Yeah maybe. I guess I don't know all the details so hard for me to judge. Maybe it's a poor decision. Maybe they see him being at arms length from the playing group acting more as a technical consultant for the coaches rather than someone who has any definitive cultural impact. I'm not sold on the idea of getting him in the first place but depending on the how and why I don't see it as an uncontrollable situation.

Maybe he can be like the Smoking Man to Scott's Fox Mulder. Shrinking into the shadows and answering Scott's paranoid hypotheses with increasing obscurantism. No-one really knows who he actually works for.

This is a symptom of the high volume, low quality draft strategy. Geelong has taken the 4th most national draft selections since 2011 but has had access to the worst draft picks during that time (ranked by DVI).

Incidentally, Hawthorn ranks near last in both.

This cuts to the meat of it.

It's not so much that we have not visited the draft, its that we have just not been able to access enough high quality chances. The result is a revolving door on drafted talent.

I can only hope we do a little better this year... the cruz of our best22 will have to go soon..so at least the drafted talent will get more opportunity even at the cost of some games.

The main trust I remember was frustration. We had gone from an honourable PF loss, to the semi final loss in the see but don't believe it game, to a look where all the years was going to be wasted ..yet again.

The look of our side mainly look good players but it looked like we lacked high quality. We had some that looked like the typical wasters of talent, pretty sure that was the year Mooney got reported 4 times? Milburn was undisciplined and Ablett was just playing on talent , and had not tried to elevate beyond that.


In the space of 12 months , that changed to having a side of AA players...id say in a similar fashion to how we will soon look at Melb.

The key to that was the underlying talent was there. Some players finding their best level at their best age. The group becoming a melded group that had been developed together that was willing to do what ever they needed to do.. to avoid what it looked like..where they were heading was a repeat of so many years before.

If Scott is so good why do we need another "opinionated coach". Scope for conflict there. Further the game has changed since Lyon's day; has he changed with it?

With the draft we need:

3 mids who can actually kick the ball and hit targets

1 or 2 half backs to replace the dross we've got there now (Kolo, Atkins for starters)

1 or 2 forwards in the medium to tall range to replace Rohan and Esava ( who may yet earn a spot with natural improvement.

Zac Taylor would be great as would young Brown. I dream about a classy long-breaking left-footer but Wells seems to shun lefties for some reason.

nah don’t stress, very hard thing to predict after coming 9th in 06.

have no interest in shaming anyone, more just interested to go back in time and observe a more realistic picture of how development works. It is not a linear transformation from drafting a bunch Of star kids with gradual incremental improvement to announcing the champs are here… it’s more of an up and down squiggly line filled with highs and lows and non predictability, until the day it all comes together.

Looking at a few of the recent phantoms I’m keen to trade up to secure another higher pick. Ideally Brisbane’s second but more realistically the Dog’s pick 23. Around that mark, having 2 consecutive picks, I’m confident we can secure 2 mids of good quality.

Agree with those that mention Zac Taylor - high production and has elite kicking skills. Really think he needs to be prioritized.

Knevitt and Connor MacDonald are the other two I’m particularly interested in. A tall mid that can win his own footy - tested well. And MacDonald, high production as well, wins his own footy, good skills.

They’re my 3. Whilst Brown looks a great option, I think our immediate priorities lie elsewhere just at the moment.

Although I agree, it's no different than bringing in Balme to oversee Bomber. It happens often, even if some of us aren't fans of it.

Wasn’t balme more of the head of the football department, rather than someone who was there to oversee coaching and strategy? 2 different positions.

Balme was older than Bomber and probably a less abrasive personality; but if it works out well for us I won't complain.

Bomber was a strange unit but he knew footy: I heard him on ABC radio once commenting on a game and he described what was happening on the filed better than anyone I've ever heard.

I actually think Lyon isnt a bad appointment, took two very average lists to grand finals and have always thought he comes across as very insightful in his media work, better credentialed than most other coaches on the market.

It's why I kept it all these years as a reminder of how things can change quickly in life and not only football.

We've had that gap badly for a while but our youngsters from the 2016 draft should step up and fill that gap now.

The gap on our list is the 5 years between Parfitt (23 years 5 months) and Cameron (28 years 6 months). We only have 5 players in that range and apart from O'Connor who I think will be a gun, they're unproven (Narkle) or just role players (Bews, Kolo and Atkins). It's sort of astonishing that we're so competitive with that age gap.

On the bright side we've got a lot of good young players who are moving in to that range and we should expect big improvements from this group over the next couple of years.

O'Connor was threatening to break out before injury and Parfitt, Simpson, Zuthrie, Ratugolea, Close, Henry, Stengle and Miers will all be 23 round 1 next year. That's a big and talented group who can and must improve for us to be competitive long-term.

So yes we'll probably look to add players in the 24-26 range in the next few years but the core group which we've been waiting a few years for is there now.

Not convinced on O'Connor anymore.

And imo, Ratugolea won't make it.

O'Connor was injured pretty much all year. The games he did play looked good I thought. Let's see what he looks like next year

Id like to see MOC have a big pre season, if we can get his fitness base up he could easily transition into the midfield as an attacking threat and not just a tagger, simiarly to how he played back in his gaelic days, good size at 191/88.

I'm not seeing how Lyon's appointment would assist our quest for a faster, more finals capable, game plan........

My issue with it (which also goes along with Scotts extension) is I feel its just more of the same.
All mates, guys who likely won't question or really look to change things up.
The club just feels full of nepotism at the moment and keeping the status quo.
In fairness ladder position results probably suggest it's a good strategy, but it's one with a time limit that's about ready to go off (I reckon next season is our last genuine shot at competing, as in top 4, beyond that we'll face retirements of some all time greats and we'll fall away pretty badly).
