Re: Geelong Interested In Jesse W Smith

What does the W stand for anyway?!

I'm all for dropping it.

Re: Geelong Interested In Jesse W Smith

Balme said he would only come if he accepted to play for 60k base plus match payments like Drum has. Man we are going to be in massive trouble with the cap this time next year.

Re: Geelong Interested In Jesse W Smith

The problem is nobody really knows. And of late it's been his hamstrings that have been of concern, because of his ankle. We're unhappy because we know what he's like when fit, but that's the question, will he ever get right. It's definitely a gamble. If it pays off Geelong will be the winners of trade week by a country mile, that I can assure you. But he just screams Paul Lynch - supremely talented footballer who's body never allowed him to show it enough. As of yet it's all speculation anyway.

Might be off to Germany for the old rooster's combs or whatever it is then :D

(and in the meantime we get to promote a rookie anyway which ain't all together a bad thing)

Interesting to see what happens tomorrow
I'll be on the trade tracker!

Re: Geelong Interested In Jesse W Smith

Exactly. I have nothing against Smith but the OP's question is laughable.

Agreed...given Smith's injury history, a Wojo swap and/or a slight pick swap (17/21 25/28 type stuff etc) is a fair deal. A first rounder given up for a third rounder back, for a guy who hasn't played in 2 years, is way over the odds.

I have faith that if Balme and the boys do the deal, it won't be at that price.

Re: Geelong Interested In Jesse W Smith

Could be, but I would suggest if anything, salary cap pressure is the main reason for not going after him. I would also suggest that they are more happy to stick with Wojak if he is willing to concede some cash to stay.

On another note, I laugh at Lovett moving to the Saints to chase a premiership. Could've had one if he took less cash to join the Cats last year.

Big Balmey did talk about money being a problem earlier.

I assume he is contracted for next year in that case.

I guess this just proves that when downhill skiers like Lovett choose their contests, they choose em' wrong :D

He was offered a 1 year performance based deal by the Roos and he didn't want to take it.

Whether he does want to take it now or take the risk of going into the drafts I don't know.

If it is right that we backed out due to the salary cap then we haven't got $$$ to take him in the draft, so it doesn't really matter.

Anyone else hear Pickers on SEN say Geelong were trying to get the deal done with North on Friday with picks and/or trade. Jesse Smith has modified his run following the anke injury which has caused the hamstring problems. He wants to join Geelong partly because of its first class medical staff etc. Pickers also hinted that JWS may be taken by Geelong in the PSD for a late pick ... only caught this on the run so others may have more info/detail. From this I assume Geelong's medical staff think they can salvage sonmething from a promising young player

l was glad the cats didn't get smith in the trade week l herd north were asking for a high pick.but happy to get him for low pick in the PSD this draft is talked up about being bit weak so to get a good defender for a low pick will be bloody good.

Well this is possible since we have enough picks this year that we can definitely afford to pass on our last and keep one for the PSD if we want

And before people go the old line about 'he won't last as far as you in the PSD' it needs to be remembered that if you look at the history of PSD's, there are only a few positions that are 'live' (i.e. most clubs have usually committed beforehand to take a particular player) which if the amount of PSD movement is similar to how trade week has just been, there's a fair chance it could fall our way. Also lots of clubs won't want to waste a PSD pick on a speculative injury prone guy when there's more certain options, whereas due to the strength of our list, we are in more of a position to take a speculative choice.

I must however point out it all depends on why the trade didn't happen yesterday. If it's because we couldn't satisfy NM and Smith really wants to come to us, then we could get him via PSD. But if it didn't happen because we couldn't afford him under the cap, then he won't come in the draft either.

Well, here is the Herald Sun's take on Pickering's comments and NM's response - Smith is definately out and Geelong are keen. Not sure that the journo has been fair with the angle - the lack of facilities is a fact not a slur.

Yeah I think it wasn't unfair.

If you listen to this
http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/a...lp-me-jess-smith/story-e6frf9jf-1225786062715

one on one interview with him, he makes it clear that he doesn't blame the north medical staff, he just knows that it's his last chance and so he wants to give himself the best chance of it coming off by going to the best support environment he can.:thumbsu:

Cant we get him in the ND?

If you mean, is he eligible to nominate for the ND, then yes.
He is also able to nominate for the PSD.
So assuming he wants to come to us there'll be some consultation with him to determine which draft would give him the best chance of getting to us.

In the ND I doubt he'd go first or even second round, but he still might go before 40 (I reckon we'd take him with one of 40, 42 or 56). So I reckon the idea is to nominate only for the PSD.....there will hopefully be a lot of non live picks, and we can take him with our PSD pick.
