With Lyon coming in we have toughened the fu** up in our coaching experience, and there is a guy to challenge the groupthink or CS mindset.

Lyon is likely a dick to work with but he has a great footy brain, and will take no prisoners.

Great addition, and maybe will put CS on notice.
Jumping the gun there. The club has approached lyon but that’s as far as it has got so far. Not even close to reality just yet. He still might very well say no thanks.

I don't think bringing in an experienced coach is a bad idea, but I fundamentally disagree with it being Lyon from an ethics standpoint. I know the other stuff has happened, but Lyon was a man that allegedly made women at Freo uncomfortable with how he spoke to and treated them. Bringing that into the club with that knowledge is unfair on the people already at the club and just plain morally wrong to me.
I can certainly understand that concern and there's a chance it goes pear shaped but I would think that with his history he would be on a very short leash with that kind of thing.

If anything you would be safe in the knowledge that if he stepped out of line at all he'd be in deep s***. Plus, having a history like his and having it be public knowledge means that women know that they'll be believed when they speak up.

He has created the rod for his back and handed it to everyone who walks through the door.

It doesn't really feel like it as we haven't made any tough calls but with 10 list changes as per the AFL site article it is the 2nd most behind Hawthorn

Given the media felt the need to get confirmation from the club that Higgins and Dal would be seeing out their final year of the contract I’m guessing the club did try and lean on them to finish up early, but they held their ground and good on them- even though I wouldn’t have been shattered.

Tough calls will be next year with
Touhey
Selwood,
Higgins,
Dal,
Hawk,
Smith,

Higgins, Dal won’t be offered another
Selwood likely to retire
Touhey is hard but I’d hope that youngsters form helps the club make the tough call to say no- although I really think he would be great to keep at the club in some capacity
Hawk- will go on but can we save a couple of hundred grand for free agents in his new contract?
Smith- I would give another year but again any oldy going on can’t expect to be paid like a 28 year old

Yeh and only 1 player over 30, that’s the worry. We will have a hole in the 23-28 range and a bunch 18-22 and 29-33 range. Not a good spread so will need to get a few free agents in next year and maybe a delisted player this year

Next year we will have even more list changes than that i reckon.

I think we can should get our best pick (22) and combine it with our 2022r2, see what we can get for it. Maybe Brisbane's pick 14 is gettable with this combination.

NO. Leave 22 where it is. 4th best selection outside the first round... high potential sliders hole.
Use 30-32-34 and next years if you want to enter the first round.
Pick 30-32-34 are quite valuable to us TBH. Plenty of good players with very little exposed form will land here.
Unless there is a specific player we want why offload next years 2nd this early. Do it on the day.

We've had that gap badly for a while but our youngsters from the 2016 draft should step up and fill that gap now.

The gap on our list is the 5 years between Parfitt (23 years 5 months) and Cameron (28 years 6 months). We only have 5 players in that range and apart from O'Connor who I think will be a gun, they're unproven (Narkle) or just role players (Bews, Kolo and Atkins). It's sort of astonishing that we're so competitive with that age gap.

On the bright side we've got a lot of good young players who are moving in to that range and we should expect big improvements from this group over the next couple of years.

O'Connor was threatening to break out before injury and Parfitt, Simpson, Zuthrie, Ratugolea, Close, Henry, Stengle and Miers will all be 23 round 1 next year. That's a big and talented group who can and must improve for us to be competitive long-term.

So yes we'll probably look to add players in the 24-26 range in the next few years but the core group which we've been waiting a few years for is there now.

Not as convinced about that group (aside from Henry) but I hope you're right.

We do need mids and the concern might be that brown doesnt quite develop into a mid long term only a half back but i would argue as much as urr mids we need more run and better ball use all over the ground and his ball use is very good so he could well be in the frame for our picks.
I pretty much just want mids but would make an exception for an especially quick/tall player with upside.

Ok so Geelong will give the leadership group and officials the weekend to enjoy catching up with fam and friends but I am sure todays announcement has Hocking popping to the butchers to get steaks and checking his cellar for what red wine he has.

Who is on Monday nights 2022 dinner planning list and how can we get a recording device in there….

Hocking’s House.

Scott
Wells
Selwood
Lappin
Kelly
Grigg
Lloyd
Mackie
Danger
Betts- only so he feels included and he should be but if he is stuck in metro I would invite Issac a smith

First they chew the fat and after a few reds it’s the leading teams what are we going to do, what’s everyone’s biggest hard truth opinion and biggest reason to be optimistic

Someone bug a phone or something please

Sorry to intrude again but have you got your eye on any Falcons. I like the look of Gennaro Bove and Cooper Whyte. Are they on your drafting radar ?

I think this misses the point. Misogyny isn't something you keep on a short "leash".

How convinced were you on Henry this time last year? I'm guessing not at all. Weird things happen when young players get mature bodies and minds and then get given responsibility.

I'm very bullish on O'Connor, Parfitt and Simpson and if they get an injury free run along with responsibility in midfield they've shown enough to convince me that will be excellent AFL level footballers.

The rest are less certain. Zuthrie I doubt will ever be more than a role player. But the others have shown real potential and are already solid role players at AFL level. I'd be disappointed if at least 1 or 2 of Close, Stengle, Miers and Ratugolea don't improve significantly from here.

Definitely agree with that and the last part should be almost printed on the walls. Countless examples of young players getting thrown in and after a few seasons turn into guns (Scarlett and Rance two very obvious examples). Wasn't as convinced on Henry, but I liked him straight away. Not as sure about the others, but I'd desperately love to be wrong. Even Zuthrie for all his criticisms I thought was a long way from our worst in the Prelim.

Biggest one that a lot of us are interested in and the club probably is too given in our propensity for drafting Falcons, is probably Mitch Knevitt I'd say. Then also Toby Conway and Oscar Morrison.

Guys that you posted, not so sure about tbh.

This is a symptom of the high volume, low quality draft strategy. Geelong has taken the 4th most national draft selections since 2011 but has had access to the worst draft picks during that time (ranked by DVI).

Incidentally, Hawthorn ranks near last in both.

Yeah maybe. I guess I don't know all the details so hard for me to judge. Maybe it's a poor decision. Maybe they see him being at arms length from the playing group acting more as a technical consultant for the coaches rather than someone who has any definitive cultural impact. I'm not sold on the idea of getting him in the first place but depending on the how and why I don't see it as an uncontrollable situation.
