I've heard good things about Holmes before
I've yet to see it from him at AFL level
It wasn't nerves that makes him run to the wrong spots
It wasn't nerves that makes him chase after a player rather than anticipate ahead
It wasn't nerves that made him miss from the goal line
It wasn't nerves that makes him choose bad options
Nerves, Excitable, Klutz, or Dumb... hoping it is not the unfixable one.

heckler, I am no sports psychologist, but i reckon all of the above can be contributed by first year nerves.

I think wait and see on those calls until at least end of next season.

the things you highlighted I would be very suprised To see an 18 year old first year player excel at. All areas being in the system will greatly improve. Under 18’s to AFL is a huge jump.

Couldn’t disagree with a post more. Got wheels, got size and is excellent in close, can’t teach that. Will be a ripper. I think a few are dismissing him for all the reasons you mentioned due to a few rushed shots at goal. If he was available in this years draft he goes in single figures for me.
Hopefully I’m right and you are not 😄

Could not agree more with this and really surprised with people who are low on him. He is as competitive as ****, a serious athlete with decent skills. Think he will be a good player or even a fair bit better but really hard to see how people could think he is no good. They must be watching a different player to me.

I'm hearing that both Stanley and Esava will be doing defensive work over pre season. Geelong will avoid playing two specialist rucks in the same 22, so unless Cameron or Hawkins miss chunks of football, I expect that one or both of Stanley or Esava will see time in D50. Having Egan (potentially) and Taylor at the club will no doubt help speed up the progress of the likes of SDK, but will also help if Geelong intend to get a few different looks until someone stakes a claim on the position.

If Ceglar puts his hand up and holds down a ruck spot for most of the year, I think we'll see a few pieces on the chess board moved around. If Ceglar is just insurance, then we still know what we've got with the Stanley / Esava combo that served us ok last year.

In terms of midfield, it will be a minor changing of the guard as some have suggested. Not wholesale changes as the panic merchants have demanded, but Selwoods time will be reduced in a pure mid role as we know, and they see O'Connor as someone who will push into the midfield and spend more time there. Holmes will get more game time (his midfield time in finals pointed to where they see him) and everyone seems to forget the amount of footy Duncan and C Guthrie missed last year. Midfield rotations are key - and I don't think there's too many concerns when we have a core group of Selwood Dangerfield Guthrie Duncan Holmes O'Connor Parfitt Narkle to run through there. Maybe missing one classy player with leg speed and that's no doubt what the focus will be on draft night.

2022 will be the last roll of the dice before the the rebuild
Changes will be minimal with more exposure given to youth
Following than we can expect big changes and a transition to youth
I like the Stanley to defence move it has merit
Esava is a very slow learner and will struggle in defence

Perhaps Holmes is a little like that.

IMO, it's been a fair while since we have had guys who had a surplus of athletic talent yet little footy nous. David Clark Jr was a classic, and we do have some like Blitz in the club, perhaps Sav but its others that seemed to be failing and being delisted. I suspect the vast majority of our failures, like Constable, have been due to a lack of some form of talent. Footy nous is one of those but so are the measurables in a combine. I believe what we need is to be earlier in the que. Its where nous and talent have a convergence.

Drafting is not choosing physical over smarts
It's about evaluating the merit of both and making the correct call
Player highlight videos tends to highlight the physical aspects more
The earlier draft picks tend to be the best physical performers.
Later draft picks should be tailored differently and consider footy Smarts.

honestly throw SDK to the wolves... its his third pre season in the system, if his good enough, its time to join the big stage.

Let the experienced heads around him help play a supporting role and come over the top.

he can also be played on smaller players, as he is agile and quick for his height, and can be used as that floating intercept marker down back... think he could really cause headaches in this role for opposition as the floating interceptor ( aka lever style role).

Am looking forward to his presence down back as surely he is now a lock in our defense... will be suprised if they don't play him

2022 will see minimal changes as the Cats have one last crack at the flag
Expect SDK to have more games next year... he will meet the wolves in 2023

We all have own opinions, this is a forum after all. But to say he is running to wrong spots or not anticipating play ahead or chosing wrong options when nearly all of us hardly saw a game this year is a tad rough. We all appreciate how different the game looks when we are there live to see a wide angle as opposed to that on tele. I reckon what he achieved this year with his football history was phenomenal, to force his way in and then demand a position in the fourth best team in the comp. Really looking forward to his progress.

Holmes is also the youngest player on our list, only just turned 19.

Holmes significantly exceeded expectations. He was a very inexperienced footballer and to play in two finals was a fantastic effort, particularly since we have heard all post season ‘we don’t give the youf a chance.’

He was very composed in traffic (admittedly not near goal), quick and a neat kick. Attacks the ball on the ground but a little timid in the air (which I would put down to his inexperience).

He also dominated early VFL games and the rumblings out of club were very strong very early.

Is a serious prospect, but he is going to need a few mates over the next decade in that midfield. And we have all seen potential not be realised too often to declare him a future Carji winner just yet.

Disagree. Local leagues are full of players with footy smarts. If they fall short of talent they will never have a chance to play afl in this era.

Just calling Holmes as I see it.. If that rumour: he only played 15 games of footy, is true ... it explains his lack of footy smarts.
I don't dispute his physical attributes... therein lies the hope that many salivate over.
I too hope young Holmes becomes a star... unfortunately my gut says hold foo for now.
Worry is, being INTJ... I'm usually the first to notice talent or lack thereof.

Read the first two lines...
Edited my post : focus to consider :
Point taken : Nothing is absolute.

There is just no chance we can will the flag with minimal change, and I think the club has finally recognised that in cleaning out the footy dept. Scott has been offered an extension but there is no confirmation from the club he has signed yet. Assuming he will/has, there is still no way it is going to be the same team and quite rightly it’s just not good enough. Fresh blood, speed and strategy is needed.

This is a borderline post, lol. Holmes played in 2 finals in his first year, and had 3 BOG's in his first 3 games in the VFL...before things started getting interrupted again.

Again...in his first year, as a pretty scrawny kid. He has so much upside, it's ridiculous. Cannot believe how brutally judgemental/uninformed this post is.

I was told he was poised and skilled...
I saw rushed and raw.
Guess I expected more.
Not ruled out
Still waiting patiently
Comprehension matters

His first year was not nearly as good as Clark's yet he is gone 2 years later. I like the kids defensive side but am not seeing an out and our star like some on here. I think his upside is a Guthrie level player who is very very good but no star.
If you don't see talent in him, then you just can not judge talent at all

One of the worst posts i have read this year you would not know talent if it hit you in the face

with henderson out, there is a vacant spot for a Key back. kolo and henry are modern day medium defenders and cannot hold down key forwards, so who do you think will take that spot?? and it wont be rhys stanley

i think history shows a completely different story, and that we always prioritise quality youth into the side.

Parfitt they fitted into the team first year, henry they put in second year to play every game. Miers they put in second season, holmes they threw in first season for games, clark they threw in first season for alot of games as well.

i have heard scott say if the call is lineball, they go with youth, and its proven true

Are we not getting Harry back at Geelong?

I have no concerns about CHB.
