Rendell will have time to duck down the pub between selections.:thumbsu:

Could make for an interesting pronunciation of puopolo.

 Love it. :D

This is something I'm unsure of... do you have to nominate in advance that you are going to upgrade a rookie, or is it just something you do on the day? I would like us to be in a situation where we can arrive at pick 81 and decide ourselves at that stage whether or not we want to take a player, or simply upgrade Schmidt/Thompson. If we have to nominate in advance, however, that flexibility is not there.

AFL draft timetable gives three dates for Primary List Submission:
http://www.afl.com.au/draft key dates/tabid/16414/default.aspx

and List Submission 3 is after the draft, but before the PSD. Assuming the list sub rules are the same as for List Sub 1 - where rookie updates are specifically allowed - we will have a lot of flexibility with the updates.

Edit: Sorry, it's List Lodgement, not List Submission.

Rookie promotions are due by List Lodgement 1, which is on October 29th.
Friday 29 October, 2pm List lodgement one. Rookie promotions, retained second-year rookies, retained third-year international rookies, retained third-year non-registered rookies

Smith....please please please please please please!

Is there any chance of Smith slipping to #14 or is that just wishful thinking??

Im hearing he'll go between 10 and 14 depending on what GC does really.
Its a bit unfortunate that these trades for the crows didnt happend last year because this year we really could have stoked up with MIDS, not many good talls either which we dont need.

no doubt we should get gun with 14. If Rendell stuffs this one he is in big trouble. Should go for the safe bet and pick Smith if there, though i do like McCarthy (Cross between Ottens and Davis - real leader) if we pick him our defence would be unstoppable. Also Tape is a real shooter. Id be surprised if its not one of them.
I have no doubt Rendell would have a couple of names already in his mind and we he will pick one of them.

At 61 might as well go for another hard running midf eg Sewell.

As long as you excel at your position, height barely matters.

Height's a bigger issue if you're an undersized ruckman or KPP. Someone like Jack Darling will slide this year because he's undersized for KPP and too slow to be a mid.

Prestia excels at the clearances and height doesn't really come into play there. The only time it'll be a problem is in the 1-on-1's. But for me he's worth 14.

From what I can gather of Darling's situation, I think he'll be at the GC. They've got enough first rounders that they might be keen to take a punt on him. They haven't really drafted in any mature age key forwards, so they'll be looking for a couple of KPF's who might be ready to go, and from what I can gather, Darling's already played a fair bit of Senior WAFL footy. I could see him heading to GC at either 7 or 9-11, depending on who they feel Essendon will take with 8.

Brodie Smith, Isaac Smith or George Horlin-Smith?

This is where a pick in the 30's would have been handy.

George is an interesting one, goes to my old school and is a year above my brother, hence I know a little about him. I'd be watching this space.

Cool, ta for the clarification guys. I figured it would be too good to be true that we could have a bet both ways like that.

Can't rookies be upgraded any time of the year if there is a spot available due to a LTI?

What if we had one less player on the list, and thus a spare spot even prior to any injury...couldn't we just upgrade a rookie to that spot whenever we deemed necessary or does it have to be to replace a LTI player?

We need another pacy outside mid. What im really hoping for and the crows not addressing is our need for a small forward!!! Port now has attempted to solve this problem with hitchcock and phillips yet we are still waiting on ours. Rendell last year year said he was disappointed that they got hitchcock...well i say be proactive and chose one with either 14 or 61 instead of saying 'oh we missed out'

Just really i think this is the missing link now. Someone like Lamb, Prestia i hope may come to us. I even like the look of Milera and hope we get him.
I looked at the balance of our list. We are missing midfield types and half forwards and small forward crumbers (just my opinion)

I'm pretty sure we're required to completely fill our senior list. No spare spots allowed.

Yes, they can.. but at the end of the season they all revert back to the rookie list. What is being discussed here is the permanent upgrading of the rookies to the senior list as part of the end of season list changes, not the temporary mid-season upgrading of rookie players.

The only reason to enter the season with an incomplete senior list would be due to salary cap restrictions. This has happened in the past. I'm not 100% certain, but I think the AFL now mandates that all senior lists shall contain 38 players.

We will also have the ability to have a "nominated rookie" in 2011, as we will only have 1 player on the veterans list (Michael Doughty). The "nominated rookie" is to all intents and purposes a senior listed player, except that their position is on the rookie list instead.

Beyond that... we have to put a player on the LTI list if we wish to elevate another rookie mid-season.

That's the key for me and if correct then we make our decisions now.

If not, then keep the extra spot for the draft...you never know if you may actually want to use it. Who cares if a rookie upgrade is temporary or permanent during the year...they can still play!

But i suspect you are right with the 'full list' stipulation, thus we'll need to decide pre-draft how many picks we want. Only a few picks will probably separate pick 84 from our first rookie pick anyway so it shouldn't matter too much.

For anyone rubbishing the thought of pick 84...what equivalent draft number was Luke Thompson last year?

What equivalent draft picks were Henderson and Jaensch?

All other teams have a chance to pick the player before our picks...if there is a guy we don't want to miss out on potentially at 84 why don't we consider upgrading Jaensch only (and Luke Thompson becomes the nominated rookie).

If not for our recruiters ability to pick gems late, we couldn't have made the trades we did this week without compromising our list.

Love the look of Smith. I cant believe how strong he is considering it looks like his frame is slight. Able to stand up in tackles with ease. Also quick and disposal looks okay.

Would like to see more of Prestia. I've seen a couple of short vids in the past and he looked very classy and smart with excellent skills.

Hoping we nab one of those two.

Any interest in putting Tyson Slattery on the rookie list?

.
I don't think there is any real need for him. With Johncock, Otten, Stevens, Tambling, Doughty etc all back there, he wouldn't get any more of an oppurtunity than in his time at Essendon.

I know we won't draft him, but I'd love it if Seb Tape came to us. To have a good mate playing for the team I love would be bloody awesome.:p:thumbsu:

He's also a good player too. Quick, agile and takes the game on. Will be a good HBF in a few years time.

Not worth 14 though and won't make it to 61. Honestly, if Smith doesn't make it to 14, we'll be taking a Victorian for sure. We're virtually guaranteed to get a really solid midfielder in this draft.

I see him developing into a KPD. Might not have the height, but more than makes up for it with his leap and excellent spoiling. I can see him going to Geelong at 15, McCarthy is overrated. But, he could realistically go anywhere from 15-40. And he has always been strong at athletics, in most events too. Was actually a FF when he first cracked the 1st 18 at school in year 10.

I think you'll find he'll play a similar role to that of Sam Shaw - versitile, can play anywhere, has speed to burn and loves to run and carry, but isn't quite in the KP mould. More your attacking third tall.

Fair enough, he certainly has good pace. Good to see there are people out there taking notice of him.:thumbsu:

Carl Peterson has been axed and Gamble looks to be gone.

Any interest?

Only things I recall of Peterson if I'm thinking of the right person is some pretty clutch moments and a bit of a goal sneak. Assume he'd be around rookie age.

Gamble at 23 would be interesting, is a utility like Craig seems to like, but has elected to go into 'the draft' according to the article on AFL.com.au (assuming that's the NAB draft)

I thin if Peterson could be rookie'd he would be an interesting prospect.

Gamble has been linked to Port and gc.
Peterson will probably go to West Coast in the PSD if he's not taken in the national draft.

Peterson was reportedly cut because he didn't have the motivation to stick it out and wanted to return to NT. Otherwise, you'd have to consider him.
