Was it a mental surrender or were they cooked? Was a warm and very humid night. All the more reason to put them away in the first 15 mind of the second half. You don't feel tired with a spirit crushing lead
That's the key question
It was mental - a sense of inevitability. I just thought we may have learnt something from the prelim the year before. Yet it played out exactly the same way

Just put someone on him, ruffle his feathers, get physical. He has to be stopped if you want to win, it ain’t rocket science. Why didn’t Danger take it upon himself to go head to head with him? Put himself in the midfield, he wants a flag so bad? Try take dusty out of the game.
Dusty is too good to be tagged by any player we have, and we did try things. Some of the goals he kicked were simply unstoppable and it would not and did not matter who was on him.
Danger as a tagger is a crazy concept. He spent a few times falling and hoping for frees. A really disappointing GF from him. He has a little time left to make another one, but the issue of Dusty v Danger surely has been put to bed now. Dusty reigns supreme. Easily.
And when Danger was on him in that last stuff up by Stanley, Dusty just shrugged off his tackle.
We seemed to use a lot of interchanges before half time, and we ran out of legs in the second half, no doubt. Not sure why, but it appears Tigers were supremely fit as well.
We were fit, but they are on a level above.

The signs began late in the second quarter and became more obvious (to everyone except the coach) as the third quarter went on.

A big bodied contested beast was just what we needed in the middle of the Gabba.

When does the Chris Scott thread open? I feel it's a bit like the Boxing Day sales with a hoarde of folks lined up waiting to rush in once the doors open. 😂

I feel for the mods when the gate to THAT is opened 😯

My other half is a rabid Hawthorn supporter, and the only team she hates more than Geelong is Richmond.

It was a weird experience hearing and seeing her yelling her support for the Cats last night.

But even she said 'Geelong is done' at half time, though she hoped otherwise. She went on to say she couldn't understand how people support the GFC when it so regularly lets you down.

Guess she's seen her team win twice as many flags as us in the same lifetime 😥
The regularly lets you down is a bit rich. We are one of the most sucessful sides of the AFL era

Why was Danger up forward for so long? one of if not the best clearance player in the country barely gets in the midfield until the last quarter.

It was a combination of the belief that Richmond’s game plan makes winning contested ball less valuable and the fact we didn’t have a genuine 2nd forward option.

Both are generally true (we smashed Richmond in the clearances and beat them in contested ball in round 17 despite getting flogged). But you simply can’t get mauled in the centre like he did after half time and have possibly your best clearance player standing in the goal square.

Yes, but the excuse last year was that Hawkins and Duncan would have made the difference.
Why not accept Tigers are the new dynasty team, and at some stage, they will face decline, like we did, but right now, I could see them win the next 2 if they are hungry.

And thats where ive landed
We gave it a crack but Tigers are just too good

That will be a 4 week suspension I think.
Looked bad in normal speed and a lot worse slowed down. Still, had he lowered his elbow, it's a clash of heads.
Pardon the intrusion but I tend to agree with you. I was furious when it happened but having watched several replays from different angles, I'm of the view that Danger's priority in that split second was self protection rather than inflicting damage. He's not that kind of person anyway. He may well get a suspension out of this but, if so, it will be due to circumstance rather than malice. Anyway, commiserations on your loss and perhaps just step back and celebrate all the good things your team achieved in 2020. The battle is over for another year and, like all other 16 Clubs, our two now have to prepare to do it all over again in 2021.

Losing GF's is way more painful than prelims, imho, but on balance, it was still great to make one again. Would love to know why we appeared so spent after half time. We used a lot of energy tickets in that first half, and I would not be surprised if Danger is carrying something that necessitates him playing forward a lot more. Even when in the middle, he was less potent. Maybe next year, he will be based as a HF. Not getting younger. This year, Guthrie, Menegola, Duncan and Parfitt all stepped up, but they will need to take it further. next year. The game is too taxing to rely on Selwood and Danger as our prime mids.

Thanks too. Totally good seeing an amicable supporter. Something says supposedly danger will either get a fine or maybe a week off on principle but basically by rights the afl I don’t think then tends to want to do something about this with their decisions made from the year and also actually is willing to turn a bit of a blind eye to some shit stemming from the grand final. Therefore I think that there’ll be fines for misconduct and shit same with Selwood and that Richmond player being dumb.

Yeah this is pretty much it. We have unfortunately been the 2nd or 3rd best team of the last few years. There is no shame in that.
But it means we walk away with a subpar finals record and no flags.
Our very best can trouble the Tigers but we need to make the most of every chance and last night we didn't quite do that.
We also needed a bit of luck. The weather probably hindered our game style more than theirs.
But that's just the way it goes. Overall we had a bloody good year. The Tigers were just too good in the end.

Commiserations on last night. A Bulldogs perspective on your loss, who has lived in Herne Hill for a very long time. It probably hurts but I wouldn’t know? We’ve only made one GF in my 48 years so be grateful you are often contending. I’d love to make more GF’s even to lose would be better than not being there. I wish our club was admired as much as yours. Not looking at stats Duncan and Guthrie were amazing, Gazza was inspiring and Stewart, Tuoy, O’Conner, Menagola were good too. Danger needs to stop throwing his body around in marking and tackling contests he is getting like Grimes and doing his legacy much harm, all my mates who support all clubs were losing their minds over his staging. Things are close. If Danger had of knocked out Dusty instead of Vlastin you’d be premiers, he was the difference, but I’m not sure he is human? Maori’s must have a huge muscle mass to power ratio. See you next year.

I think there’s two things from this. One they tend to need to put young mids more in the matches like Clarke (who albeit was unfit to play) etc and also actually essentially draft these too then. This takes out danger and Selwood from there as much as they can be used on flanks more unless it is needed and actually also you can completely use Selwood to tag too.

It's pretty simple.
Our system requires 22 players all playing well and making the right decisions, and we can't do it. A lot of players last night lacked composure in big moments, Selwood, Hawkins (multiple), Danger, Blicavs (multiple) Kolo, Stanley etc, whereas the tigers run a system that allows for them not to be at their absolute best and still win, they never lack composure and they have levels of intensity and attack on the ball that it seems nobody else can match, we certainly can't. At times in the second half it reminded me of a pre-season game with our lack of desperation and intensity.
On top of that they have the finals GOAT, and the reason he is the GOAT is he owns the very things that make finals football. Moments. He creates moments that aren't there, and when he gets that chance to take a moment and change the game he nails it every single time, even chances that are barely there (look at his first 3 goals for examples). Compare him to dangerfield and you see why we won't beat them.
It seriously took a freak game from an American to stop them winning 4 in a row..

It's all relative. Trying barracking for Melb or St Kilda.
Or even for younger supporters, North or Essendon.

In 1999 North won their 2nd flag from 3 GFs in 4 years. They made a prelim every year from 1994 to 2000. Now 21 years without a GF (essentially at our 67-89 gap).

In 2000 Essendon completed the most dominant premiership of all time. Haven’t won a flag since, have only won 5 finals and haven’t won a final in the last 16 seasons.

Yep- what I was worried about going into half time wasn’t even the late dusty goal-it was that our players looked spent already. Tom Stewart was bent over looking stuffed, so did the others around him. And I thought how can they look so exhausted when it’s only half time. So that’s when I got a bit nervous. Our best is better than theirs but we can’t keep it up for 4 quarters against Richmond. We can do enough against everyone else. So what is it about Richmond’s game that so taxes the opposition?
Dusty is truly amazing, paddy will, quite rightly, feel disappointed in his game. It’s arguable that we win that game if dusty isn’t playing.
