I can't think of any loss worse than 2008, but after some reflection I think some on this forum may need to realise the following:

One group of players has won a premiership (3) for this club in the last 57 years. That team was built by Thompson from the ground up - that dreaded word - rebuild!.

The legacy of that team was Selwood, Hawkins and to a lesser extent Harry Taylor, a midfield leader, a foward line leader and a defence leader - there was an opportunity to rebuild a new team from the ashes of the old, if that had happenned that team would be in their 3 year peak now.

Instead the club decided on plugging holes in a leaking dam wall with their fingers, obtaining cast-offs from other clubs to fill voids for that decade long - one last shot, and it has failed. The development of young talent has been foresaken to a large extent to keep us contending, in other words they lost sight of what ended the drought in the first place.

What makes us so special (I would call it arrogant) to say that "Geelong do not rebuild"?, similar things were said about Sydney a few years back and where are they now? Our best players Saturday night were our 20 somethings not our 30 somethings, we just didn't have enough of them.

Chris Scott and his team may be able to build a regimented game plan, they may be able to pull off a premiership if we don't come up against a dynasty team like Richmond and if everything goes right and the weather is perfect but it's clear they lack long term vision, either through their own hubris or just plain inability.

Jeremy Cameron is not the answer, neither is Sean Higgins and neither was crouch, or jenkins, or Steven, or Dalhous, or Rohan, or Henderson, or Touhy, or Stanley, or Rivers or even P Dangerfield. Dynasties are drafted - not traded. I fear Chris Scott's legacy at our club will be a losing finals record and a decimated list by the time he leaves - not unlike Gary Ayers.

It's time the club dared to dream for that dynasty again - contending be damned!.
A fair chunk of that 07 team arrived before Bomber, and important chunk too, so built from the ground up isn’t quite correct is it.

Post of the year. Could not agree more.

But this vision has been deliberately and completely forgotten. And didn't you hear? Free agency has changed the landscape!

If only some of us had mentioned this six or seven years ago.

Not quite, it was only four players:

- King (drafted in 1994, had played 46 games before Thompson arrived)
- Milburn (drafted in 1995, had played 25 games)
- Scarlett (drafted in 1997, had played 6 games)
- Harley (drafted in 1998, had played 9 games)

Built from the ground up is actually pretty close.

Yeah and they demolished a few fantasies that had been clung to as well:

- Can’t win away from the MCG. Yeah they can.
- Couldn't win a final interstate. The Port prelim especially proved that wrong. They did it last year too, but fans proved remarkably good at forgetting that.
- Couldn't cover injuries. They lost one of their ruckmen right before the finals, and lost probably their second best defender minutes into the Grand final and were a man down.

It's amazing how so many Geelong supporters seem mortally offended by Richmond's success, when they clearly copied a lot of things we did. Even down to getting Neil Balme. Doesn't diminish our achievements one iota, it just shows certain things - stable administration, good coach who focuses on coaching, developing a team through patient rebuilding, having someone take non-essential stuff off the coach - works. It did for us. It has for them.

Maybe there's something to it.
Maybe cats fans want our 07-11 team to be the greatest ever and feel threatened. Maybe it’s the Tigers fans that get under supporters skins. I don’t know.
But you cannot look past what an amazing team they are despite how much you don’t like them.

Richmond had more traded in players on their list than we did...
Hawks won 3 flags on the back of traded in players....
It's not 2000 anymore FFS, may as well go on about zoning again if you keep looking that far back.

so I assume you are referring to Corey, Chapman and Ling mainly? - who developed and played those players? I'm not saying this is a Thompson Vs Scott argument, I'm simply pointing to the fact trade hasn't worked for us and drafting and devlopment did.

Should tell Mooney, Harley and Ottens that then.
EVERY successful team has relied upon traded in players, none more so than every Premier of the last 10 years.

Yelling out "go to the draft!" or "play the kids!" is akin to "no plan B!" and "just kick it!".

In real life the hard way and the right way are nearly always the same thing.
95% of the time? 99% of the time?
Not sure what makes footy different.

But in the true spirit of the Big footy Geelong board I'm going to argue with you anyway to get likes even though deep down I feel exactly the same.

So here goes:
Carlton! You just want us to be Carlton.
You want us to be shit forever!
(Don't worry about Judd, Daisy, McLean and the many others that set them back. And only now FINALLY after doing things properly they look ok)
Just don't worry about that ok.

What about the new grandstand! And the money! We'll go broke.
(Who gives a f**k. And no we won't)

you're entitled to your opinion, but you literally just picked out 3 names, you must know the core of dynastly teams are drafted, whether that be hawthorn, richmond or geelong.

I'm stating what i believe, what has worked for us in the past but this year we have fielded (regularly) the oldest, most experience team and when the whips are cracking we don't have what it takes, what are you hoping for? - that we can get through a finals series without meeting the benchmark of the competition?

So you know for certain this would have happened? Amazing clairvoyant powers!

They could also have been like St Kilda, Melbourne, Carlton and even Richmond for many years - stuck on eternal rebuilding.

St Kilda are now on their third coach since Lyon and have had their first good year since 2011.

My personal view is from the blue and white world, a lot of Geelong fans grew up used to annihilating Richmond on a regular basis and don't like that the bullied have become the bullies. Happens to every team. Happened with us ten years before. They seem genuinely shocked that a group of supporters we relentlessly mocked for decades (right up until September 2017, you can even check on here) might turn around and start giving it back.

There have been two moments in the last decade where to me this board has started losing its collective mind. The 2013 Qualifying final when the cult of Scott really started taking hold, and the 2017 Qualifying final where it took full root. This board has become rapidly more paranoid and pathetically insecure ever since.

You have been riding this line for so long you can only see your own bias.
Whatever, you'll continue to be a sad sad person because EVERYONE in the AFL disagrees completely with you, especially the Cats.

No they didn't. They won it off the back of Hodge, Mitchell, Buddy, Roughead, Lewis, Cyril, Ellis, Birchall etc
Getting 3 of those in one draft is really what built them.
Brian Lake etc helped them when they were already f**king good.

Everyone disagrees with me? - righto. I didn't know you spoke for everyone.

Anychance you can discuss the topic without the personal insults?

Prior to trading in players from other clubs their previous 4 seasons were - Lost GF, lost Prelim, lost EF, didn't make finals.
Where were they "****ing good" before they started trading in players?
Was the core there? Yup, but it needed to be finished off with trades.
You know who has hit the draft consistently the last decade and a half? Blues... Demons....

2 days later and all i can say this is the worse grand final loss since the 90s.

this is way worse then 2008. In 2008 we had already won a flag and it was seen as hiccup with the club clearly having more grand finals in its future.

this current team is done. This was our shot. hawkins is 33. Ablett and taylor are gone. Selwood is 33. Dangerfield is 31 and clearly on the decline. Even the likes of duncan, stanley and blicavs are now hitting 30 and will start to decline. And virtually none of the kids are coming through and the ones that are look like B graders not A graders you can build a team around.

the other thing that hurts is effing richmond now have a 3 flag era further devaluing the 2007-11 cats team Achievements.

this hurts big time. Think im going to need to take a day off work.

2008 was far worse IMO, it’s one we should’ve won, we should’ve gone back to back. Our dynasty ended after the 2011 flag, ever since then we’ve been rebuilding, and building towards winning another one, our list isn’t formed to create a dynasty, Richmonds is, this is their dynasty, we had a chance to pinch one on the weekend, fell short, but at least it was to a team that has pretty much taken all before them the previous 2-3 years, not like the Hawks who stole one in 2008 before peaking again around 2012/13.

If it were just Carlton, that would be one thing, but it's not just Carlton. There are plenty of other examples, as I've mentioned in my other post.

Maybe, just maybe, it would have worked. But if it hadn't, would all these people asking for a rebuild have been whingeing about being near the bottom for 10 years? I wonder.

Have mentioned before that our ‘close but no cigar’ seasons of last 9 years or so have seduced the club into believing the myth of always being in contention. Maybe our ability to drag ourselves into finals over that long period has caused more harm than good. This year is no different. Probably worse, as we made a grand final. We almost tasted the carrot.
Hindsight is 20 /20 vision and, as others have pointed out, rebuilding these days is a fraught process.
Scott and co will stay, but I can’t see him at this stage of his career presiding over a drastic rebuild or game plan reboot. (We might be surprised, but I doubt it)
Club admin are the same.
They are just looking at financials and have a morbid fear of a couple of seasons down the lower rungs of the ladder and the perceived effects on the bottom line, which insults the intelligence of supporters.
The result will be a bit of backslapping, some tweaking, wallpapering and off chasing the mirage for another season..
Port’s motto is ’We exist to win premierships’
Ours should be ‘We exist to be there or therabouts’

you called me a "sad sad person", I couldn't care less if you disagree with me. You didn't like what I posted so you chose to attempt to insult me, I don't call that being precious, I call that being mature.

Perhaps read the context just a little better, I clearly said you'll continue to be a sad sad person because they disagree with you aswell.
The Cats, and the rest of the competition in general, will continue doing what they want to do which you so vehemently oppose.

Nope - but it worked before.
