Over a couple of Sherbets last night, my mates and i started to reminisce about finals were surprise selections were made and had an impact, here are some i remembered, does anyone have any that comes to mind

1/ Dermott Brereton signalling his arrival as an AFL superstar with 5 goals in his first game in a final

2/ A young Aaron Lord a late replacement against Carlton in a final, with Bairstow and Hocking out injured ran rings around the Blues midfield

3/ Greg Madigan getting a game on the bench in the 1989 blockbuster against Geelong, found himself on the field more than the Hawk heirarchy would have wanted due to alot of injuries. Acquitted himsel well on the bacline, but unfortunately never really made it

4/ Michael Cooke kicking 5 goals in his first match with the Hawks in a semi, held goalless in the GF against North in '77 i think then never seen again

These were just some we talked about, Collingwood hada a reputation in the '70s to pluck youngsters out in the finals, Len Thompson i believe made his debut in a final. Can anyone confirm this?

Paul Couch was also missing from that game.

What ever happened to FABIO [Aaron Lord].He went to Hawthorn and hasn't been heard of for ages.

I'll take it that your not being sarcastic Jubster, Aaron missed most of last season through injury, he has trimmed down on his muscle bulk which he believes may have been some of the cause of his injury woes and is hoping to play a more midfield role this season. I think trimming down might help him with his mobility. He has been pretty successful with the Hawks prior to last season, and has been more than useful out of a pocket, just tries to do to much when in possession some times. Oh and he has split with his Miss Australia girlfriend!

Saw an article on Teddy Hopkins this morning, hes another we could add to this list, although i think he played a few games prior to the GF, i dont think he was heard of afterwards, besides another Grand Final Collingwood supporters have nightmares about has to be mentioned. His four goals after half time to bring Carlton back into the game is stuff legends are made of. Interesting article if anyone read it debunking the theory that the game was the beginning of the handball craze, although Barrass did tell them to go for it at half time, the handballs recorded in the third quarter were six, hardly revolutionary stuff. Cheers

Now THAT's a name I haven't heard in a while.
Greg Madigan should be added to the Dud Recuits for the Dockers.

Hey Jub Jub, I'll think you'll find that Michael Mansfield was also out of that game and Tim McGrath played after missing only one week with a shoulder injury.

Add to that, the match was famous because it was Ablett's first game as captain and Parkin did the wise thing of putting Mil Hanna on to him while Silvagni took Mensch - who by the way kicked 4.
