Which of the GWS midielders could we target this off-season?

I think Hately would work well with blokes like Parfitt, Narkle, Fogarty. Or do we want some class users like Caldwell?

I believe both are OOC this season.

We could probably get one of them without selling the farm. Might require a 2nd round pick, or a first with a second sent back with the player.

Cost V Reward. How many GWS released players have become top 5 players at the new club? I like the idea but would we get a young Dangerfield or perhaps a marginal improvement on who we could draft or have on our list.

Yeah, I know.
Been a some average ones, but also some pretty good ones...
Marchbank, Adams, WHE, Bruce, Treloar... Since that article in 2017, also Smith and Shiel.
You'd say all those blokes would be Best 22 at our club.

Losing Hawkins, Selwood, Danger and Ablett is gonna be brutal and we already are missing a ruck.

It’s going to require the biggest rebuild since the 99-2001 period and were only at the start of it.

For all the praise CS received post-2011 for making the hard calls on veterans, I don’t think he’s been tough enough in recent times. Harry and Gaz should have retired end of 2019.

I’d rather poach a proven player, e.g. Zac Williams, rather than take a punt on one of their 19-year old kids a la Josh Caddy.

I dont think CS thinks we are a genuine chance with the kids so they are hitting in hope with Taylor and Ablett.......

You have a fair point, especially if players can not find a way to be regular best22. Its all rel to cost for mine. If you can get the right player, he will probably be at a discount of what he would have cost in the draft. I think they have a couple of players that id trade a late R1 for. XOH and Caldwell for eg.

Caldwell will probably get offers just by himself, if XOH doesnt get games you may get him added to the deal.

but I still agree , someone in the side has to be the more reliable pick..like Hately for example.

For a while we had to play 2-4 guys under 50 games, I dont think thats required any more yet we still have seen players like Clark and Miers last year.. so I think we are still transitioning reasonably. Would be handy if we had a young defender play so well that Taylor struggles to get picked.

I personally think XOH is too vanilla. Caldwell would be the only kid of theirs I'd take the punt on. Hately will probably play 200 serviceable games, but Caldwell could be anything.

Nothing wrong with Vanilla, plenty of players descibed that way have played over 200. If he fails to make any inroads this year XOH would probably be an addendum to any deal.

Caldwell the only? Gee thats pretty tight. I pressume you mean the kids you think would be available, OOC and gettable?

The kids taken in last years draft would have to appeal but as I sai its all rel to cost. The value of someone in one draft based on their junior form doesnt really mean they are worth that in an open pool. Kids very open to interpretation too. To me everyone from Riccardi down I could live with being on our list, trading and how much to pay is another point.

Caldwell's durability worries me..I think Hately is a bankable B+ that our midfield could use..I'd take him.

get me zac Williams though.

Yes, I was referring to OOC and gettable only. XOH’s U18 numbers were only serviceable. I project him to become a Darcy Tucker at best, an Elliott Kavanagh at worst.

Would love someone like Williams but he would cost an arm and a leg to get if we could pry a young guy e.g Caldwell or whoever out for a late first or even better a second and still be able to go to the draft with a strong hand i would be all for it.

In Williams case though GWS would want most of what we have to get him.

Williams will be a restricted free agent, which makes it easier. We just have to offer more money than them, and I dare say we'd have more room to move than they would after a few retirements at the end of the year.

I didn't notice that in that case i am all aboard :thumbsu: :thumbsu: :thumbsu:

Houli, Isaac Smith and Josh Kennedy (WCE) are all unrestricted FAs. Brad Crouch, Jeremy Cameron and Stefan Martin are all restricted FAs. And other non-FA players out of contract are Andrew McGrath, Bailey Smith, Ben Brown, Brayden Fiorini, and Charlie Dixon.

Williams is a free agent though so it's really just about offering big $ and convincing him to come.

I would look at one of their younger players for the right price though.

Id take the hill kid.

he already re-signed.

xoh Caldwell Hately Finlayson and Williams would be the targetable ones I'd say.

plus we will go all out for Cameron but he will stay there I reckon.

I was not seriously thinking he was gettable, just that If I had a choice etc.

I suspect by years end Hately will be expensive but considering they have Green1 and Green2 coming , he might be gettable. Id think the the SA clubs would be looking hard at him

I see we named a decent team this week. It still looks unbalanced on the outside midfield. Just lacking pace there, and that could have been an easy fix in a trade in the off-season. Normally an outside midfielder can be obtained with series of Pick swap/downgrade. Doing something similar like the Demons did on the Ed Langdon trade...

Its not like Wellsy will use all our first round picks, he seems to like a bit of a punt with later picks.

And yes, Zac Williams would be a great pick-up. Can play midfield, inside and outside, and a great defender.

Hately looks better than C Stephens and C Constable, in terms of our next gen bigger body inside midfielders. I would get him if the trade was the right price. No questions.

It's a bit early to be casting judgement on Cooper Stephens isn't it? He's played one pre-season game after not playing for more than 12 months.
