Small Midfielders

1. STEVEN ARMSTRONG (Perth) – Had an impressive camp producing fine results in the running vertical jump, 20m sprint, agility and shuttle run. Is likely to be taken as a 1st or 2nd Round Draft choice. A strong running midfielder for his size.

2. CAMPBELL BROWN (Oakleigh) – Son of legendary football figure Mal. Showed strong competitiveness at the camp and recorded good results in the 20m sprint. A strong tackler who can play in the midfield or down back.

3. ANDREW BROWNE (Claremont) – Determined small midfielder who showed great pace, clean hands and endurance during the skills session at Phillip. Has fine goal sense and is also a strong leader.

4. DANIEL ELSTONE (Bendigo Pioneers) – Elstone showed a strong work ethic at the camp and produced consistent results, particularly in the running vertical jump and shuttle run tests.

6. ADAM JONES (Subiaco) – Was hindered by osteitis pubis during the camp and was unable to run.

7. RICK LADSON (Bendigo Pioneers) – Is touted as a likely 1st or 2nd Round Draft choice, Ladson showed clean hands and a touch of class in the skills session. He produced excellent results in the shuttle run and also showed good agility. The tallest player of the small midfielders group.

8. LEIGH MONTAGNA (Northern Knights) – Was restricted at the camp due to a recent medial ligament strain on his right knee. Was unable to compete in running drills.

9. DAVID RODAN (Calder Cannons) – Arguably the stand out performer at the 2001 Draft Camp. Rodan, a back-to-back Morrish Medallist, blitzed in the Shuttle Run (beep test) and the 3km-time trial. Has an excellent character and did everything in his power to say ‘pick me’. Would be a tragedy if he missed out, as his only question mark is his height (170cm).

10. ASHLEY SAMPI (South Fremantle) – Rated by many as a definite Top 10 pick, Sampi should be selected in the Top 5-6. To watch Sampi’s skills in the wet was a delight, as he added great ball handling with a touch of class. Recorded a fine score of 2.92 in the 20m sprint test and has a fine character to match.

11. ADAM SCHNEIDER (NSW/ACT Rams) – Was unable to complete the running drills due to re-injuring his calf in the vertical jump test.

Medium Midfielders

12. LUKE BALL (Sandringham Dragons) – Is touted as the No.1 Draft pick. Has huge expectations placed on him, but has the character to handle the pressure. Is related to former Hawks’ John Kennedy and Peter Russo – both his uncle – and ironically is likely to be drafted by Hawthorn. The Hawks claimed the first pick in the Draft from Fremantle after giving up young gun Trent Croad, due to Ball being rated by many as the best young midfielder going around. Produced fine results in the 20m Sprint, 3km-time trial and shuttle run.

13. JAMES BARTEL (Geelong Falcons) – Was too young to be drafted last year after he was invited to the 2000 Draft Camp, but is likely to be hot property in 2001. Has been touted as a Top 15 Draft pick and showed glimpses of his talent in the skills session – where he is rated as a ball magnet.

14. ANDREW CARRAZZO (Oakleigh Chargers) – Had stress problems in his left shin and was unable to run.

16. RICHARD COLE (Pioneers/Eastern Ranges) – Originally from Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory, Cole shifted to Victoria where he played TAC Cup with the Eastern Ranges. Made his second appearance at the Draft Camp, after he attended, yet was too young to be selected in the 2000 National Draft. Was severely restricted at the camp with multiple injuries, but like Clarke, looms as a 1st Round Draft choice.

17. RYAN CROWLEY (Calder Cannons) – Had a viral infection and was restricted with some results, but still managed to record a solid result in the 3km-Time Trial.

One of the more quirky statistics saw Davies measure a handspan of 246. Along with David Rodan and Josh Dicketts – Davies won his group in both the 3km-time trial and shuttle run. His effort in the shuttle run was exceptional.

33. CHARLIE GARDINER (Sandringham Dragons) – Was an impressive performer in the standing vertical jump, where he recorded a score of 250cm in the combined group of medium forwards/defenders. Gardiner is a classy half-forward/midfielder.

34. LUKE HAWKINS (Old Scotch) – Was the oldest player to attend the 2001 Draft Camp at 23 years of age and was the only squad member to be born in the 1970s. 35. LUKE HODGE (Geelong Falcons) – Another young gun, certain to be in the Top 10, yet likely to be taken no later than pick five. Has been touted as a No.1 pick, but should be around the 3-4 mark. He missed most of the season with osteitis pubis, but still showed his class at the camp with a running vertical jump of 79, from the right foot. Was rated as arguably the most versatile player at the Draft Camp.

36. JOSH HOULIHAN (Murray Bushrangers) – Yet another Houlihan in the system! Similar size and type to his brothers – Ryan (Carlton) and Adam (Geelong). Josh produced an excellent run in the 3km-Time Trial.

A talented forward who shone in the TAC Cup Grand Final.

I was told that Collingwood are after this boy, has a lot to do why Collingwood was right behind the push to stop the 2 concessions going to Sydney

Should be good to see this boy in the red & white. They say he is the best player to have been produced out of NSW/ACT to date (includes mark mcveigh, nick davis etc)

All these are guns who I know will make good AFL players. I have seen in person, played on, or seen on tape or TV all these players, and they should be good AFL players.

The Hitman

David Hale's performance at the camp was astounding, for someone his size his vertical leap is amazing.

Apparently Geelong are keen on him, hopefully he's still around at pick 8. The word is that he is the most athletic and agile big man to be seen in the draft's history.

Cheers

The Cats are said to be pretty keen on Bartel and Davidson.

This guy really impressed me with his work ethic and skills for Vic Metro when I watched them play. I've heard he is a pretty good player - keep an eye out for him in the later rounds. Shame he was injured (like half the rookies seemed to be!!!)

Thought he was more of a defender??? Which other clubs besides Geelong interested in him, anyone know?

No, I was mostly looking at the guys who I had been told were good already (ie Ball, Power, Ablett Jr). Montagna was the only players I hadn't heard of who stood out.

I brushed past this fella today...go the kala fella! Ill tell ya how good he does at the interskool carnival tomorrow, he got champion boy earlier this year!

Keep an eye on David Rodan. I know the Cannons hierarchy would be very disappointed if he doesn't get drafted because of his height!!
At every level he has performed admirably. 2 Morrish medals, Victorian selection at U.16 and U.18, leading to All-Australian U.18 selection, finished off with a premiership medallion.
The boy can just play.
More than compenstaes for his height with speed, smarts, great evasive ability, good skills and super vision.
The Club that takes a punt will be well rewarded.

Sounds like Derek Murray........1997 Morrish medallist, games and goals record holder for the Murray Bushrangers......still has trouble getting a game at Port because of his height and build

From all accounts Rodan would be a good pick up except for his height. At 170cm the only player in the league smaller than him would be Libba. May be worth a punt late in the draft.

Now that Libba has indicated he will play one more year and the Dogs want him to continue Rodan at least may have a chance.

I like Richard Cole and as a smokey Josh Houlihan although there are 1 or 2 players who are young in this draft and may need an extra 2 years to develop. Certainly worth taking the chance.

After 2 consecutive Morrish Medals, it would be very hard to see no club wanting Rodan. Even if he is only 170cm there is more than enough talent to compensate.

Only saw him play once (TAC GF) and he was very good in that game, and showed touches of class about him.

I think he will get picked up but there will be 3 or 4 of his cannons mates infront of him.

I am hoping the Pies pick this guy up with their first draft pick at 11. From all reports he is an absolute gun, with prolific ball winning capabilities and excellent disposal. He stacks up well in terms of build and class to the more fancied Judd who will go top 5!

Either this guy, Sam Power or Jamar would be my preferences for pick 11!!!

This guy will be brilliant, hes still got another year in under 18s so he may not get picked up this year, but if hes still around he will be someone i'd definetaly pick up around the 60 mark.

If he doesnt get drafted, he will be in the top 20 next year for sure, possibly top 10.

To watch Sampi’s skills in the wet was a delight, as he added great ball handling with a touch of class. Recorded a fine score of 2.92 in the 20m sprint test and has a fine character to match.

please let us pick this kid up :(
