I know this may seem unlikely in modern football but I feel there could be the chance for a remarkable return to the club following his 5 year commitment at the GC.

My reasoning is this:
In 5 years our young guns, menzel, t hunt, christensen, mitch brown, motlop etc will be in peak form. hawkins, selwood, drum and possibly simpson could be our spine and still only 26-27 not to mention the 2 first-round draft picks we'll be adding in the coming years. Effectively the timing will be spot on for geelong.

Gary will be 31 going on 32 in 2016 and no doubt seeking the obligatory 1-2 year contract. Understandably the GC's first round draft picks will be nearing their prime and Gary may try to hold on for a year or two. However the sentimental value of returning to his old club to ply his trade in the forward pocket for his final years may lure him back. A chance at redemption?

I want to know what people's thoughts are on the possibility - a. how likely and b. how would you react? i know i'd love it!

I think by now everyone gets that Gary isn't sentimental.

It's not without precedent, as Graeme Landy and Aaron Lord each went from Geelong->elsewhere->Geelong, but those players also didn't leave as the best player in the competition for more money. Mind you, for whatever money Geelong was paying in about 1980 or so for Landy i think anything might have been better!!

He may play for us again, because by then, Gold Coast Suns will be too bankrupt to pay his contract. LOL!

How are you feeling Hendo. A bit flat. Im not sure if you were just optimistic or dumb but I certainly wish you had of been right.

Anyway. Why would Gary come back? He has made his bed , any second comings can be done in the new bed of his as far as Im concerned. Let him get busy. Its no use looking backwards. He is gone. If and when he comes back Id hope its because he has a son or two that want a game in the Hoops.

I agree this is the more likely case. Does anyone know if Gary plays 100+ games at the GC which he will, who would get first rights to any gary offspring? Us or the GC?

Forget Ablett. Varcoe is much the same age as Ablett was when Ablett got promoted to the key midfielder position. I hope they give him that key role. Personally, I think he is a better prospect than Ablett was.

the second coming is already on the Geelong list.

his name is Allen Christiensen.. He has that x factor and un-predictability about him (prob cause we havent seen alot of him) but expect big things. He will be huge..

Gary who?

If he plays 100 games with them which is still 6 years of football away its probable but nothing is guaranteed (ask Matty Egan), it would mean his boys would qualify for either club. Just like the Danihers and several others. eg. Leigh Colbert's offspring would qualify for us and North. It would be purely up to them agree to which club they wish to play for.

No, why would we want him back? He'll just clog up our list at that stage when we could be developing a young player. Geelong and Ablett have done enough for eachother, I don't think the club owe him anything anymore.

Ablett will be a spent force in 5 years. He will be carrying GC on his own and will cop poundings every week.

Maybe they will hand him a Brownlow by then like they did Juddy.

2014 Brownlow Night:

Andrew Demetriou: "Round 20 Geelong v Gold Coast. M. Brown, One vote. T. Varcoe, 2 votes. G................Ablett, 3 votes!

Commentator: "Surprising to see Gary get the three, as Geelong won that game by 157 points. And Gary didn't play that game as I recall. Looks like Gary's Brownlow this year."

This.

Harder grounds, more hits, heavier tags, no support, moron Qlderrrrs.

Your choice Garry Who.

He wants the Brownlow vote grabbing midfield position, so I guess you will be right.

Guy McKenna came out and said Gazza will not be playing up forward. He said he will definitely be playing in the key midfield position. Which is what Gazza wanted. To make that call minutes after the announcement shows what a weak coach McKenna will be. The tail wags the dog. It sounded like he was saying "I'm giving Gary what he demands and thats one of the reasons he left."

Odd things McKenna has said about all this. Wouldn't be surprised if Pickering is telling him to shutup right now.

Didn't read it that way myself , it was more like "Midfield is the position for the big dogs , we have you and 12 puppies so have no doubt you will be playing in the middle".
I'd say he has a very good chance of a Judd medal in 3 or 4 years if he is still going strong. The bunch of talented kids will just be starting to kick in around 2013 , as we know a winning side gets more votes (usually)

I have to agree. Varcoe improved exponentially this year and at times played better than Ablett in the same sort of role. If the trend continues we'll have ourselves a big winner. :thumbsu:
