Anyone know now that Jacobs is here if we would use our PSD pick on a rookie or another random player re Porplyzia? (well he wasnt random but he was out of the AFL system for a year or so)

If Josh Hill is un contracted and nominates for the draft he for the PSD he would be a good get.

We only get a PSD pick if we don't fill all our vacancies in the national draft. Which is possible - we may look to leave two vacancies and pass on pick 61 in the hopes of unearthing some talent a fortnight later, but I doubt it. The Crows have tended to avoid the preseason draft.

if they are 190+ they better run like the wind and have a booming left foot on them...

Isaac Smith fits that bill nicely. Not a first round pick but if he makes it to 61, which he probably won't since he tore up the recent VFL finals series, we shouldn't hesitate in picking him. He's 190cm but runs like he's 10cm shorter. Is good in the air, has a fantastic leap, is a real jumping jack who'll take MOTY one day. But his ground work and class is where it's really at, has so much speed and his baulking and turning is beautiful to watch. Has consistency issues at present but as a mature-age pick (he's 21) is well-worth it imo. Many clubs are now looking at him so it'll be hard. He actually was playing in the Ballarat Football League before North Ballarat (the VFL side) picked him up mid-way through the season and he's gone from strength to strength ever since. Plays predominantly forward but should become a good AFL wingman where he has played a lot before. If you want a player comparison, we have one of our own in Ricky Henderson. Strikingly similar in many ways (even come from Ballarat!).

Smith....please please please please please please!

Is there any chance of Smith slipping to #14 or is that just wishful thinking??
Chris McDermott reckons Polec could slide because of his disposal issues that arose from Woodville-West Torrens finals series.Let's hope he's right for once.
I would be ecstatic if we could snare either Polec or Smith.

We have as much chance of getting Polec as Voss becoming sane.

As for Gaff, no chance, but I'm not the biggest fan. I'd take him 14, no question, but he doesn't really hurt sides much since he's always skirting around the backs of packs. When he plays offensively, then he becomes a terrific player, but he doesn't do it enough yet. I have no doubt he'll perform well at AFL though, just that kind of player.

I am hoping we take at least 2 more players in the ND/PSD, preferably 14 + 61, unless we feel very confident of a gem in the PSD.

In this supposedly good draft, we'd be silly imo not to have 61 available as an option.

Jaensch a definite upgrade, leaving 3 spots.

Personally, I'd leave Schmidt on rookie list and have Thompson on there as the nominated rookie. Hey it's the AFC, someone will do a LTI and get Schmidt his chance or he can wait till mid year. Either way he shouldn't get too close to our best side unless we have a heap of injuries.

So that leaves 14, 61 and 80-odd/PSD but that last one will be a bit lower as a few will no doubt be passing by then to go to the PSD.

If we get to our final pick and nothing appealing is on offer, we simply have a spare spot and reshuffle Thompson and Schmidt to get one on the senior list.

I certainly don't see a need to upgrade them all now, you just never know if a Rendell gem is gonna be a slider.

As for the first pick, I've already suggested a few realistic ones in this thread (Prestia, Caddy, Parker, Lamb) but I also think we should be looking at guys like Cameron Guthrie and Sam Crocker.

Guthrie is a very smart player, something we need more of in our team since the smart players are the ones who perform best in finals. He's a bit lanky at present but is a good height at 186cm and it shows since he's a good judge of the aerial ball. Often seems to be playing in slow motion since he has so much time. Rarely panics and his delivery by foot is solid. He also has a heap of versatility, you can play him anyway whether it be midfield, back or even forward since he can kick a goal. Don't think he has star quality but he has a good balance of inside and outside and is very likely to be an AFL player. Wouldn't have issue with us picking him up at 14.

As for Crocker, has a bit more energy about him than Guthrie. Can do the inside work but I see him more as an outside player, mainly because he has an absolutely booming kick. The problem with Sam is that too often he'll just smash it on the boot without prior thinking, he needs to be a bit smarter with the ball. A long kick is a great weapon but you have to know when to use it and when to not. He's pretty quick, doesn't break lines as much as he could/should but like I said he's pretty energetic and has the signs of a player who could become very good at AFL level. At 14, would be slightly overpaying at this stage since I see him more of 25-40 but Rendell works in mysterious ways and I think Crocker has ability.
informative stuff. i had not considered those lads. will certainly be interesting to see how we go about our late pick. i like the sounds of smith... interesting stuff

id be dancing. i still reckon polec will go early. Shifter Sheehan reckons smith to be anywhere from 8-16, so theres hope there

Dion Prestia?? Should be there and I know it's only a short clip of him but he looked decent in the the clip of him that's been going around on BF. Only issue is his height, he's only around 175cm... thoughts??

As long as you excel at your position, height barely matters.

Height's a bigger issue if you're an undersized ruckman or KPP. Someone like Jack Darling will slide this year because he's undersized for KPP and too slow to be a mid.

Prestia excels at the clearances and height doesn't really come into play there. The only time it'll be a problem is in the 1-on-1's. But for me he's worth 14.

This is something I'm unsure of... do you have to nominate in advance that you are going to upgrade a rookie, or is it just something you do on the day? I would like us to be in a situation where we can arrive at pick 81 and decide ourselves at that stage whether or not we want to take a player, or simply upgrade Schmidt/Thompson. If we have to nominate in advance, however, that flexibility is not there.

175cm is small, but not too small for AFL level. The important thing in my eyes is that he's got a decent body size despite being that small. You can be 175cm but you don't want to be a twig, or you'll just get brushed aside at AFL level. Prestia has got some bulk to him.

What's also good is that Prestia has a good frame but it isn't the reason he's great at the clearances. It's because he's so balanced, posied and evasive.

That's my concern with a guy like Josh Caddy. He's a bulldozer but how much of that can be attributed to his size, an advantage he won't have in the AFL? The same concerns were over Daniel Rich who made the transition to AFL beautifully, though Caddy isn't at the same level as Rich.

Very similar opinions on players BochChoy!

I can watch Prestia in traffic until the cows come home. Balanced, two sided, explosive. And I've already viewed my thoughts on Isaac Smith, shame we've not got a pick around 38.

I like Guthrie, athletic, disciplined, smart. Just needs to try to damage teams more.

Be quiet Wall E.

Your choice of players is very very very good.

Keep it close to your chest.

Brodie Smith, Isaac Smith or George Horlin-Smith?

This is where a pick in the 30's would have been handy.

One thing's for sure - Rendell is under more pressure than ever to deliver with 14. To have only one pick in the top 60 (!) makes it pretty damn important.

Puopolo with 61

I'd be very happy with this, though it probably doesn't help Petrenko's cause.

Would've been nice to trade out a player surplus to requirements for a pick in the 30's but we probably didn't have one at that perceived value that we were willing to let go.

I think pick 14 chooses itself.
Pick 61 will be where he earns his bucks.
Can he find a roughy that far down?
Does he have a "James Hird" or similiar on the sidelines?

If not he must have a sleeper somewhere in SA country or on a basketball court in Mt Isa!

I may have something up my way.

caught the goss on one of the leading goal kickers in Newcastle.
He needs some work, he weighs about 2 D.Jarmans and runs the 100 in 9.95 hours but kicks goals from anywhere.
After his knee reco he will be back into training about July I think.
Our sponsor will have to stitch 2 jumpers together just to make his sox but he can bring his own footy and shorts and if Rendell tells him there's a Macca's across the road then we should be in.
