Normally I'd point out that "supplements" can mean protein powder, Glutamine etc, but I know you know your stuff.

I'm not listening, so what makes you think he slipped up?
Will have to watch again to make sure, but he said substan- then went back to supplements.

I think it's because the reporter worded it as substances. Hird had probably been given a directive not to use that word due to its negative connotations, and just changed mid word. Wouldnt say it was a slip up, he was just using the same word that the reporter used.

He slipped up because they all tried to keep it very general and vague as to what actually happened.

Before he said that you didn't know what type of issue it was, just that they were investigating "something".

Saying it was a supplement gives a clue as to what actually happened.

A lot of athletes who have tested positive to banned substances in Australia (for example in powerlifting) have been due to dmaa.

Dmaa is basically a caffeine/stimulant substance which is in a lot of bodybuilding pre-workout supplements (eg. Jack3d). A lot of the people were unaware that one of the particular ingredients are against doping laws and have been banned from competing due to testing positive to it.

Not saying that this is DMAA, just it might be.

Reading between the lines it sounds like players were taking sports supplements of some kind and then someone discovered one of the ingredients may be against doping laws.

Probably that. If I was in a situation publicly speaking like that I would choke.

I want to know who the hell is this "former" player who has opened their mouth about this and why he was contacted about it. Puts himself in a bad position as well as all of his teammates who signed this "form"

Surely they could just say there's an investigation under way and then have a press conference after something has actually been discovered. At the moment they're getting asked questions and answering them with "we can't discuss this", seems pointless.

I agree wholeheartedly. We have to look like we are up front about it though, and a press conference does that. Even if the press conference was completely non-eventful like the one we just had.

Sounds like we got Reimered.

These suppliments are tablets that players took to recover from matches quicker. The sports scientish guru was sacked. When he was sacked, then the AFL looked into it. People will make this out to be worse than it really is.

Essendon don't know that much about it at the moment. They are investigating it aswell with the help of the AFL, ASADA and whoever else. The investigation will take sometime. Rest easy, we will all know about in over time.

I am proud today to call myself an Essendon member. The club are on the front foot about this and want a 100% clean club. I love my club and will continue to do so for this exact reason :hearts:

First of all, DMAA is not a caffeinated ingredient. It is a separate ingredient which was usually included with caffeine.

Second of all, DMAA is outright illegal in Australia, and I think in many other places. Which means no product containing the ingredient DMAA is to be sold or used in Australia.

However, the ingredient DMAA was legal until mid-last year. It was banned at the end of July, with a 2 week notice.

So it really depends on whether this is using it early last year, or recently.

That's not to say it is the inclusion of DMAA, as it could be ANYTHING, or even if any players actually used anything against the law/rules of the game - but simply if it was.

Just a thought, but if it was a recovery "substance/supplement", could it explain the proliferation of injuries in the 2nd half of the year, if they realised at that point that we could be in breach of anti doping laws if we continued to take it/them?

This is just terrible. Where there is smoke, there is fire. Seems similar to what Adelaide did in the Tippett saga, and they were in the wrong too. I just hope not, and that this is dealt with before the season starts.

Sorry my quote should have been caffeine-like. It is a stimulant and gives you alertness and focus like caffeine, but without the jitters that megadosing caffeine can give.

It was actually banned mid august from memory for the general public, but has been against anti-doping laws for a few years at least.

I have been using it for morning gym sessions for years. Also have about 2 years supply of pre-workout with it left, plus an additional 5g pure which is about 200 doses.

Only reason i assumed it was DMAA is that most accidental doping positives have been due to it. By accidental, i mean people who are not deliberately trying to cheat the system by intentionally taking PED.

LOL, if you know absolutely nothing about something, best not comment.

Creatine is not and will never be illegal.
Creatine has no association whatsoever with muscle tears.
I'd be surprised if there are any AFL players not taking creatine.

Did you mis-read his post? He didn't say it was illegal.

Massively increasing your training load whilst taking creatine is fraught with danger.

Club has done the right thing in coming out and addressing the issue straight up. The alleged "player" who has been spoken to needs to have the balls to name themselves or just shut the **** up if they have a chip on their shoulder for being dumped. If it wasn't a problem for them then why is it now? If it happened at all. In the current sporting environment one inclination of injecting/taking a substance/supplement and the media goes coco bananas.

The fact is the club sort out the AFL and not the other way around. Nothing to really worry about until the investigation is completed and if found to be guilty then so be it and the right whack will be taken.

while i welcome anything that knocks Lonergan off the perch he was placed upon by silly essendon fans that thought he was anything but a dud, i don't think providing the media (and hence essendon fans) with information that was 100% gonna come up in the investigation is a very big deal

I used DMAA as well, not for years or whatever, but I did for a while.

I noticed that I usually felt light headed and on top of the world before and during a workout, occasional shakes. But coming off it, I just felt a huge crash. Felt weak as hell.

What some people don't realize is that DMAA was also a recreational drug, because it gives you a euphoric feeling. It can also be addictive if you don't learn to cycle it properly, so that your body knows how to detox off it

The thing is, like all recreational drugs, if you're addicted to it, you can get really moody, and enter a depressive-like state when you stop using it completely.

McVeigh - Channel 9 regular in 2013....
You should be asking why didn't your captain/ players open their mouths, rather than leave it until others pressed so hard they had to call an investigation
