All these participants soccer boast about yet there moaning why a 39 year old wasn't being played, still relying on the same bloke to put the ball in the back of net as we did 12 years ago.
That's a development problem, not an enthusiasm problem. Sport in Australia would be better if we all picked our favourite and put time into it, but still supported the other codes.

Would happily take a world cup each year for 4 odd weeks at the expense of a whole footy season. Probably 2 seasons in fact. Look at the absolute shit that was dished up yet again on the round gone by. The scoring was terrible. Furthermore, look at all the die hard footy fans in this thread that agree the world cup and the world game is 10x better than football. I would have never picked that so many hardcore footy fans such as myself, ones you wouldn't guess are '' soccer '' lovers easily admit that you can't compare AFL to the world game/ The WorldCup. It doesn't matter what you think is better, all that matters is what is.

Soccer + The World Cup>>>>>>Footy. No contest.

will add, no need to be biased or not admit which is better and bigger. You may like footy more, but the world cup IS far greater than AFL.

It just isn't, sorry. Twenty two guys passing a sphere back and forth round a rectangle whilst all except two are not allowed to use their hands, for ninety minutes, with neither team scoring any goals except for one team that managed to score one. How can you even call that a decisive result? Statisticians would say it's too small a sample to be of any use.

I know there are billions of soccer fans worldwide and there's a reason for that, and Aussie Rules is never going to take off world-wide, it's too late, but I honestly believe if they'd grown up watching footy and not soccer, most of them wouldn't give soccer a second glance. There's just so much more to Aussie Rules.

Barely given footy a thought since the WC started, but now we have got the punt, I'll start giving footy more attention.

I had a weird feeling actually when Melbourne played Port, where I just wasn't anywhere near as enthused as normal as the game approached, but then admittedly, once it started, I was back in.

Well you’ve jumped the shark now

Not really. I’ve still been watching plenty of footy.

Just makes for a really fun time of year with footy on three or four days a week and then the World Cup on all seven days of the week.

Have loved the World Cup since I first watched the Aussies as a youngster back in 2006. Love watching the games early in the morning.

Will hopefully get to a World Cup in the future. Certainly wouldn’t care about missing a few footy games in the coldest part of the year.

Seeing footage from a few of my travelling mates of the fans in Russia and at other places around Europe while the games are on has been quite something. Like it or not, AFL never reaches the same level of drama.

Nobody grows up and chooses to get into Australian Rules because it’s this amazingly unique game. What a crock of shit. Kids grow up with it, and get used to it. It’s a sport that is ingrained in Australia’s short history. Soccer and other sports came later. But funnily enough, despite you thinking Aussie kids flock to it because of how unique it supposedly is, it’s not the case. Kids these days also flock to play basketball and soccer. And cricket obviously in the summer.

Footy fans like you make me laugh. Carrying on like footy is some sort of magical game. At the end of the day it involves a ball and two teams moving the ball around to score.

If you want to carry on about how shit another sport is, be my guest. I have much more fun enjoying following multiple sports and not caring about what’s better or more unique.

I’m not talking about the game people “choose to get into”. I’m not talking about the game kids “flock to”. I’m talking about the game people stick with because it’s so much better to watch.

Sometimes I wonder if people really realise what a unique thing this Aussie Rules is.

I’m not remotely a sports fan. I’m an Aussie Rules fan.

Couldn’t give a shit about other sports, frankly, though some of them amuse me.

If you want to carry on about how great another sport is, be my guest. I have much more fun enjoying one sport and not caring about what’s better or more unique because I know that for sheer spectacle out on the field, (not razzamatazz and “passionate” fans and kumbaya world party feel-good stuff), nothing beats the game we play here.

I’m perhaps quoting Gerard Whateley too often but I remember him saying at the beginning of last year that the real test for footy started from the beginning of last year as equalisation was kicking in and the two expansion teams weren’t getting freebies anymore etc.

Maybe the timing of the WC, weirdly enough, is a good thing. Good footy is awesome and we all want it - we are just not getting it as often

Gerard whately rarely makes a sound argument when you drill down in to it. Often superficially appealing I’m sure because of the verbose and self assured delivery but generally thin as a cheap pho

I would have thought the big test for footy was the first 5 years of establishing the expansion clubs

Whether it’s GW or not I agree with him. Clearly an equalised comp is a watered down comp. The advantage is it’s tighter - the disadvantage is that the quality of the top teams is lower and bad trends in the game become more apparent

Would never happen due to the $$$$ impact but i wonder whether a condensed season, where teams play each other just once would make it a superior competition

Whether it’s gw or not it is a nonsense

The idea that having a dominant team and an imbalanced league some how “masks” bad trends compared to a more balanced league is idiotic. It would appeal to nobody with decent critical thinking skills

I can enjoy both - even state of origin.

AFL is in the end just domestic sport though - the gap is massive compared to the WC or even the big euro soccer teams (I don't follow any of them but have a soft spot for Barcelona)

Did you actually watch any of the games? Even the highlights? I saw at least four incredible marks, a brilliant finish in the North-Dogs match, a massive upset and a terrifically tough contest between Port and Melbourne. Yep, there was some rubbish but there was some seriously great stuff as well.

BTW - I'm bemused that "the scoring was terrible" therefore soccer is a better sport. And I haven't seen a single quote from anyone saying "the world game is 10x better" (other than yourself).

I'm not going to rag on soccer (as I noted earlier I do enjoy watching the EPL highlights) but you'd want to have a better argument than that to back up your position.
