My updated phantom: to get this thread back on track, minus academy players.

1. Weitering - carlton
2. Schache - brisbane
3. Weideman - melbourne
4. Parish - essendon
5. Curnow - essendon
6. Oliver - gold coast
7. Collins - melbourne
8. Mckay - carlton
9. Francis - adelaide

11. Burton - carlton
12. Gresham - richmond
13. Milera - adelaide

If GC don't take Milera, I reckon theres a serious chance he could slip to 13 as I don't see Carlton or Richmond taking him.

But we seem to hate SA boys so we will probably go and draft somebody else...

What makes you say that? The club just doesn't believe in preferencing SA players if there are others that they rate more highly available, particularly with our 1st round draft pick.

From recent years, Davis & Smith were both drafted from SA clubs. Dangerfield, Lever & Talia were drafted from Victoria.

Pick 9 is Milera, Francis or McKay. It's a virtual certainty now that at least one of these 3 is available and it's blatant that we'll select them. If they're all gone (they won't be), we'll take Weideman, Curnow, Oliver or whoever inexplicably drops as a result.

Pick 13 is one of the above if magically available, or Burton, Tucker or Balic. I think the only way anyone else comes into the frame at 13 is if a) we select Milera at 9, and b) all 3 of Burton, Francis and H McKay are off the board. We'd then be looking at a Mathieson, Hibberd, Gresham or whoever the club is into out of those other types (it won't be another outside mid).

Logical pairings:
Milera / Burton
Francis / Tucker
Francis / Balic
McKay / Tucker
McKay / Balic

Dream pairing:
Milera / Francis (I don't care which order we select them in!)

My personal worst case scenario:
McKay / Balic (fully aware that both of these guys have their fans, but I'm not among them and I'll be avoiding BF for a month if we grab them BOTH)

Pretty difficult to get a read on exactly what will be available to us, but my best guess at this stage is that we jag Milera at 9 and Burton at 13.

Yes. Delisting contracted players is exceedingly rare, especially when they're on more than a draftee salary. We're simply not going to do it - we might try and trade Mackay out, but failing that he will stay with us until the end of his contract, because that's the way it goes. Also, being an All Australian junior doesn't mean jack shit if the player isn't cutting it at senior level, and so far Wigg has given no indication whatsoever that he can.

We just traded in 3 players who play in his position, it's ludicrous to think that he's not under a lot of pressure for his spot on the list now.

Grigg average tank...consistently in the top 5 of all preseason runs. +14 in the beep in his draft year. Lacks pace yes, but never a query on endurance

On the players time off Grigg didn't go away, he stayed and worked as a Landscaper. Gotta admire that really. I think he'll lift this year and give it a good nudge.

I think Carlton would be all over Milera like a cheap suit. He is exactly the type of player that SOS likes.

If, by some pure luck, Milera and Francis are both there at Pick 9, I would go Francis. Based only that I keep hearing/Reading that Milera is a large flight risk and might get him in 2 years time anyway

Is he? That's news to me, and wouldn't have thought so. He still seems to struggle to put in a 4 quarter performance.

But if so, then he better get his act together this year because he could be a very handy inside midfielder I think. Strong tackler with good intensity at the contest.

Is that because he usually comes on in the 3rd quarter so misses the first 2??

He is one of the better endurance players, if you watch him he is generally going at the same speed the whole game and in taxing games, seems quicker at the end due to his endurance.

There was one game last year where he was chasing down players in the last quarter and looked really good.

The issue is he isn't overly blessed with speed to begin with.

With the draft in Adelaide it wouldn't surprise me that we would give a brochure like that to all draftees, got to make a good impression and show them what's good about the city in case you want to convince them to ask for a trade at some point in the next 10 years.

Im only going on gut and highlight videos (and Skippos)...

I'll back the recruiters in. If they see our biggest need as a HFF and JJ replacement, then so be it!

Practically every coach who has ever coached gets sacked. If Sanderson hadn't been sacked, he wouldn't have been available to get hired in his current role.

Next years draft is full of mids. This is the year teams are going to look for kpp. Essendon, melbourne and carlton are all in need of kpp. Pick 3 is critical. If melbourne go for weideman or curnow essendon will take parish at 4 and then the kpp melbourne didnt take. Melbourne last year drafted petracca and brayshaw they also have viney, tyson, vince, jones and trengove. They could go parish but i think their move up the order is to gain a kpf to partner hogan as they lack in this area. They have kpd in mcdonald and garland who plays tall/small but after losing frawley they are limited in options. If its true about milera and francis being flight risks i cant see these 3 clubs choosing them over oliver

Melbourne have Oscar McDonald and Frost waiting in the wings and Dunn with a few good years yet. Collins is good but not that high, they'll take best available.

I think Essendon and Melbourne will share Parish, Weideman, Francis and Curnow. The order isn't really important to the rest of us.

Don't see either Francis or Milera being flight risks. Clubs will take the best talent and back themselves.

I just don't get why people put much faith in the "Combine" results other than perhaps it gives an idea of the players speed and endurance, the Buckley kicking test is a joke basically kicking at "cones" and consisting of 5 kicks, IMO the most important segment of the combine is the interviews/character tests.

Much more important what the kids actually do on the football field, when all is said and done that's where they have to perform under match conditions.
