If Sanders is gone by Pick 7, I'd definitely trade 7 for Dogs 10+17 - but I don't think they will want to do that.I'd take that in a heartbeat.
What do we reckon? 7 + 28 to the draft? Nate Caddy + George Stevens would make for an exciting few years in the future.
Or do we trade for the Dogs 10 + 17 and take 10, 17 & 28 to the draft? Could be an injection of youth that really changes the landscape for us ala Port 2018.
Shadow89 this seems right up your alley, that future side could be looking pretty special in a month or so!!
It's all a furphy psyh op type of threat to keep him on the narrow during the off-season... Once preseason starts again for them, he's under control again.Listening to SEN today, I’d say it’s 99% that Oliver stays at Melbourne. They’ve given him the “ship up, or ship out” ultimatum. Can’t imagine a scenario where he says “get stuffed” and requests a trade.
Agree. If you had a 7 year contract in your back pocket and the last week has probably decreased your value by a fair bit would you leave?Listening to SEN today, I’d say it’s 99% that Oliver stays at Melbourne. If Sanders is there I'd take him as well, but I'm assuming he's not.If Sanders is gone by Pick 7, I'd definitely trade 7 for Dogs 10+17 - but I don't think they will want to do that.
So presumably its okay for us to call them at Pick 7 if Sanders is already gone, and say to them, "hey listen doggies we are gonna bid on Croft here unless you trade us 10 + 17 for our 7?" Kind of like a nice threat, and see if they bend...If Sanders is there I'd take him as well, but I'm assuming he's not.
Dogs have to get rid of 17 anyway because of the Croft bid, so we could always force their hand in that sense.
Take 10, 17 & 28 to the draft and add to our young nucleus that would suddenly be one of the better groups in the league.
Pretty much, and it works for us either way.So presumably its okay for us to call them at Pick 7 if Sanders is already gone, and say to them, "hey listen doggies we are gonna bid on Croft here unless you trade us 10 + 17 for our 7?" Kind of like a nice threat, and see if they bend...
A week ago they were saying we could have him, now they are saying he’s an elite outside player. The Port forum is not happy about losing Duursma, and it sounds like their list manager is open to trading him. Port Forum reckon he is their best outside runner.mid...
All true, but I can’t see how our list is 1 player off a flag. Way overvaluing our list. Our 2023 best 22 was significantly worse than our 2022 best 22 due to both declines and retirements. It's a different era now GC26. Gone are the days where you need to be great on every line to win flags.
The expansion clubs have diluted the talent available, and it's why we're seeing more and more sides win them with players that make you go 'Really?!? that guy is a premiership player!?'
For us, Oliver might just be the difference between another flag or not next year. The defence you'd think will bounce back, the forward line is still as talent laden as ever...it's really just the midfield.
My personal view is to go youth like we did last year, and it's why I'd prefer Smith. It would set us up for another great era IMO when the kids and Smith are all in their prime.
But if the club believes Clayton Oliver is the difference between getting #11 or not, then they'll do it...and they might just be right. Brisbane & Collingwood are not that good.
Time to start rectifying some myths. All true, but I can’t see how our list is 1 player off a flag. Way overvaluing our list. Our 2023 best 22 was significantly worse than our 2022 best 22 due to both declines and retirements.
Hawkins slipped marginally due to injury, SDK fell off a cliff and was very average, dangerfield declined, Tuohy declined, bews is now a liability, Stengle was a shadow of himself, selwood retired… Stanley declined, ceglar was crap…
I don’t see just the arrival of Oliver or any 1 individual rectifying all of the above….
You are right, we don’t have to be great as the comp is spread thin and mediocre.. but we are not 1 player off a flag right now
I'd take 28 for Sav if it was actually 28 but it will get pushed back into the 30s with the compromised draft. If Sanders is there I'd take him as well, but I'm assuming he's not.

How many list spots doe we have?
You would think we would at least consider the two Werribee players. mentioned here.
Have not seen Mannagh play but was a bit like Stengle in the VFL GF. I wonder why he was not a consideration in the MSD?
Brother of Ted Clohesy, Sam Clohesy claimed the Fothergill-Round-Mitchell Medal as the promising young talent. Only 20... I wonder why he did not qualify as his brother did for RookieB?

Clubs 'significantly interested' in standout Werribee duo
Departing Werribee coach Michael Barlow says Shaun Mannagh and Sam Clohesy deserve to be on an AFL list after standout seasons at VFL levelwww.afl.com.au
Know little about either. Mannagh looks like he could play in the right side but I could understand why we might look at others but it does make me wonder why chose to pick Hardie instead of SamC. Sounds like he would be a decent fitCurrently senior list spots will be 6 (smith menegola ceglar whyte simpson sav off) although i suspect will be 5 with dempsey elevated. Mannagh i would be a fan of and ditto clohesy although the latter has a number of clubs keen on him.
Yes ive been reccommending that although they might have already traded up to p4 by then.
Now do Rhys Stanley who I’ve seen numerous poster say had a massive drop off in 2023.Time to start rectifying some myths.
Dangerfield: more coaches votes and Brownlow votes this year than last, just had an awkwardly timed rib break/lung puncture.
Hawkins: goal/assist average were both above career averages and close to 2022.
Stengle, SDK and Holmes are young with big ceilings and could easily bounce back. Ceglar was always irrelevant. Stanley/Blicavs will remain a solid combo. Bruhn is borderline as a potential break out player and Guthrie returns as our two time BnF midfielder. Duncan should be able to slot back and replace Tuohy's half back drive (leaving Holmes and Dempsey/Knevitt etc for the wings). We do need a Bews replacement - let's hope one of the Irish boys can step up.
We had 6-9 best 22 players missing half the season and usually a few of them were very important ones. It's a ridiculous overreaction to write us off when our having a best 18-19 out of 22 had us beating Melbourne, Port, Adelaide, Bulldogs (first time) etc.

And the best indication of that is his 2023 season, but for a broken face costing him two months out, was comparable to his 2022.He and Blicavs will remain a solid combo.

But there was a lack of continuity with only 3 players featuring in all 24 games. Now that's a myth. Who exactly were these 6-9 best players that missed "half a season". I can find three:
- Cam Guthrie - played 6 games
- Jack Henry - played 11 games
- Rhys Stanley - played 13 games
Our best 18-19 was absolutely good enough to beat Melbourne, Port, Adelaide, and the Dogs. But our best 18-19 also lost to Gold Coast, St.Kilda, Port, and worst of all Fremantle at Geelong. Pretending it was due to injuries is denying reality.
You've misinterpreted what that means. In any given week for around half of the season (in total), 6 (let's say 9 was an exagerration although it was around 9 for a month) best 22 players were missing. A different combination each week. Now that's a myth. Who exactly were these 6-9 best players that missed "half a season". I can find three:

Yeah he thought I went 6-9 players missed half a season. Very different to having 11 weeks of our season where we were missing 6 or more players. But there was a lack of continuity with only 3 players featuring in all 24 games.
Cameron May have come back a few weeks after the concussion but he then played out most of the season with a bung shoulder and was a shadow of the player who dominated early season. De Koning was not the same player after successive head knocks early in the season. Esava started like a rocket until injured. Still played 16 games but wasn’t the same IMO.
