Essendon have just set an new AFL era record

6,090 days.

They'll hit the 7,000 mark on 4th November, 2023 if they don't win a final before then. They'll need to win a final before the end of the 2031 season to avoid reaching the 10,000.

The ignominy of 1,000,000 is fast approaching for the end of the 4742 season. They'd better get cracking.

The point of the thread is Essendon's benchmark setting streak. At 2-6 this year looks gone already. With 6000 in the rear view mirror can they push for 7000?

You're hilarious. Ever thought about doing stand up?

It’s low hanging fruit so to speak (to troll them) over it, but I don’t seem to see many Bombers fans all that bothered by likely missing the finals this year. They have been pretty good so far, had a tough start fixture wise and unlucky not to have picked up a couple of extra wins. Some really exciting young talent and looks like a pretty switched on coaching panel. They finally might be on the right track again 👍

the record means nothing as well, except for oppo posters to get excited over it.
Last record holder was Richmond. They've won 3 of the last 4 GF's after breaking the streak.

There is no cupboard space for finals win.

All you can ask for outside flags is enjoying watching your team each week. we're chalk and cheese from the last decade or two at the moment.

Pfft it’ll never get to 1,000,000 - I’m hearing a lot of amazing things about Hirdatron 3000 and Lloydimus Prime - those guys are going to be champions!

In a way I'm glad we're 2-6 rather than 4-4 which considering the 3 narrow losses isn't that far fetched. Any talk of making finals is done and we won't be there when as a team we clearly aren't ready yet.

The change in our regular personal this season has been quite dramatic and in a good way. The younger players with up to 5 or 6 seasons under their belts like Parish, Langford, Francis, Laverde, McGrath have finally been allowed to settle in the team and play a more prominent role (McGrath maybe an exception to that group, he's never been dropped unlike the others who have been dropped or played out of position on a regular basis).

Seeing Rutten stick with Cox, Jones and Perkins for an extended period has been a positive as well. Worsfold would have more than likely given them 2 or 3 games each, in and out of the team and not given any continuity. Reid was also given a brief taste but probably wasn't quite ready but that's okay, some players take longer. I'm sure he'll get games later in the season.

We also recruited Wright and Hind from other clubs both have played every game. Hind has been really good, Wright has been more good than bad but I have no doubt Worsfold would've dropped him a couple of times already. Caldwell is another who would've played plenty of footy if not for injury, hopefully he's good to go for the second half of the season.

We have Draper to come back soon and Shiel as well late in the season. We'll finish somewhere around 8 or 9 wins which considering the turnover in players will be a really good result. Ambrose, Zaharakis and more than likely Hooker will retire at this year's end, Hurley next year so there is also a lot of money available in the cap in coming seasons.

Despite the 2-6 scoreline most Essendon supporters are happy with where we're at considering the turnover of players in the team. Our 2 poor performances have been against Port and Brisbane on their own grounds, both are going to beat good teams by 8-10 goals let alone young developing teams. Not sure how many days without a finals win it will end up but hopefully we're contenders from about 24-25 onwards.

So as an Essendon fan, you've come to accept losing? The kids are promising and maybe one day you'll climb the ladder and play finals?

Reminds me of the way fans of the minnow clubs used to talk in the midst of another losing season.

Sounds like how the supporters of the least successful clubs used to talk in the midst of another losing season.
we are being quite groundbreaking
Drafting, playing draft picks, losing games as they develop and continuing to draft & recruit

No club's ever won a flag doing it, but it might be worth a try.

Draper is average

You should know very well how Hawthorn started their recent era of success. Clarkson played the kids in year 1, got games into them for the future. You know, Franklin, Roughead and Lewis. Worked pretty well I reckon, got me stuffed why he doesn't want to do it anymore.

Secondly I'm not going to go around making big predictions, no way any Hawthorn supporter dreamt of a flag was possible in 08 during the 05 season. Could come quickly for us too, might all go to crap for all sorts of reasons as well.

Yeah, I agree with this. Jake Stringer, Devon Smith, James Stewart, Andrew Phillips, Will Snelling, Nick Hind and Peter Wright (plus Shiel and Caldwell) have all been good draft selections.

we drafted Snelling

but great post otherwise.

Yep, good call. The Hawks only had 10 guys in last week's team who were aged 22 or under (compared to the Baby Bombers with 7 today.). Six of them with less than 20 games experience compared to Essendon's 4. Excellent knowledge of football outside of your Baby Bombers bubble. :thumbsu:

Sounds to me like you are dreaming...
