Does your interest in the AFL wane when the WC is on?

Lets face it. World cup is a huge like the olympics that only come around every 4 years.

I dont watch epl but the world cup results is the big world stage with big million dollar players that cant really compare to afl as much as i love it.

Nah, I love this time every 4 years. I get to watch the Pies (and makes it that much better that we're playing well this year) and support the Aussies and Croatians in the World Cup. It's a feast of football as the great Les Murray used to say!

Which highlights my point perfectly. The fact that merely being physical and close makes it one of the games of the year is an indictment on how far this sport has fallen.

It was still a low skilled affair on both sides with few redeeming moments.
It’s actually sad that this was a contest between two top 4 aspirants and is regarded as one of the games of the year. It was crap footy, no flow, low skills and a dour affair.
Perfectly sumed up in this article.

"Geelong deserve credit for being the best defensive team in the league but the spectacle they provide with their stoppage-based, kick-down-the-line footy and unwillingness to take the game on lest they should expose their defence is painful to watch.

The Tigers showed why Geelong have only won three finals from 11 in the last six years – because in high-intensity games, you simply don’t have the luxury of slow ball-movement. The pace of the game is forced upon you and if you’re not used to high-intensity footy, you can’t be expected to really compete when the whips are cracking.

Richmond should be commended for saving the state of the game on the weekend, shining briliantly with their attacking footy on a sodden, dreary day."

Soccer is a soft, slow, pathetic sport, unfortunately footy is heading that way as well.
I’ve seen more physicality in local lawn bowls than the WC.

Makes post bagging out soccer, has Manchester City listed as other team :drunk::drunk::drunk::drunk:

If big automatically meant better you'd have a point.

When its written by an author who purports to be "a Geelong supporter watching with sadness from abroad as the GFC is shredded by the joint ego's of Chris Scott and Brian Cook.". you wonder if there is an underlying agenda for this article and the last 10 about Geelong.

West Coast has always been shit name for a football club.
But no, my interest not eroded by expansion club picking a shit name to go with.
36 players in one part of ground has though and rotations galore does.
Thankfully after this season it will be gone.

Your attempt at humor is humorous.

This bloke is a poorly researched, terrible writer, with a serious agenda.

Using him does more to discredit an argument than help it.

Yes, that all sounds like Geelong. Commiserations.
I have been a little surprised at how sour Richmond fans are about Geelong in the past two years. Is this because the Cats have beaten up on the Tigers for the past 35 years? 42 - 10 since 1983. Interesting. I actually don't mind the Tigers, but their fans are fast becoming more ignorant and repulsive than Hawthorn supporters...and that's saying something. I wonder if it's an abandonment issue?

I regard the WC as a pleasant diversion every four years. I quite enjoy all the fuss, shenanigans and hype that goes with it. Like seeing the teams, players, managers. Enjoy Martin Tyler. I watch a few games and rarely come across a compelling encounter though. So I just keep a reasonable eye on it, then move on. It doesn’t engage me emotionally like afl does, which, even when it’s having a ‘dull’ patch, still my preferred option, still the game I care about.
Ps this WC seems a bit flatter/ bit more lacklustre than previous ones for some reason. Needs a bit more Rene Higuita or something!

While i dont share your opinion - I think the world cup is the best sporting competition- i respect your views. I for instance tried out watching rugby league even going to the first ever state of origin held in melb in mid 90s. But league leaves me totally cold.

You either like a sport or you dont

Oh yeah I wasn't trying at all to be disrespectful. I have a mate who is so into it he has a speadsheet of all the games and times they are on, separated by hours he needs to be at work and sleeping.
I guess the main thing surprising me is that people would give up watching their side play to watch a world cup game. Maybe not including the Socceroos in that. But, I couldn't imagine feeling less invested in my footy side JUST because another big sporting event is taking place at the same time. Surely it's the old Mexican ad. 'Why can't we have both?"

I love soccer er football

But....

I’m not interested in a game that’s run by currupt officials and referees are corrupt also

No thanks

I’m the least bit interested in this World Cup

The very existence of this thread proves what a frivolous, vacuous bandwagoning, Theatre-going culture we have.

“I like this shiny new thing for the next 15 minutes and I’ve forgotten all about that old thing for the moment. I may go back to the old thing when the shiny thing is over.”

So no.

Why would your interest in one sport drop because another is on? Are people not capable of being interested in multiple things at a time?

My interest has dropped in terms of the bloating around the game i.e. the dozens of shows*. Will always check the scores and watch what I can of AFL whilst the World Cup is on.

*haven't exactly missed it.
