You say your unlikely to give up 2x2nd rounders for a guy rated at 23

But then state Brisbane did the exact same thing for Dev Robertson

I think he’s assuming they rated Robertson much higher than where he was.

If you’ve watched the demons video from that draft they knew who we were trading up for. They were holding out for Rivers.

Says to me we assumed Brisbane would take Jones or we didn’t have great intel. Cause North had two picks and we assume that they wouldn’t have done the trade had they been holding a candle for Jones. Dees with Rivers and Brisbane had 1.

Yeh you jumped in early

Still trades have shown you need to give up a fair bit in the future to get a player of need/want. Doesnt necessarily mean you had them top 10

True, could be you rate them significantly higher than the others around there or just like the fit.

I’m a little disappointed we have done a trade out like that cause you can really screw teams that are desperate.

Starting to come around to being happy with Chesser at 17, has the speed, endurance and size combination for a midfielder

Doesnt seem a soft player who cant go inside either

I havnt seen him play much though i know he was rated highly at the start of the year

If it’s true and Trudgeon has grown to 193cm, some serious Luke Parker vibes about him.

Pigs might fly.

Would like to see player salary information published though. Or at least something a bit more detailed than the completely aggregated data that the AFL currently releases, like clubs’ TPP positions.
Agree, more transparency would be great.

eDPS Am I right in saying that Goater has some resemblance to early Heppell?
Their height and midfield/half back position would be the only similarity. Goater is far more athletic where as Heppell was the harder worker and better leader.

Yeah that was the folly, saying we would’ve taken jones with the Sydney pick anyway. If I recall Jones called dodoro after the first night of the draft and asked him to please take him the next day, and 8 picks happened before they made a move. I’d say it’s likely they rated jones around the 20-26 range and when he was still on the board after that they traded up guessing one of the clubs 30-34 would’ve taken him, likely Brisbane at 33 or someone else trading up.

See my earlier post. I am not sure if the tag worked because I had an issue with the quote. That Port and Adelaide had south aussie boys in the range probably make it even more likely that we knew that we didn't need more than 30 to take Jones.

The other thing I'd say in Dodoro's favour, and I'd hope by now I'm regarded as being a long way from a sycophant, is that he made the comment before Jones had played a game. That's a lot of pressure to heap on a kid for no real gain. He also doesn't make the 'we rated him in the first round' argument much. In fact, in the last 10 years I really only think it is Laverde, Ridley and Jones and none of it was as a matter of hindsight. That's not a bad record.

When your first round is:

1. Rowell ; 2. Anderson; 3. Jackson; 4. Ash; 5. Stephens, 6. McAsey; 7. Young; 8. Serong; 9. Henry; 10. Green; 11. Flanders; 12. Pickett; 13. Day; 14. Bergman; 15. Weightman; 16. Stephens; 17. Kemp; 18. Georgiades; 19. De Koning; 20. Philp; 21. Dow;

it's not exactly loaded with players who have shown better form or more potential than Jones has as a 196cm, contested marking CHF with high quality athleticism. He was always going to be a bit of a slower burn, too. Highlighted are the only players I would consider ahead of Jones. Special mention to Georgiades, he has come on very quickly for a guy who had a lot of injuries. They play differently, Georgiades is more explosive but Jones better above head and seemingly a better endurance athlete but I think he and Jones have a very similar ceiling.

I'll give Dodoro the benefit on this one.

But you show with those examples you have to give up a fair bit of the future to get someone you really like
My assumption is that most teams with pick 30 are probably getting someone low 20s or earlier on their list anyway. So to pay two seconds they probably have to rate them higher than that.

My memory is that the post draft word was Port were desperate to get Georgiadis or Jones with 18. They paid a future first and 29 to do so.
Geelong wanted georgiades was the word but were always taking Stephens first, so port passed on him he would’ve gone there at 19. If geelong hadve taken georgiades at 16 port would’ve taking de koning at 18.

Ideal:

11. Goater
51. Warner
56. Rankin

What I think will happen:

11. Sinn
51. Fejo Jr
56. Curtis

We don’t really have enough gaping needs or enough picks to be really mad whatever happens. I will be pissed if we draft a ruckman in the National draft though, there’s not enough stoppages going around to properly develop him and he wouldn’t really get a chance.

Have the "trading future picks to top up current draft hand" rumours flaked out or is there still an expectation that we'll do something on or before draft night?
Haven’t heard it recently - picks are fixed now until the draft itself anyway. But I would expect we’re still looking to get the players we want though so it wouldn’t be off the table, especially once bid matching is done and the back picks move up a bit.

We are probably only going to offer up a future 2nd rounder (can’t see us offering up next years 1st) and sides that have picks in the 19-30 range are in rebuild(hawks) or rebuild on the run mode (tigers/cats) so I think it would be unlikely anything will happen.

It appears there is a really good chance an Amiss, Gibcus or Mac Andrew are available at our pick and then Ports pick. I dont think any suit us for needs

Been noted Tigers might trade up with 17 + 30. Surely Freo become really interested if its a fwd Andrew or Amiss. GWS may well also pull the trigger if they prefer whoevers left over a Van Rooyen by a fair bit. Also would think Gold Coast will be another option now aswell (With losing Greenwood)

Im happy to do that if were happy to take 1 of A.Draper, Sonsie, Chesser, Willmott, Knevitt

Something like this with suns
3 way
Brisbane in: F2 (Gold Coast) ~20
Brisbane Out: Pick 20

Ess in: F1 (Gold Coast) + Pick 20 (Brisbane)
Ess out: F1 + Pick 13

GC in: F1 (Ess) + Pick 13 (Amiss/Gibcus/Mac Andrew)
GC out: F1 + F2
