Essendon have just set an new AFL era record

Sure BT everyone wants to win flags, but lets not pretend each season is completely binary.

I think most take a fairly binary view on success. Essendon not winning a final is a fun ribbing for opposition supporters but only sides who have won a flag look back on history fondly imo. I enjoy ripping into Carlton supporters about their 6 spoons this century doesn't mean I think Essendon not winning the spoon was any great achievement.

I disagree strongly, but then I haven't seen the extended years of premiership success many Carlton & Essendon fans have.

I'd take St Kilda or Freo's grand final heartbreaks over 16 years without finals

i was too young for the 80s flags, but i remember distinctly the excitement of '93. i was 10 and the world felt a joyous place.
I was at 2000 (and 2001 :( ) That was special. though odd rocking up to a GF and knowing there was zero doubt. At least in 01 the Lions looked a hardened, tough side. I remember ending up at Windy Hill (having zero clue where Essendon was or how to get back to the Sth East....i sent my sister over the west gate to pick me up :p). It was awesome.

Going to a GF is something else to every game of the year. Prelims are stressful.
Elims are nothing but a nice day at the footy.

In 30 years of following footy, let me speak from some experience. This finals record does not concern me one bit. The flag drought does.

Yep. I doubt Carlton's two EF wins during that time means anything when they won 5 wooden spoons and qualified for only 3 finals series (2009-2011) since 2001, although they also played in 2013 when we were kicked out.

We may rightfully cop some heat for not winning a final with that pathetic record, but they've objectively been a lot worse than us.

I'm more concerned about the fact that we haven't been anywhere near contenders for a top 4 spot rather than the EF drought.
It doesn't mean a lot in the grand scheme of things but two of my fondest football memories have been the two finals wins I've seen against Essendon and Richmond. I wasn't around for the flags though so I'm sure for some older Blues fans it doesn't compare. Still an awesome feeling though to go to walk to the MCG for a final with the buzz around the ground and then to win. Yes there were false dawns but in 2011 we thought Carlton might have been climbing up the ladder a bit. Obviously that didn't eventuate but it was still a great feeling at the time.

I don’t think they’ve ever looked as bad as Richmond 2001-17..at the same time never looked like winning a final maybe aside from capitulating against us in 2014. Played some exciting footy in patches throughout this 16 year patch, where as Richmond were just plain frustrating. Either way far too long for such a big club.
if you think Richmond 2001-2016 were hopeless you should of seen Richmond 1984-1993,they were absolutely depressing, even Essendons drug saga period failed to sink to the despairing depths of fundraising to save a club from extinction like Richmond had to do,poor KB

Jesus, if people complain about Gold Coast’s start as an expansion club, should show them those Bulldogs and Hawthorn numbers.

Don't agree. I think some fans view sport as flags or nothing, but every fan has a varied standard for success for each season. For many, winning a few finals is great and points to promise. The problem for sides who don't win flags in a period is that it also often comes with failure and the success is not sustained. Just look at Collingwood, the side hasn't won many flags in the past 60 years. But they've made many grand finals and have constantly been in the finals, giving fans steady enjoyment.

Check North's drought too - the then VFL were savage on zoning for the VFA teams that joined the comp in 1925. We had Williamstown as part of South Melbourne's zone for decades.

Wow. Just about St. Kilda’s entire existence is in this table.
1897-1913
1913-1939
1939-1965
1973-1992

It's absolutely embarrassing, no doubt about it, and any fellow Essendon fan who tries to argue against it is equally as delusional as the club has been over the last decade over our direction (or complete lack of it, in my opinion).

There's no hiding from how awful we have been and continue to be. I'm not popping open the champagne either after one good half against a fellow battler (right now anyway) in Hawthorn.

It stems back to questionable recruiting (with a couple of gold nuggets along the way), a toxic off-field culture that really does stem back to very late into the Sheedy years into the Knights debacle and then followed with the inglorious supplements saga, the fallout from that supplements saga, a feeling most of the time that 'near enough is good enough' (scraping into the top 8 to inflate opinions) and a playing list right now that would have to rank as having one of the lowest collective IQs to ever play the game. Times have changed since the 1980s (for every club) but a majority of this list are just content enough to be playing AFL football on good coin.

We are easy to play against (and have been for years) and have a distinct lack of onfield leadership.

It doesn't help either when a significant percentage (but not all) of our supporter base have delusions of grandeur about this club based on what we did 20-30 years ago. They expect to win every week when this list is absolutely nowhere near it.

There's no magic wand solution to our problems and we might begin to see a change in fortunes when the club makes some gutsy calls and clears out 3/4 of this list. The only untouchables over the next couple of years, in my opinion, should be Andrew McGrath, Darcy Parish, Devon Smith, Zac Merrett, Dylan Shiel, Jordan Ridley, Jake Stringer, Sam Draper, Adam Saad & Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti - everybody else though is well and truly up for debate on their future. I'd like to add Joe Daniher to that list but my feel is that he will still request a trade at the end of this year again and I'd rather get some sort of compensation and move on from a player who doesn't want to play for the red & black. The other players I have listed could and should play a part in our medium to long term future. The rest will have no impact, sadly for some of them.

Pfft. This isn't a record the club should care about

The one they should have plastered everywhere is that if we don't win the flag this year, we're officially in our longest run without a flag.
Id like that on a clock that ticks until they win one

5838 days without a final. who cares
But i'd really like to avoid the experience of getting to 3 decades without a flag.
We will beat you to it 🙏🏿
