I just never understood why they took Phillips so early.

He simply didn't look that good (not saying he was a spud though)... maybe they fell in love with his character, toughness & leadership qualities.

He could still turn into a solid player down the track with a good run without injuries.

People might get their backs up about me saying this next line... I worry the same thing could happen to us with Jhye Clark.

Although I do see more in Clark than I did in Phillips... And Phillips went even earlier... Was a bizare selection imo.

P.S. Reid has about 10x more talent and tricks than Phillips so a right-up means nothing to me... It's obvious to see with our own eyes.

Phillips will be a decent player if he has a good injury run. That said i think he will be more a B+ grader and clark projects higher than that for me he has potential A grade qualities.

The issue is that north overlooked mcdonald which given their issues with tall timber was really stupid

Can't trade for what's not there and right now Cadman ain't there

He isnt now but if he hasnt signed by mid next year theres a good chance hes coming back to vic.

That's a shame. Have always loved Macrae, and would have rather got a few years from him for a decent price, rather than a king's ransom for someone like Smith (neither are happening so the point is moot, but still my preference hypothetically).

I was hoping the 'mystery mid' would be Tom Powell. Same draft as Phillips, and someone I've liked since his draft year. Wouldn't cost a whole lot, and would add a lot to our future midfield.

Phillips should be fine, but Powell has been played out of position/had way too many mids drafted in front of him to really showcase his worth. Would love us to have a sniff next year.

If the Dog's extend JUH and English on what really will be monster contracts after just giving Naughton one... surely they just can't be keeping Smith.

Not saying we get Smith (anyone could) but if a club is offering Smith a big contract I just don't see how the Dogs can match it $$$ wise and have a fourth monster contract within 12 months signed off (yes I know they do not need to match an offer but if Smith is to stay it won't be on unders).

I'm kinda surprised they are not letting Smith go now to get maximum value for him and to have more of an idea on what $$$ they have left to play with.

They gotta lose players if they keep them all on big $$$.

You think Conway can get fit enough to run out a game let alone a season? I'd love to see it but we have more chance of Kolo being our leading goal kicker next season.
over the next 24 months yes... he's the future.

In 2024 he will improve well IMO but not enough to meet a full season as #1 ruck.

Neale is a mark and grab guy. I really hope he develops. His efforts against St Kilda this year shows he is a long way off. Neale gets lots of posts about his potential but 1 goal in 5 AFL games is a poor return. I bundle him in the group like Frampton, Koschitzke, Mc Donald, Thilthorp, Van Rooyan and others i may have missed. They take nice grabs with quality service but not elite. No ground ball second efforts, footy IQ lacking for example: bringing the ball to the ground when out of position. Lord may be just another mark and grab guy.

I know im 17000k away but ive seen plenty of VFL and Neale can do many things.

Id disagree on the following:
-No Ground ball second efforts - Ive seen the footage in both AFL and VFL games of him doping exactly this both in F50 and as as ruck around the ground.
  • No Footy IQ - I disagee but have less examples of it to refer to. What ive seen is he leads to the right spots, understands the game and body positioning and jusges the ball in flight well. And in IMO it will prospoer with more AFL experience.
  • Bringing the ball to ground when out of position - Needs the most work here yes.

If the rumours are true, they might be letting Smith go - to the Hawks. But I don't think there's anything substantial to that just yet.

How easy would it be to dislike Bailey Smith in a Hawthorn guernsey 😃

It's easy to dislike ANYONE in a Hawthorn jumper.

iShank Smith deserved our contempt and derision.

Isaac 'Norm' Smith was a a fantastic player for us and was a good bloke!

I think a Phillips-like pick is a missunderstanding of the value of an early pick.

Yeah I don't know where the idea he's not good at ground level has come from. His biggest issue looks like he's got the game of a tall winger in the body of a key forward at the moment. He has some skills but really needs to learn how to develop his physicality to the point where he can compete either as key forward or in the ruck.

If Sav went into the ND he'd have to be a chance to get through to Port's #25.

Maybe North with all their late first-rounders would be threat as they need key position defenders.

Hawks only currently hold #4 and #33.

Sav and Port would not be keen at all for it to get to that though but I'm just having a think about how it could go down if no trade was made.

North & Hawks with earlier picks in the PSD so I don't think that would help Port.

Whatever happens... Sav is gonna get paid so he should be good... Him getting paid at a different club doesn't help Port though.

I think that like a lot of tall players that have always been tall Shannon has "soft hands" in a marking contest. Because they are so tall they never have to really contest for the ball in the air and do not develop "strong hands". I think it is really hard for players like that to recover from it. As a result will always play more like a flanker or winger or just be able to use his size to attack a pack and bring the ball to ground but not be able to take strong grabs.

Cats are been catty.
Normally if a player wants to leave we help them move
Just looking for a level of compensation that = the contract offered.

On the other hand... If the Cats need, target, and commit to a player we pay up to get the deal done (not to forget that this player has been courted for 2 years now).

It doesn't need to be done until the trade deadline on Wednesday night, so we still have plenty of time to help Sav and Port out.
