Reid is very youn g at the moment. He need to build his upper body over the preseason and get heaps and heaps of kicking parctice, with set shots and on the run.If he islates his weakness and focuses with plenty of practice he'll turn things around,i am sure he has every other attribute to become a very dangerous mobile forward who in time will be a nightmare to match up on.
Yes there are certain similarities to tarrant in fact with wights to his upper body he can build up like tarrant.
I still reckon the kid will be avery good player for us.Imagine the mobilty of Cloke, Reid, Rusling, Medhurst ,Dawes as our big KPP,and didak scouting the packs.
Very mobile and dangerous forward line once this group clicks.
Also regarding an earlier thread i was one of the people who thought we should have grabbed Kurt Tippett. You see he is becoming a very good player.
Obviously Hine and Co didn't think so.

I think too much has been made of reid's kicking.

He kicked 2.4 last year, and 2 behinds this year. The figures aren't great but nothing alarming for a player that has just turned 19.

His run up against carlton was clearly a nerves issue. He seemed like he knew he couldnt get the distance/accuracy, yet had no options - no one was leading.

Was disappointed with his kick on the run in the bulldogs game though... but hopefully its a case of once he finds his feet he'll be a reliable kick.

Travis Cloke only had one problem with his kicking-accuracy. He has otherwise been a long thumping kick. Technique-good , distance- excellent, variation in pace-good, accuracy for goal-ordinaryThis you can put down to mental problems.

The trouble with Reid is that he is a poor kick full stop-accuracy-poor, distance -poor, technique-poor, variation in pace-non existent. I guarantee you ,these problems are too great to be fixed. He will always be a poor kick unless a miracle occurs. Examples to prove my argument that players who are poor kicks usually don't improve- Licuria, R. Shaw, O'Bree, Tarrant, Prestigiacomo, Richo from the tigers... the list is endless. Plyers that have improved....well, I can't think of any...maybe you can????

There is nothing wrong with Reid's kicking. Don't base all your decisions on the AFL performances. He has had about 10 kick in total! In fact this is not the brightest thread. Reid was a great kick at the under 18's level and he is a pretty good kick at VFL level. Not perfect but far from "poor kick full stop". Do you Reid nay-sayers think the Collingwood recruiters are straight-up dumb? This is a multi-million dollar corporation. Moreover, two of the players above have been all-Australians. Of of them is one of Richmond's all-time greats. This is a silly thread. Reid will be fine. I remember everyone writing Brown off last year when Goldsack debuted before him.

Nothing wrong with Reid's kicking????? Pretty good kick at VFL level???? have you actually watched REid at VFL level???? His kicking has been as diabolical as it has at AFL level.

As for Collingwood's recruiters- do you mean these same guys who traded pick 3 in 1999 for Steve McKee in favour of taking Pavlich, and then took Roach who was a dud at pick 6, in a super draft. The same guys who made no.1 picks out of Billy Morrison, telling al us gullible fools that he was the next Wayne Carey... then there was Richard Cole ect ect. Yes recruiting has improved in the last two years, but its coming off a very low base. I will believe these guys know what they are doing when I see results, not from the words of the rose coloured glasses fraternity who continue to be deluded by the true quality of our side.

Come on now, I think you are overstating the whole poor kick thing. I don't think it is as bad as you are saying and I have seen quite few of his VFL games too. He is being judged on that poor run up and the shank kick last week.

I think that most of his problems are due to nerves and subsequent lack of composure. When nervous you can tend to look up too quickly and not watch the ball onto the boot. I suspect that he will iron out much of his problems with experience and confidence. He may not be a brilliant kick but I'm confident he can become a good, or at least useful one.

Yes, that is a list of poor drafting.

But we could talk about the criticism that the recruiters received when they took Thomas at 2 and Pendles at 5 and somehow got goldsack in the 60's. We took Rusling to everyone's shock aswell. We took Maxwell in a rookie draft instead of an established player (was it Paul Lynch who had been training with us but then was snubbed?). We have not done that bad. And I have seen Reid play well many times in the VFL this year and last on some pretty average teams. Hard to play well at CHF on a shite team. Moreover, McKee lead us to two Grannies and was a great player before the centre bounce rule change. Man, if all us off were written off at 19 we wouldn't be doing much right now. I have faith in Reid and I think he will be really good. I don't think he will be a Ron Todd or a Dick Lee, but I think he will play 150 games - there, I am on the record now. I may prove to be a sage or a dumbass.

As a Carlton supporter and from an outside perspective and i already know i will get bagged just for being here (what can i say - in one of those Carlton/Collingwood families).

Watching Ben Reid v Carlton this year. He looked a very good prospect. Played on Waite to start with and was beating him easily - leading Waite to the ball and out marking him. i did laugh at his shot for goal, as everyone did. But that will come. Big crowd, only played a few games and this was a big game.

ben reid is in his second year, 6 games in ? what a shock he isnt kicking bags of goals already, who woulda thought a 19 year old finding his feet early in his career. whats frustrated me more is the time his injury has come , if he had have played the rest of this year with rocca out , it would have benefited the kid so much and gave him a lot of experience for next year.

I agree with OniAu - the timing of the injury sux. He could have gained some great experience over the next few games. Key marking forwards who dominate games early in their careers are not easy to find. Comes a lot easier for the mids. He will be a good get for you guys.
