If there is one great thing about living in the US, it is the extraordinary amount of craft beers you can find. A fairly local brewery, Terrapin (based in Athens, GA, an awesome city and the home of the University of Georgia) has been churning out interesting beers lately.

Last night I tried their most recent beer - they've named it Hopzilla, its a Double IPA and rang in at 110 IBUs. Interestingly, though, it didn't have the rancid bitterness I sometimes find with very hoppy IPAs. It was actually very drinkable. Probably not a good thing since it is 10.8% ABV.

Also tried a couple of Norwegian IPAs, bit of a different flavour, milder and a little sweeter than many American IPAs. Well worth a try - one of them is from a brewery going by Haandbrygerriet. Don't know if it's available down there.

Did anyone go the Vic Microbreweries Showcase @ Fed Square last Wednesday/Thursday?

Stuff like this shows you don't need to import to acquire good beer, nor do you need to be satisfied with the swill from the bigs (CUB/Kirin-Lion Nathan).
 
Picked up a cheap 6 pack of Sapporo today, I don't remember trying it in the past. It's pretty decent for what it is. It has that Asian-lager flavour, but with a bit more body than most. Reminds me a lot of Tiger.

That's an oxymoron right there.

And as a beer snob from way back, let me tell you, you have absolutely no taste in beer whatsoever. It's not even just that they are all boring as bat shit beers, they are all craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap. I will admit though, I bag Hoegaarden mainly because I hate wheat beers in general.

I suppose when you go out for dinner or a party and need a bottle of wine it's Rosemount or Wolf Blass Yellow Label for you? :D
 
I agree with the James Squire call. Very good beers.

They opened a pub over here in Perth recently and had a couple of good nights there.

The last time I went, they had run out of Porter which is my favourite of their beers.

I am going to try Monk's porter. They are a micro brewery which is in the middle of Fremantle and I heard that their Porter is very good.

Brass Monkey Stout from The Sail and Anchor is still a great beer as is Dogbolter.

I had plans to go and buy a lot of mixed boutique beers to enjoy over the Christmas break and try a whole heap of different ones out, but my wife lost her job yesterday (teaches foreign students) so that may be on hold !

Sorry to hear about your wifes job Jim, but probably as good a reason as any to get on the grog IMO.
 
Coopers Green is a very underrated beer. I like particularly like James Squire and Little Creatures when I'm prepared to spend a little more, and I enjoy visiting microbreweries and trying different types.

That said, I am not really much of a beer aficionado. If I am somewhere with tap it is my beverage of choice, otherwise 90% of the time I'm drinking wine or spirits.
 
Had one of those Rogers' Beers (an amber ale) down at the Little Creatures Eating Hall (or whatever it's called) on Brunswick St, when we were down for the GF's. Very nice, although seems like bit less flavour than the Squires Amber, and a good vibe in the joint. Will visit again.

Anyone tried the Abbey Ale that Malt Shovel (people who make Squires) have been producing? :thumbsu:?:thumbsdown:?
 
I had it when I was actually at the New Norcia monastery in WA, I enjoyed it a heck of a lot. It's won various international awards, I believe.

It's weird, even though it's ostensibly the monks' ale, it's brewed in Sydney and I couldn't find it in any Perth bottle shops. It's far more readily available on the east coast.

Rogers is actually a lower strength beer, but it is my favourite of the Little Creatures beers of which I am not a big fan otherwise.

The pub further down Brunswick St on the other side of the road. Is it the Provincial??? I really like that pub. Excellent service and a good variety of beers on tap. The bar staff are always friendly and will go out of their way to make sure you have a pleasant time.

More like spending a week off in Perth and running short of tourism options. :p

They have a particularly fine collection of Italian and Spanish Renaissance and post-Renaissance art, including a Titian and a Raphael.

Ouch !

It is a beautiful spot at the monastery. Have not been for years.
 
I would like to go back sometime when it's cooler and see more of the place. I was there in summer when it was about 45 degrees - I basically looked around the art gallery, had lunch at the pub and left.
