One thing we learnt is Dusty is way better than Danger.. He always stands up in big games and play the game and doesn't look for the cameras. Richmond play as a team and all players contribute, we have too many players that go missing.
One positive is we won the sprint....

You should be proud of your team, they fought it out right to the end, and the game was a lot closer that the final score would suggest.

Hi cats fans,

It's my first post on here. Need somewhere to vent.. and I can't sleep. I was lucky unlucky enough to be at the game tonight. Cheered as hard as I could knowing how many true fans couldn't be there. What I saw was a team that played hard but sadly not very smart.

First half I thought we were mostly first to the ball and dominated the territorial battle, but it felt like it was dominating like we could in game plan version 2016. Main idea: locking it in our forward half. Not too much thought on constructing creative meaningful forward entries, just the weight of inside 50s getting it done. Until it doesn't.

Second half when we were challenged, things became reactive. The opportunities weren't ever going to be plentiful, as the tigers are well-drilled. But when we did have them, i.e. to control possession, make them chase the ball, take the more patient build up play option, we passed it up, preferring instead mostly to just kick long down the wing to a contest. It was so hard to watch, as that is exactly what hurt us badly when we played them earlier in the year.

There was actually nothing much that resembled our impressive style of play from other games this season, even when we were on top. There was no lack of effort, just sometimes a bit too much in not always in the right ways. When we needed composure and a more creative avenue, we got more effort, sometimes unrealistic.

Tell me: is this the fate (losing big games) of a team that has much talent, experience, a clever coach, but not the years of playing together that make doing the team thing, sometimes the seemingly riskier thing if it is part of the plan, "second-nature"? That's my fear. A fear that is only exacerbated by the idea of potentially losing a player like Narkle and gaining someone like Cameron for next year. A Cameron would not have solved the error that was Oct 24 2020. A Narkle, like a Simpson, establishing their own role in the team might eventually solve some issues of the future.

By the end of this game - the many small misses, and miscommunications, and hesitations piled up. Teammates looked like they were getting frustrated with one another. Strange things were going on like a Blicavs seemingly having to chase a Pickett around the ground rather than doing his defence thing or his box-to-box thing. I think there would be plenty that could still hold their head high. But it soon dawned on us that what we were watching, irrespective of the individual contest and drama, was the boring old thing called a "Richmond game" as Hardwick likes to name it. In other words: not necessarily a game with Richmond in it, but just a bit of a dog's breakfast. And it appeared as though, in the impatience to reach a goal, to influence things through the directest route, no-one wanted to take responsibility first for stopping the game just looking that way.

Selwood and Scott once used to echo each other of being "impatient" for success. They were talking about the need for the younger brigade and second tier players to lift and develop at faster than the normal pace. Joel has been the most courageous, most determined and willing player I believe to have ever captained this club. If I had to describe him to someone who had never seen him play, I would say simply - from his very first game - (as remarkable as it is) he led from the front. But the impatience that in an 18 year old willed a team that was on the brink of greatness forward in 07, I fear just as quickly creates the destiny, for a younger generation, of forever missing the opportunities. Most of those players have either left or become seasoned veterans but we're still impatient. We can read pages about the premiership Scott of 2011 and the Scott of later years, but it isn't often acknowledged that it is Selwood's tenure as captain that coincides with our period of near misses in finals. He has captained Geelong in his own image and made the team a group of fearsome and truly formidable competitors. Sometimes he carried it on his shoulders. Just not all the way to the premiership.

If anything, cats fans, as hard as it is to accept right now, I think we will need to learn to be patient again before we get to see more success.

Finally, what a privilege to see GAJ in his final game. Irrepressible and all class. And if it is Harry's too, even more so. One of the greats.

I rate Dusty up there with GAJ, his skills and the way he brings the team together leave Danger for dead. Best player in the comp by a fair margin.

As mentioned about 6 hours ago, no qualms from me with result. Tigers are one of the greatest contested/pressure sides, with ladles of underrated talent. Dusty an unbelievable player but not the only X factor for them. Their fitness is also underrated- Geelong’s fitness is huge and yet we looked jaded in the second half.

Game plan - well, bit hard to be harsh as when we were going well in second qtr it served us well, but (predictably) when Tigers had adjusted their structure slightly to make up for Vlostuin and went up a gear, it fell apart. Our second half goals were like aberrations. IMO Tigers started to get on top in last 5 mins of second quarter and they knew it - coming out at half time you could see the energy and confidence- they knew what to do. Once we started turning it over in first 5 mins of 3rd quarter, the momentum shifted was all theirs. Our best style, however, was the running in groups, being bold. Really needed to stick with that in the second half, but couldn’t. Would have been difficult anyway - Tigers won most of the ground contests in second half. I really hope Scott can trend away from the chipping style in 2021 and onwards - rarely wins GFs. Cameron won’t fix that.

Coaching -hard to criticise Scott - has been great in such a difficult year. Really has the back of the players. As mentioned above Not a fan of the game plan but it has been necessary with the limitations of our list and served us brilliantly for 90% of the year. Only other criticism was Kolo on Dusty - sure, easy to say now, but never liked it. Kolo was never going to be agile enough to close down the Dusty moves in forward 30 metres. To be honest, Stewart is probably the only player who could have and it would have taken away our defensive springboard.

Players-

Great game by Stewart. Was BOG to half time IMO.

Duncan, Selwood, Menegola and Guthrie (at least to half time) also very good.

Although IMO Nankervis’s overall influence was better, particularly second half, I think Stanley also performed well.

Amazing effort by Ablett, particularly with the shoulder injury, with some trade mark magic. What a privilege it’s been to watch him play.

Also - big shout out to Meirs. Really fluffed that 25 metres out/directly in front shot in second but overall played well under huge pressure and was possibly our best forward.

Such an important trade/draft period for us. My inclination is not to throw everything at getting a premiership next year at expense of long term. Yes, should definitely get Cameron but beyond that invest in sub 23 YOs. Whatever the targets are - please ensure good footskills and speed.

Overall, another great year by Geelong - really grateful to be able to barrack for this team, particularly in such a dreadful time in recent history.

Agree with all three of these, although mainly #2 on your list as that was the most conspicuous failure tonight imo. So many of them looked like they didn't know what to do when the ball was on the deck in the second half; the amount of times we had players standing off the ball expecting others to do the hard work, and/or tentatively tapping it around in a panicked "oh sh*t wtf do I do" fashion was galling.

Agree, lack of composure when the ball hit the ground. At one stage Blicavs meandered after a ball that had been hastily cleared by Richmond, by the time he got there, bent down fumbling to pick it up, he still had time to handball but instead stood up in a tackle and got pinged for dropping the ball.

We had our chances to put them away in the second qtr, we were wasteful, Miers misses 25 out straight in front, we should have 30+ plus in front, we were too blaze when we were on top. The odd time the ball gets down, dusty turns half a chance into a goal, breathes confidence into the tigers and they fight their way into the contest in the last 4 minutes go into half time break 2 goals down, knowing that when it's their turn on top they'll make us pay.

Dangers 2nd half was shocking, it's a grand final and he's staging for free kicks in marking contests, going to ground too easy, whilst dusty just plays the ball, keeps his feet and give him half chance he kicks the goal. We had no one to go onto him, he's too smart for kolo, maybe we should have tried blix, as he struggled in the midfield, with the tackle pressure.

Loved your post. Agree with your list of Geelong players who performed on the night. Dangerfield was all over the shop and generally ineffective. Martin was the opposite, always composed and every disposal damaging.

Too many missed shots in the first half i think was costly - had you been 5 or 6 up at HT Tigers might have been gone.
Add Cameron and Tomahawk doesn't get doubled or have to deal with a spare - will get more 1 v 1s

Rioli did nothing but fumble half the game. we had our spuds too, its swings and roundabouts....we have a lot of faster players than you do, you have a lot of bigger body players then us.

I said it in the game day thread but I'll say it again here. This was never going to end well after they said on the grand final brunch that Geelong had a venue booked for a party from midnight to 7am tonight. I mean really that is just arrogance

Nothing to do with the players or coach. There was more than 100 people in the club contingent, players' families, coaches, staff. etc of course they booked a venue for a party, as did Richmond and any other club in almost any league, arranges a post GF party.

Still reading my way throught the thread, but want to add something before I hit the sack...

Firstly, the better team won. Richmond are simply better than us, and boast one of the most damaging players the competition has ever seen. A guy who regularly pulls out his absolute best when his team needs it most. Talk about impact. Somebody mentioned "once in a generation", but Martin is once in about three generations.

Secondly, we were absolutely in this game. We started well. Handled the nerves. Got our game going, and got a significant lead. When the score was 35-13, I was thinking "this is ours to lose". Unfortunately, we then went ahead with the "losing" part.

Had we won it, I think many of us would have agreed that, despite all the criticism, the club and coach are absolutely doing the right things.
Given that we got to a GF, and played our way to a good lead before being run down by an excellent team, I don't think I can reasonably turn around and say that the club/coach got it all wrong. It's a matter of fine margins.

Let's hope we can climb the mountan again next year, and this time, get the better of the troll that lives at the bloody top.
