Is there anything you dont no about Essendon

Lol.......

Like I've said about 200 posts ago,I get all my info from books I've got at home.

But its only 3,"Flying Higher, the History of the EFC" which only goes up to 1996 ( thats why I don't post to many questions about players from the last 6 or 7 years),

"The Champions of Essendon" book and one of those little "Encyclopedia of AFL Footballers" Essendon version.:)

The rest is from the old memory bank:thumbsu:

hmm i bet he doesnt know what was happening in 1949 grand final, second qtr, 5 mintue mark?:p :D

Richard S (You can't call him anything else on Big Footy) Reynolds kicked a goal to go 37 points in front.
It broke the Blues' back, and Syme, Coleman and McEwan all goaled to put the game out of their reach.

Speaking of King Richard...

What type of small business did the EFC set up for D1ck after a few years at the club?

I've seen photos of him running a milk bar and making milkshakes for players, so I'll go with that. A Milk Bar.

Good One..Correct:thumbsu:

Well how about Mero putting up some questions?

How about that mero? Maybe some about the recent players from the last 10 years?

I've just about run out of player profiles to make up questions about:p

I think I've covered every player ever played before 1996!:D

What about these:

1. Who wore the numbers before the star they're remembered for (in the seniors):
27 Before Simon Madden
25 before Roger Merrett
18 before Paul Van der Haar
13 before Michael Long

2. Who was the 1000th player to play for Essendon from 1897?

3. How many players have played for Essendon since 1897?
Hint Richard Cole is the last.

4. What two surnames have each been used by 8 different players through Essendon's history?
(Which is equal most for the number of players sharing a surname)
Hint. One is the surname of a current player.

I won't have a go at the jumper number questions cause I can look them up in two seconds with that Flying Higher book.......

.....but the other ones I will need to think about:cool:

If the book was right.
I had to go through every season to get the right numbers done, the book misses players for virtually every number.

13 before Michael Long

Tony Antrobus

2. Who was the 1000th player to play for Essendon from 1897?

Paul Barnard. It was at the time, thought to be Justin Blumfield but a player was missed in the original count.

I can't remember the exact details, were there two players with the same name or something like that?

3. How many players have played for Essendon since 1897?
Hint Richard Cole is the last.

1063

I'll have a crack at Watson as one of them.

Longy says "take me on"

Goal - Ant was 13 before the other Longy.
Goal - The problem was with two brothers who played in the same season with the same first initial, in the same number. I'll look up what their names were tonight.
Goal - Cole was the 1063rd senior player
Goal. Watson is one of them.

In regards to question four, the other has to be Smith. Logical answer.

Logical, but incorrect, I'm afraid.
There were only 7 Smith's.
Dave Smith
Lou Smith
Max Smith
Noel Smith
Ray Smith
Ron H. Smith
Tommy L. Smith

I just looked it up, there are only seven Smith's. But there are also only seven Watson's and nine McDonald's.

There's 8 Watsons

1932 Carl Watson 11
1929-30 Ernie H. Watson 23
2003 Jobe Watson 34
1975-78 Larry Watson 31
1997 Matthew Watson 1
1920 Percy Watson 1
1898 Pos Watson 2
1977-91,1993-94 Tim Watson 307

I must have missed the McDonalds, but there's another surname with 8 players.

Yes,that Flying Higher book has heaps of mistakes and player details left out.

Hope this new one their bringing out this year is a bit more precise.

Number 13 before Michael Loang was Darren Daisy Williams , because Antrobus worn number 2 from memory and him and Michael Long played footy together

From memory, Williams actually wore number 2 in his second stint at the club because Antrobus had number 13.

From memory, Williams actually wore number 2 in his second stint at the club because Antrobus had number 13.

Actually, Daisy came back in 1991, when Longy had already inherited 13.
Andrew Underwood (#2) had been delisted and gone to Richmond, and Longy had wanted 13 when he came to the club, but Antrobus had it.
So Longy got 13, and Daisy got 2.

Interestingly, Underwood was #2 after Antrobus, who couldn't get his favorite 13 because Daisy was wearing it.

Daisy Williams. #13. 1984-1989. #2 1991 (Reserves only)
Michael Long #4 1989-1990. #13 1991-2001
Tony Antrobus #2 1987-1989, #13 1990
Andrew Underwood #9 1989. #2 1990

PS Anyone know these?
27 Before Simon Madden
25 before Roger Merrett
18 before Paul Van der Haar

I actually heard Longy say he wanted 13 because Antrobus had worn it.

Although Michael Long was known to tell the odd story.

I bet he was deadpan when he said it. He's a very funny guy.

His dad wore 13 for St Mary's in the NTFL for years and years.
That's why he wore 13.

Yeah, you're right.

After the 1993 GF he was asked - "You were down for a while at the end of the last quarter, were you injured or were you just having a rest?"
ML - "Nah, I was just looking for worms."

"33 disposals, 2 goals, not a bad day out."
ML - "Yeah, I was pretty bloody good wasn't I?"

Love him.

Sheedy tells a story of him coming up to him towards the end of a marathon training session.
It's getting dark.
Longy tells him he has to go in.
Sheedys asks why.
Longy looks him in the eye and says "it's my legs"
What's wrong with them? asks STG
"They're badly bruised, they're black all over" Longy replies.
Sheedy doesn't know what to say, so he lets him go into the rooms.

I love the one about Longy years ago in a team meeting and Sheeds starts the session off by writing on the brand new flash white board.

Longy puts his hand up and asks Sheeds something along the lines of

"What happen to the old Black board? Wasn't it good enough for you?"

Antrobus wore 2 and 13.

According to my records..13 went Daisy-Ant and then Longy.
