Don't you think that it is odd that the Father-Son bidding of players is done before the draft order is finalized, ie. at the end of the trade period.

Take for example Darcy Moore, Western Bulldogs said that they would use their first round pick on him, which was lower than ours, hence we had to use our fist pick. But now, The Doggies don't even have that pick at their disposal.

Theoretically we should have only had to use our second round pick (in this scenario, I'm not sure who else bidded for Moore)

Personally I think that the pre selection of Father-Son eligible players should be done once the draft order is set, that way we know for certain, that if a team bids with a certain pick, they will be held accountable to using that selection for that reason.

Am I crazy, or am I missing something here?

Well if they do bid they are obliged to take that player, just as we are obliged to take Moore now.
That's fair enough, but I still think it should be done when the order is settled.

I understand the current process, but I just dont think that it is fair.

Other teams forced us to use a earlier pick, but they on traded those barriers, we should now be allowed to drop back to our second round pick.

It's all about paying a 'fair' price for the father-son you're getting. Basically the reason why the rule is in place is to stop us from trading away all our top round picks and getting Moore with a pick in the sixties.

If we passed on Moore then the Dogs would have been committed to use their pick 6 on him.
Therefore they could trade it to GWS for Boyd.
If the F/S sun bidding was done after the trade period, then wouldn't we have to use pick 5 on him? If any club from 1 to 4 bid on him?
Getting the F/S bidding out of the way first, allows clubs to have a crack at them & then move into full trade mode once they know the results of the bidding.
I think the current system is working ok.

Ah! You've answered it. I didnt think of it from that standpoint, of picks that can be traded away!

Jeez I feel dumb now, hahaha:oops:

Good point. Nailed it.

I wish it was the old 2nd or 3rd rounder rule.

The old man played 100+ games for us, so we should have the privilege of using a late pick. (I feel the same for each club).

Theres no advantages with f&s picks now, except if you have multiple nominations.

Hope Pendles has quintuplets that are naturally elite and fks the entire system.

I do like the current approach. If it was around when Tomahawk was getting drafted, Geelong would've had to pay market price as most clubs would've taken him as a first rounder. The best people to determine fair price are competitors (is this sounding like a microeconomics lecture?). For instance, no one rated Shane Clayton's kid so people were happy for Brisbane to pick him up with the last pick

They could not trade a Father/Son Pick when they Commit to it

Knowing our luck the quintuplets would all be girls

The rule would be a lot better if they got rid of the Academy drafting for clubs that have been established for over 10 years....

Here we are relying on Pendlebury to have quintuplets and all they have to do is rely on a few million people to have five good kids a generation.

No advantage to the modern F/S picks?

Bulldogs and Essendon might disagree with you there.

The system is a lot more fair while still allowing for the romance and clubs to get bargains, it's much better than Ablett for pick 40.

The current system holds them accountable to use the pick (if successful) on the father son candidate and therefore won't be available for trading.
