Knight is a little different given he played a different role, had real pace etc. But yes, it does apply for Crouch v Lyons and Grigg. It didn't stop other players finding their way into the best 21, because they were good enough to demand a spot. Lyons & Grigg weren't (Kerridge wasn't even good enough to make the 22). Contrast them with Matt Crouch & Riley Knight - these kids were good enough to be selected in the best 21. Good kids find a way, mediocre kids get stuck in no-man's land.
Given we went 33 years without it, it was a big change up given how much the game has changed since it was last active. I really wouldn't be comparing much of what happened in the game back in 1930 to the modern game, irrelevant for the most part imo.Substitute players were not something new that the AFL introduced recently. They've actually existed for over 50 years.
- The first sub rule was introduced in 1930, with the introduction of a 19th man. Once replaced, players were unable to return to the field.
- In 1946 they introduced a second substitute, the 20th man. Once again, replaced players were unable to return to the field.
- In 1978 the interchange system was introduced - the first time that players were able to leave the field and return.
- The sub-rule as we know it now was introduced in 2011.
So, since the game's rules were first codified in 1858...
- 72 years without any interchange or substitution (1858-1929)
- 48 years with substitution but no interchange (1930-1977)
- 33 years with interchange but no substitution (1978-2010)
- 5 years with interchange and substitution (2011-2015)
The sub rule, much reviled as it is, is more traditional than the interchange.
Of course it's held players back, they've played less game time than they would have otherwise meaning they've had less chance to prove they've been worthy of a position in the side.In any case, it hasn't held players back. Those who were good enough found their way into the side. Those who weren't either got stuck on the fringes or ended up back in the state leagues. Either way, they weren't a great loss to the game because they simply lacked the talent.
This is the key bit.. Good players found their way into the starting team, just as they have since time immemorial. It was only the mediocre players who found themselves on the fringes who found themselves constantly being selected as the sub. It didn't hurt their development - they just weren't/aren't good enough in the first place to push beyond the fringes and into the starting team.Of course it's held players back, they've played less game time than they would have otherwise meaning they've had less chance to prove they've been worthy of a position in the side.
Would be terrible for a players confidence playing as the sub, multiple times as well when you come in and out of the side.

Me too , he's exactly what we lack and will definitely be able to play in midfield with developmentCheers mate.
Too bad about Francis not testing but it's good to hear that Milera did well in the repeat sprinting as he's currently the player I would like the most for our club.
I like Himmelberg but that's too early, I'd go ben mckay in front of him at 13There's continuing whispers on us connected with tall KPP
Mckay and Oliver would be a great result, just not as sexy because they ain't South AussiesAll i'd expect to get "some" games .......highly doubt Collins and Cole though .....tough role for undersized KPD's ....unless your Lever
Francis you'd say could play 8 games ......have to remember AFL is a HUGE jump for the boys and an AFL season is brutal on the unconditioned bodies of young players
West AdelaideYour question was, who was equal in flexibility remember?I just don't see Curnow anyway close to the level of Francis. Reminds me of Hodge.
Dunkley , keays, white, hibberdWhich players can we expect to play games next year? Hopper, Mills, Kennedy, Parish, Collins, Cole, Francis? Who else?
He's more a tom lynch role or even hendo off half backYep ..can certainly see why you said that
Re players holding the ball in one hand .....some to me looks like arrogance/showoff .....yet others like Himmelberg it looks more like self confidence .....each to view differently on that matter
Would certainly welcome any bid there
West AdelaideProbably from a height perspective i agree ......depends on whether the club sees Ben McKay as purely a KPD or a KPF of the futureI like Himmelberg but that's too early, I'd go ben mckay in front of him at 13
Height and style , good agility and ground ball and not great in the airProbably from a height perspective i agree ......depends on whether the club sees Ben McKay as purely a KPD or a KPF of the future
I've said b4 we won't take a KPD with either #9 or #13
West AdelaideYep, any of those combinations are a great result ......depends on whether the club goes tall or mid at #9???Mckay and Oliver would be a great result, just not as sexy because they ain't South Aussies
West AdelaideGiven McKay dropped out this year to play with mates .....does that scream "go Home" ???Height and style , good agility and ground ball and not great in the air
B McKay - yep he could be a forward , needs development but high potential
Nup , screams lack of confidence and not sure of himselfGiven McKay dropped out this year to play with mates .....does that scream "go Home" ???
Would be happy with an Austrian town at 13, but not at 9. At 9 I'd prefer somewhere warmer.I just googled that for you, and apparently he's a town in Austria
Sure I do.Your question was, who was equal in flexibility remember?
Severely doubt that any 18 year old would have any more than a few mm's left to grow height wise.Would you class Francis as 3rd tall material?
Any growth possibly left in him???
Here is a summary of Draft Ratings of a few of the scribes ... I've included in what I could find without too much searching, but happy to add any other lists (or fix some I have in here) if anyone posts them. Also happy to change the criteria or the sort based on different variables that anyone thinks works better.
It's just sorted by a simple weighted average, so it isn't a very deep analysis

<EDIT> added in some rudimentary weighting.
Sando / Buck / Anderson < Champ Data < Skippos / Nightmare
West AdelaideThis board has tagged players "go home" for much less ......apparently Harry has the outgoing personality and Ben is more reservedNup , screams lack of confidence and not sure of himself
Actually a plus that he considered himself not good enough but then developed enough in 1 season to be a standout
West AdelaideBicks she's been a very good Phantom Drafter as you say for a few years ......she's had quite a few "diversions" this year & not sure she's as in tune with this draft as previous yearsAny chance you can add in Paige Cardona's Mock draft Edition 3 to your spread sheet?
She's recognised as a good judge of young talent and has been doing her mock drafts for quite a few years.
http://footyprophet.com/paiges-afl-phantom-draft-edition-three/
Have Brendan Goddard as captain. If we can draft Himmelberg, it could be the first step towards us also securing Jesse Hogan and Jay Schulz next year
Looks to be a very credible summary of each players talent and about in line with most mainstream mock drafts I've seen, I rate her highly as do the young TAC players she has interviewed etc.Bicks she's been a very good Phantom Drafter as you say for a few years ......she's had quite a few "diversions" this year & not sure she's as in tune with this draft as previous years
