my perfect draft day.

#18 Watson or Darling
#34 Mitchell or Chalwell (depending on who we pick at 18)
#41 Karnezis
then later picks on mids and mature age players

I still want McCarthy.

McCarthy mightn't have Watson's leg, but he reminds me a bit of Harry Taylor with his frame, athleticism, marking and reach. Looks like he will fill out to be a good size like Austin who is now a unit, but a fraction shorter. We need to wait for McCarthy to reach Taylor's age in his debut year or thereabouts before we judge him. Watson might have a more immediate impact like Nathan Brown, but like Reid, McCarthy will take his time to fill out, develop and become the better footballer.

McCarthy looks like he could also rotate forward like Austin and Waite.

Nice versatility.

It's Tape and not McCarthy who reminds me of Bower.

I would prefer Darling ahead of Tape if we have to choose from these two.

We're probably wasting our time discussing McCarthy.

The GC will probably pounce on Lynch and McCarthy to top off their likely selections of Day and Gorringe.

Charmed life.

spot on TG, McCarthy should be taken in any of picks 9, 10, 11

Watson just seems to fit with our needs and then it's a case of whether he excels or gets shown up with bigger bodies...i trust our development staff ;)

hoping for a good slider though :thumbsu:

mature age at late pick whispers seem to suggest we'll go best available again

Zac Fitzgerald from SA seems a versatile tall, 192cm and 83ks.

The vision on the AFL site is impressive. Kicks three on some big guy wearing 33 playing for Vic Metro.

It would be funny if hughes just takes another mid after all of this :D
It would be funnier if we draft Darling and he plays midfield.

Jack's not every club's Darling
The questions frustrate Darling, who knows clubs worry about his height as a forward and was at pains during the recent draft combine to tell them it wasn't the only position he could play. If it were up to him, he'd be seen as a midfielder, a position his speed and endurance testing suggest he could play. ''You can go and get your own footy in there,'' he told The Age. ''You're not relying on other people to get you the footy, and I kind of rate my running ability. I think my game might suit playing there.''
Jack's not every club's Darling
One club's recruiters saw him drinking and scuffling with a bouncer after an under-18 game.

Every club has heard the off-field stories - and there are more of them - and some simply wouldn't draft him, at any pick. ''We couldn't keep up with his drinking,'' one recruiter said.

Brisbane Lions to snatch Richmond target Jared Polec

However, in a late change of heart, Brisbane is set to steal the Tigers' thunder by grabbing Polec at No. 5, instead of the man the Lions were strongly linked to, half-back Dyson Heppell.

And, rather than take Heppell in a straight swap, it is understood Richmond will pull its own surprise and grab nippy West Australian midfielder Reece Conca.

It is believed Gold Coast will let through either ruckman Daniel Gorringe or key forward Tom Lynch to the Dees at pick No. 12.

Instead of taking both key-position players, the Suns are sizing up midfielders Josh Caddy and Dion Prestia, and backman Seb Tape among picks seven, nine, 10 and 11.

Who gives a sh1t if he scuffled with a bouncer.
Bouncers are w***ers who need to be put in their place.

He had the guts to scuffle with them so he has a bit of courage in him.
Mind you the courage was probably courtesy of 29 beers and 16 jager bombs.

Sounds like we will fit in well on our booze cruise :D:thumbsu:

I do.

I am a bartender and have to put up with this sh1t all the time. Bouncers aren't universally bad people, they just have a tough job that will invariably make people unhappy. I have seen too many full of themselves Kings of the World get trashed and kicked out who end up having a crack at a bouncer or me. If Darling is one of the types who is happy to get a bit of drink in him and start something he can slide right on past 42 for all I care. ****heads only hurt the club in the end

18. CARLTON - Matthew Watson
Height: 195cm
Weight: 101kg
DOB: 16/07/92
Club: Calder Cannons (Vic)
Draft range: 15-30
The Blues have a glaring weakness in key defenders and Watson is the best-credentialled player in the draft to fill the breach. Unlike Michael Jamison, who struggles to get the ball, Watson is adept at winning the ball and kicking it 60 metres to position. He has a knack of beating the best opponents by nudging them out with his heavy frame.

Really like the sound of this bloke and he's a big unit, hope we get him!

Man City Blues only likes GHS because of his name.

He wouldn't have the slightest clue about what sort of player he is, let alone his strengths and weaknesses.

I know what I am talking about.
I would have taken Scott Pendlebury with pick 4 in 2005.

Well considering you would have taken Pendlebury at 4, you must know what you're talking about.

Well considering your knowledge, can you inform us less knowledgeable posters about what he will add to our team? I've just seen limited vision of the kid and just trying to decide why he is roughly the 18th ranked player in the draft.

Cheers JBLUES.

Not sure how earlier in the thread the makeup of the Freo and Sydney backlines became a benchmark to be aiming for to be honest.

Collingwood and St Kilda are the ones we should be looking at. They have great full ground defence, but they also have two of the taller backlines in the AFL.

Drafting Watson has it's risks and they will have to be very careful with him, because a kid that big with the work he needs to do has stress fractures written all over him. If we do draft him and handle him right I really do think that he can do a job for us.

18. CARLTON - Matthew Watson

23. GEELONG - Pat McCarthy

26. WEST COAST - Jack Darling (priority)

27. NORTH MELBOURNE - Lucas Cook

64. ESSENDON - Luke Mitchell

Paul Daffey's draft.
Seems that most are starting to pile the talls we've spoken about, further and further down the list
Be happy if Watson, Mccarthy and Darling are all available at pick 18. At least WH will have the choice of whom to pick rather than the choice being taken out of his hands by previous picks (assuming we are going tall at pick 18)

Basically the same reasons I rated Pendlebury so highly. People focus too much on his lack of speed (but Pendlebury has never been flash quick either) and point to some deficiencies in his kicking (he hasn't been playing AFL his whole life and it has rapidly improved.

What he has are the qualities of the true footballer. Admittedly his physical traits aren't standouts, there's no blistering pace and acceleration. But he has composure and awareness that are unrivalled in this year's draft. He can get the ball in a frenzied pack, and quicker than anyone I have seen spot an option or a potential passage of play and set it up. We're talking a Greg Williams like football brain here. (It might stem from his training in cricket given the reflexes a batsmen needs). He is a unique and special talent who we should take at pick 18 if he is there.

All that from a 3 minute youtube video. :D

Even I'm amazed at the lenghts you go to, in order to verify your stupidity.

I have seen much more of Horlin Smith than a 3 minute youtube video. I believe calling someone stupid constitutes a personal attack, and I call on the mods to take appropriate action here.

I don't think that some would want to see Isaac Smiths name in the mix also.
Watson seems the obvious choice right now, but I just feel that it may go somewhere else.
A lightning quick, goal kicking wing-man may be very tempting for WH.

This could be interesting tomorrow night.

The board would go into meltdown :D

Although he has surprised before.

What you mean calling people stupid constitutes an infraction? There are a number of posters who I want retrospectively carded for questioning my intelligence. I don't care if they may have had just cause...I want justice.

After the late mail that Brisbane might take Polec and throw things around a bit, and based on Emma Quayles article ive tried to devise (quickly) how the order might go. Interesting there is 3 ruckman on the go which should be taken by GC, Melb and PA who require them, really benefits us as it means other players will slide as a result.

My only question mark is what Geelong will do at 16, but I postulate McCarthy and Watson will be available ie. we WILL get a KPP

4 WCE Andrew Gaff (mid)
5 Brisbane Jared Polec (mid)
6 Richmond Reece Conca (mid)
7 Gold Coast Shaun Atley (tall mid)
8 Essendon Heppell (tall mid)
9 Gold Coast Caddy (mid)
10 Gold Coast Atley (tall mid)
11 Gold Coast Daniel Gorringe (Ruck)
12 Melbourne Tom Lynch (Ruck)
13 Gold Coast Pitt (tall mid)
14 Adelaide Tape (KPP)
15 Geelong Smedts (tall mid)
16 Port A. Lycett (Ruck)
17 North M. Issac Smith (Mid)
18 Carlton McCarthy (KPP) / Watson (KPP)

Others...
Parker
Hallahan
Prestia
Lamb
