It's a good place to be with this pick and as other more astute posters have pointed out we will get a seriously skilful player with a navy blue kit whoever we get..SPS may be slight in stature but midfielders with his delivery just cannot be overlooked, GO BLUES !

SPS is a very special young footballer and I think the most talented in this draft pool. Nothing ventured nothing gained.
It would take a very brave recruiter to pass on such a prodigious talent if available for selection.
Give the lad a season or so to intergrate and get over his injuries niggles and he'll put plenty of bums on seats for whomever selects him.
Go Blues
I just hope he isn't another Tambling. A gamble we can ill afford to take.
In two years time every chance he will want to go home.

SPS has stated that he wants to play his football in Melbourne.

Strange to compare him to Tambling - what are you seeing as similarities between the two?

Might not be a tambling but there 'seems' some sort of gut-feel link that highly talented players (non-grunt) thrive more in an environment where everything else is already in place (strong midfield). Hawks were ready for Rioli but if Rioli came to the Blues back then...probably he wouldn't have worked out so well. This is debatable of course...does feel right to me.

SPS in theory probably kills it at Sydney, Geelong and GWS. Does he kill it at our club in its current state...maybe... So then it seems with that slightly different feel that it is all a matter of risk.

Brodie a 7.8/10 but 90% to make the transition.
SPS a 8.5/10 but 80% to make the transition at our particular club (weaker midfield)

Might all be toss...might be gut feel playing out.

Home is 8 hours at least from Perth.

Have you read any articles about SPS lately (say AFL website Going Places last week of Fox Footy Article yesterday)? He wants to come to Melbourne to play, and has told both Fremantle and Brisbane (who he barracked for as a child) that.

Suggest there is no real substance to your assertion that he will want to go home in 2 years time.

Hes probably low risk but still higher than a Taranto.

Even though he says he wants to play in Melbourne he's never actually lived here so who knows in afew years time or even 6+ years he might change his mind.

I wouldn't take too much notice of anything that comes out of a 17/18 year as they just don't understand the context. It's like a young person or any person for that matter saying they are ready for their first child. Only a very few are prepared in life for the change that comes.

They can't comprehend the changes. Gibbs would have said he would be a lifelong blue at 17. Henderson would have thought after his move to the Blues that he would stay a Blue for the rest of his career.

Different city, not playing seniors straight away, injuries, loneliness of not being part of the 'in group' straight away just isnt part of what they think through at 17. The promises are hollow.

Nothing has changed as to who I would prefer at 5.

Taranto or SPS

They both bring different, but much needed skill set

Same.
I'm off Brodie now, and would love either one of these guys. Think I have SPS slightly ahead at this stage.

I think we can afford the risk on SPS in this draft. The reality is they all carry some risk. The potential upside of his outside run to compliment his tenacity might be enough to convince SOS. He has that X factor where his 20 touches win a game as opposed to Brodie's 30 that keep the team in it. The reason we can afford the risk? I see a quality inside mid available at 25, especially if GWS lose 15. Palmer, Smedts, Murph's return and internal development give us a chance to grab a match winner.
Having said all that: Taranto, Setterfield or Brodie in that order for mine.

Yep this rings true...though there will always be an element of 'go home' risk for anyone not from Victoria.

Although SPS has said he wants to play in Melbourne, he hasn't actually lived here before and might find in 2-4 years time he hasn't adjusted to it as he thought he would (he certainly has come from a different culture, is still in the process of improving his English - at least the way we say it etc).
While he has made sacrifices for footy regarding not seeing his family, there seems to be very strong ties there and thus a higher risk that one day, even if it is in 6 years time, he might go back closer to them (yes i know Perth is still far away, but it's still closer than Melbourne).

Then there is also the soft tissue injuries, and his 'ok' form this year. Also a query on his endurance levels to play midfield.

Taranto is local, no real injury concerns im aware of, arguably a build more suited for AFL, apparently a good contested mark, hits the scoreboard, lifts in big games, accumulates high possession numbers and also has elite endurance. Seems a 'safer' choice and a player who still has a high ceiling to be like a Luke Parker, who's a star.

Agree that most of the
We can not afford to stuff this one up. Although all draft picks are high risk, the "Go home" factor & soft tissue injuries that SPS has had to date really worries me.

"Safe" bet is TT or WB for mine although Scrimshaw is exactly what we need but a reach at 5.

Yes agree the injury niggles that SPS has sufferd this year are of some concern, but the lad has sparkled whenever on a footy ground.
Skill, foty IQ, good speed and agility are crucial and important traits.
In recent years young players have recovered from badly broken legs and gone on eg the dogs Stringer so I'm not too concerned re SPS minor injuries , the lad is a jet, sublimly skilled footballers are a rare thing.
Go Baggers

I would have to agree with Farktherest on this one, especially if they are rated within 5 - 10% of each other.

Moving interstate to play, even in the home of football, might be very appealing for SPS, but I have seen more than enough cases, some first hand, to suggest they are never really prepared, even with the best support networks.

It is amazing how we can go off players who haven't played a game in 2 months.

The talk of him being too like Cripps is reminiscent of Melbourne picking Toumpas because Wines and Viney were too similar. If Brodie is anything like Cripps I would be wrapt.

Disagree. He lived in Perth for 3 years which is 8 hours flight and then some driving from Halls Creek. Go home to Halls Creek is not an issue.

Doubt SPS will be cleaning cars at a dealership contributing to his injuries either.

From the videos I saw, SPS is fast on the outside, fights for the ball 1 on 1 and is particularly skilful. I think in terms of talent SPS is more than marginally better than TT, Brodie and others said to be around the mark.

Must get if available at 5.

Yes SPS says he wants to play in Melbourne now, however two years is a long time. Just ask Cam Macarthy.
Tambling was highly rated as well and we all know how that turned out. My point is we will have a choice of Taranto or Brodie and would immediately give depth to our midfield.
With our drafting history this should a priority. Selecting someone like SPS is not what our list needs right now.

You can never have enough cripps
