Richmond will have another ordinary year and they will want Sheeds to replace Frawley.

Sign the great man to a long term deal!

I'd say yes. But gee whiz Harv's would be a bit dark.

I reckon Kev does it Parkin/Brittain style where in his final two years he starts to hand over the reigns gragually to Harvs on match day, training and media wise.
By the time Kev's contract runs out Mark's not only got the coaching nouse but he'll be used to the pressures surrounding the top job.

YES!!

it will seem weird for me because sheedy is the only 1 that has coached essendon since i barracked for them and even before i was born so i cant imagine wat it would be like without him. his 56 i say he should retire at 60.

but if he didnt sign would harvey coach?

Good question.

I think that he will, but, he really shouldn't.

Why? Because he hasn't spent time away from the club, to gain experience of what other clubs do and also because hwe knows the current players too well.

Look at the success of coaches who make it these days. Most have had some experience at other clubs, including coaching reserves teams, to build up a track record of performance.

That is why, when the time comes, we look at other ex-Bomber players initially, to be the future Essendon coach.

Here are some names:

Terry Daniher
Neale Daniher
Mark Thompson
Gary O'Donnell

sheeds has been a great coach for the bombers for nearly a quarter of a century...its a tough one for bombers.....i think essendon may need the change though...ultimatly it should be up to sheeds,he has earnt the right to say if wants to go or stay and his decision either way should be respected..it will be bizarre when he finally does call it a day and is no longer coaching them..if he leaves, you do get the feeling he'll end up at richmond...

I think we should wait till the end of the season and see how we go. I would love Harvs so coach Essendon one day though. I think he has the making to be a very successful coach.

No way! I say let him leave and take Harvs as our next coach. This way the club can finally fall out of the 8 without even trying!

If we do the Parkin/Brittain thing then you can kiss a few yrs down the gurgler IMO. It will be as bad as Carlton (without the salary cap crap I hope!).

I say we sign Sheeds until he says he has had enough then we get an outsider to coach. You could throw GO'D in this mix but after this yr he will be coach somewhere else. DO NOT PASS THE BATON as it will not work IMO.

I politefully disagree, but totally respect your opinion.

What you must realise is that Carlton had a crap list at the time they decided to change reigns, whilst Essendon does not. However their coach chosen was widely regarded as having a great coaching brain and still is. Much like Harvs.

Plus the club's in a great financial position, Carlton was not, so I think we can safely assume that the salary cap will not be a huge issue for us.

To say that it'll be a bad thing based on one fairly loose example is a little silly.

I'm not a fan of the Richmond policy of choosing their "own" as coaches. I love Harvs but I think he needs time at another club, maybe coaching VFL first or something. I get narky when I read in the paper that 'he's ready' when actually he is largely untried.

Who we bring in....good question.....not sure.

Very nicely stated sir! However the fact you then went on to tear my argument apart means you did not truly respect my opinion but rather thought it quite silly. I have no problem with this in general as my opinion was rather crudely put forth.

My grave concern regarding Harvs is he is a complete unknown in true coaching terms. This on it's own does not mean much as many a great coach have started as unknowns. A classic example is Sheeds himself. However, included in the unknown factor is the Essendon faithful's blinkered opinion of one of our favoured sons.

A few modern clubs have shown that appointing a favoured son to such an important position can have VERY problematic consequences.

After having one coach for such a long and distinguished period of time it may well be better to bring in someone who has not spent their whole career under one coaching style and regime. A fresh and unblinkered approach maybe a better option. Someone who can have an unbiaised look at our playing list and clear out any "dead wood" while promoting some that the current coaching panel have overlooked for whatever reason.

Did they fail because they were favorite sons of the club, or because they took on the role with no prior coaching experience (ie. Bartlett, Shaw, Quinlan, etc)? I suspect the latter.

with essendon and sheedy its almost getting to the point where maybe essendon doesnt have any say if they give sheedy the flick.

sheedy will die as coach of essendon.

re-sign, definitely. Sometimes I don’t understand the decisions he makes, but I generally have faith in his abilities as a coach!

agree totally. I was sorry but glad that TD left to get experience elsewhere (although I'm still not sure if he'll make it as a senior coach) and though I don't like the idea of Harvs going elsewhere, I think it has to happen.

and who to bring in when the time finally arrives that Sheeds bids us adieu? I'd like to see GO'D.
