Prototype was a letdown for me HBK. You?

The whole world was open but generic and there wasn't much to do except button bash your way through it. The graphics were poor too.

The story look like it tried to do a little bit too much. I'm all for video games trying to break out of the traditional good vs evil mould but Prototype tried to be a bit too artistic, so to speak, in its storytelling.

I had much more fun with it than Far Cry 2 though.
You can take a look in the Prototype thread of me bashing it a fair bit.

TBH I've barely played the game mainly because I'd rather play anything else and inFAMOUS was something I put a lot more time in over it too as it is certainly the far better game overall in polish and just great gameplay and story. Will have to try and give it some good time soon though.

I can probably see Far Cry 2 being a better game. I do wish I gave Far Cry 2 more of a go now as when I think about it the (MAIN) missions were really quite fun and it was just everything in between that really started to grate to the stage that you'd just give up and want to play something that moved a lot quicker in story, missions and overall structure. Far Cry 2 is a game you tend to need to be dedicated to, to really finish it.

I'm all for the bash and crash, take no prisoners and kill everything in your way style of Prototype. But I also LOVE games where you have to think and change your style on the fly too, probably why I would see Far Cry 2 with the potential to improve more on another play through as opposed to Prototype.

You don't want to finish it. Trust me. The crapness of the ending (magnified by the sheer volume of repetitive **** you have to wade through to get there) encourages homocidal impulses.

It really was handy for the guy that whenever he was shot and needed to tweaser the bullet out, it was always in the same place.

I too have stopped playing the game. I pretty much gave up on it in January when that save-game glitch cropped up.

Yeah that ****ing thing. Got me at 90 odd percent when i'd just escaped from prison. Should go back to it and finish it now if its fixed.

Edit: oh, maybe not

Unfortunately, this patch won’t help anyone out who has already suffered the bug. What does this mean? Basically, if your save game is corrupted, you’re out of luck but if you start a new one you don’t have to worry about your save game getting corrupted a second time.

I normally get a little annoyed when people say "this is the worst ____ ever" because there is nearly always something worse. I could say "this is the worst game ever" but surely, there have been some horrible games made by small companies (like Big Rigs) that are worse.

I'll change my statement to: "This is the worse game that I've ever played that's been made by a big company with solid resources."

It is atrocious. Even Assassin's Creed, a horrible game in itself, was better.

- clumsy combat
- repetitive missions
- terrible, rushed voice acting (see Krusty in the recording studio in the Lisa Lionheart Simpsons episode)
- fiddly menus
- uninteresting storyline (if I hear anyone say "disinteresting", I'll simply scream)

The only good things are the graphics and the cool - yet not overly useful - fire effect.

Lol, so true.

The whole game just seems rushed. It's such a 'could have been' game. The whole faction alliances were meant to be in there, but obviously got put in the too hard basket and released without it. The NPC's are boring and useless. You just feel too 'alone' in the game. And whilst 'sandbox', it's still very linear and restricted in a way.

If this game had an SDK given out and turned to the modding community and awesome game could be made from it's ashes. Lets hope Ubisoft release an SDK and something positive comes from it. So much potential.

I'll buck the general trend and say I loved it. Maybe it's just because it's the first game I got with my 360 but it remains my favourite - the atmosphere just feels right. Only game that's given me the same level of enjoyment and replayablity is SR2.

Having said that there's plenty of things wrong with it; there's certainly a rushed feel, and you get the feeling that at some point a focus group was brought in by studio execs to make it more marketable (which would explain the ending). The gimmicks which give flavour initially, like malaria and your guns jamming, become progressively less relevant/more annoying as you get into the game. There's some opportunities missed - no lions to shoot, can't change the radio station despite its importance in the story, hang gliders serving no apparent function - and some redundant weapons (hands up who used the FAL Paratrooper? Yeah didn't think so). The gameplay is perfectly set up for stealth but actual stealth combat is simply too hard. The last 10% of the game is appalling save for one scene - not only does the ending totally sell out the morals of the game and the character of the Jackal, the entirety of the gameplay amounts to a corridor shooter. All the funs bits and all the stuff you've accomplished amounts to nought.

But **** me if most of the criticisms leveled at it aren't the perfect examples of everything wrong with gaming today. It's hilariously ironic that when you create a game that isn't a generic corridor shooter they complain that missions are repetitive. **** me dead! Even in awesome shooters like Gears combat amounts to cover - pop up - headshot - cover - repeat. I enjoy it but complaining FC2 is clumsy/repetitive/boring/frustrating because it doesn't hold your hand is absurd. Yeah, the mini-missions amount to the same objective given x number of times but you've got the freedom to do them however you want to. You can nail the arms convoy with an IED or go long with a Carl G or get in close with grenades; you can assassinate Mr Shady Bloke with a sniper rifle or sneak in close and use the MP-5.

And God forbid the story try and introduce some moral complexity. The factions look identical because they are identical. You're in the middle of an African civil war in which both sides are fighting purely for power; there is no appreciable difference in the politics of either side. Clearly that's too complex though, we need another story about Space Marines saving the world!

I'd agree with your sentiment, but in the end, there was no moral complexity. There was sposed to be a factional alliance and modified game responses depending on what choices you made, but in the end all this was removed and it became a simple run and gun game.

Yes you could approach each situation from a variety of ways, but in the end it was no different to the first Far Cry, or Operation Flashpoint or any of the other non-linear shooters. And at least the original Far Cry had a decent storyline and some varied mission locations.

Look, it wasn't a bad game by a long shot, there were MANY good things about it, but as I said, if the developers release an SDK, the modding community could fix everything and make the game what it SHOULD have been.

It had huge potential, but was obviously flawed.

I loved this game too, my only issue with it was that on the second last mission it ****ed up and it just wouldn't load the next mission.....****shitcrap!

but yeah awesome game..makes me miss 2008, all the games this year have been shit in comparison imo

Agreed.

I haven't bought a 2009 game this year, but that will all change with MW2 in November.

You didn't buy Killzone 2?

You're not gonna buy Uncharted 2?

Ahh, I knew I was forgetting one game.

I will probably buy Uncharted 2 down the track.

I have uni exams and shit to study for for the next few weeks/months and when i'm finished, MW2 will already be out.

I might flog that for a few months, get U2 and play that until GT5.

I don't see that as moral complexity. Games where one choice = you good and another game = you bad are not morally complex. You might not have had to make choices in FC2 but the game was morally complex. You fight for factions that have lost any sense of morality (as demonstrated by one leader's tortured justifications for blowing up the malaria-medicine kilns) whilst trying to kill the guy who allegedly started it all and simultaneously helping civilians.

We must be remembering a different Far Cry. I still remember running through plenty of corridors no matter the pretty scenery that surrounded them.

And at least the original Far Cry had a decent storyline and some varied mission locations.
I'm not saying being generic Super Soldier X fighting his way through Bond Villian Lair Y wasn't fun...but it was hardly stimulating, either. FC2 storyline > all other shooters I've played on 360.

It certainly had flaws, but IMO most of the criticism put down against it is rubbish that demonstrates why we just keep getting Halo clones released. *shrug* I just hope Ubi persists with the concept.

Did my nut with this game after my saves corrupted at 90%.

Found it in the bargain bin last week for 30 bucks and bought it again. Took 2 years for the pain to subside haha

I'm bloody loving it! Has its issues with AI and stuff, and the outposts get annoying. Such a fun game tho, attacking missions different ways with almost 100% freedom is rad
