdin, Fantasia, White and Motlop. It didn't help that Curnow often refused to chase and tackle once the ball was going the other way.

There's that word again.... 'balanced'.

The word that is used when you lose 2 of your best 6 players.

Depending on context.

Yes, blues did lose some A grade talent, however replaced it with players that should blend in well and give other players more opportunity

this is the rebalancing piece, evening out the list profile

Similar to Richmond under Hardwick who made tweaks to the forward 50 system after losing Vickery and Griffiths it was said they'd struggle with Riewoldt and a mosquito fleet but they made it work. There is hope for Carlton if their A graders get back to their best after all having down years in 2025 and the new recruits help to revitalise a team that was looking stale so far it looks like the right moves have been made on/off field, the side needs to improve consistency as well it must be frustrating for the supporters seeing their side beat top 4 Geelong and lose to bottom 4 Richmond in the same season.

Carlton are rebuilding, letting TDK go was a clear choice and in the end the right one.

Wright is a very clear eyed bloke. Does not care whose toes he treads on, gets the job done, if he doesn't get what he thinks is right he walks. Walked from Hawthorn when Clarckson stayed a year too long, walked from us apparently over Kelly's appointment (or maybe about the decision to keep old players? who knows).

He's still at Carlton so they are still following his plan. Expect some fruit, not necessarily straight away.

So Brian Cook wasn't able to make it happen at Carlton?

I thought he was going to be the Messiah?
Cook was hired to lay the groundwork for his successor and when he arrived he said Carlton's rebuild has a long way to go. Not too dissimilar to Paul Roos at Melbourne and we saw Melbourne win a flag under Roos successor.

When Cook was hired, Carlton had as good as top 6 as anyone team in the competition.

They just had to find the peripheral players and implement a gameplan to contend for premierships, as many people expected them to be doing so right now.

Carlton are further away from contending for premierships now than they were when he arrived, in no small part due to some of their best players choosing to leave the club to play elsewhere.

Cook was hired not long after Carlton had sacked Teague they weren't exactly in a good spot. It's ironic how Carlton hired Teague over Voss in 2019 only to sack Teague and replace him with Voss in 2021.

So Cook was like your John the Baptist and Wright is the true saviour? Peace be with you.
Remember when Paul Roos was the messiah at Melbourne? It's common knowledge that he laid the groundwork for Simon Goodwin and Carlton had a similar succession plan in place for Brian Cook to lay the groundwork for Graham Wright before handing the reigns over to him.

That core needed to change, it was too predictable and needed smoothing out around the ground.

24 fall away and 25 bomb proved changes needed to be done, blues have made a statement during the off season

We’ll see a much more workman like Carlton this coming season

Sadly, I agree with you. I think Carlton are doing the right things list wise.

It was great playing against both Curnow and McKay because you knew they were going to be the target majority of the time and the small forwards weren't good enough to crumb it. Even when TDK moved forward, the opposition wouldn't be concerned because he wasn't going to mark it anyway. At least now you can begin to be a bit unpredictable inside 50.

Voss probably has to go. I would put a lot of blame on him. Coaching for his life in 2026.
