Add a decent midfielder and Guthrie into a team that has now has gotten a full season into guys like Bruhn, Henry and Bowes to get them used to the Geelong system, along with anyone else we might trade in, and add in we have a full preseason + in theory an easier fixture next season and theres absolutely no reason we aren't top 4 and pushing for a Premiership.

None of the top 4 this year were impressive and flags the next few years are very gettable from the top 6.

I have never gone with this mindset... I feel it's a way for people to give themselves a bit of extra hope by thinking that it'll just get better in time.

Bobby Hill just won the Norm Smith in his first year at the Pies.
Stengle was AA last year in his first year with us (got worse in his 2nd year).
Danger won the Brownlow in his first year with us.
Mitchell played his role and helped the Pies this year in his first year with them.

If a player is good enough and ready to go they don't need the excuse of it only being their first year in a club's system.

Henry and Bruhn should naturally improve just due to age though (Henry had a solid year)... Bowes may improve just with a better injury run.

If we bring in Bailey Smith I'm not gonna cut him any slack next year because it'll be his first year in our system.

If we don’t use Dempsey I think we'll lose him.

AA vfl side for a kid who switched from basketball only a couple of years ago raises recruiters eyebrows

We will use him. He has reached that stage that he needs to be played ... we need to make that choice and the consequences may mean some dew kicking for players not used to it. We bring someone in with our P7, we have Clark, we have Demp ... and then a roulette player will appear form the names that we have on the list.

Demp and Max and speed ... and we need more of it. Mullin probably going be given time too as we need some speed from HB...the game is going down the path of quick transition an the cost of security... The days of D with the ball are almost D (thank heavens)

The addition of someone like Wilson to our list would be inductive of where we want to go. but that game yesterday had some kids that woudl be ideal. The kid Tobie Travaglia looked like one to keep an eye out for

I agree we have to use dempsey and i think we will..i think it means rohan will play less games and 2024 will be his last year.

We do need some speed but mainly we need to be fitter (look at ordinary pies and winning late in games because they are fit). We obviously need to plug some short term holes like a backup ruck (trade/dfa) and a backup kpd (vdh would probably be ideal) and some gap filling mid aged mids (mannagh for example would be ideal). But whoever we bring in at 7 or whatever we trade it down to will be good long term as will our r1 next year (that crop looks really good i wouldnt trade it) and i think clark will show a lot for us next year. Our core long term is pretty good. If we can attack the free agency period 12 months from now well (we will have a lot of cap) it should really help

I wouldn't go near the Collingwood depth players. Their top players are excellent and it was an amazing coaching job to get them over the line but their bottom 6 are average journeymen. MacRae earned 1 game all year in a team with an ordinary inside midfield (eg Lipinski being a regular). That suggests he's miles off it and it's his 3rd season.

Only partially agree pies gameplan puts emphasis on endurance and hard running to support defence and while lipinski is a spud he has a big tank. Macrae is still building a tank and once he does he will go past him.

On the other hand if you are a pies tall and guys like frampton are getting picked ahead of you you are a spud. I know johnson was injured but kreuger either must be injured again or very ordinary.

Id say a contributing factor to the fitness issue is wrapped in our age. Can we get our best players at max fitness and form... we were obviously not as fit from R1 in 2023.

I agree on our Fr1 now that I have seen that group. There is going be very good kids late in R1. Not much at either end of the ground but thru the middle.. if we could get Ports Fr1 somehow in the sav deal it would be ideal.
Obvious the group is again a little compromised Father Sons and academies , I can see the first round well in to the 20's next year.

Id also say Gold Coast is going to have be wary about what they take for P4...their kid Lombard looks a possible R1 too. No Falcons in R1 this year or next is unusual.

You wouldn’t have a link to yesterday’s underage game? Wasn’t able to watch it.

Mackie offering out first round pick for the right deal… Bailey Smith?
Premiership Woods going for Goldy … hmm good 2 years for more cup tilts…
Wells needs a big one I think

Yeah look i agree on all that..obviously theres a few that will go FS or acad like the campo twins and lombard and i think welsh will go fairly early. But in terms of the open pool the top 25 looks very good to me like 2018.
Which is why i wouldnt want to trade our future 1st and im open to trading back 7 if it gets us an extra future (ie 13 + future 1st from melb or similar).

Gc will have it under control when they split 4 they will be after points this year + a good future 1st from someone, so they can split it next year for lombard points if they need.

Fitness is a big deal..pies did well to keep most of their oldies on the park except howe (unlucky) but also they have a lot of mid 20s players and they are the least likely to get injured. Bc we have lots of over 30s and under 22s those need more managing re injuries so we are going to have to get a good fitness program for them. Ideally we find a couple more mid 20s age players through this trade period.

Frampton might be the worst premiership player I’ve seen.

Agree. 2 possessions. I missed the second one

Cam Mooney failed to register a possession in North’s 1999 premiership, but to his credit he spent most of the game on the bench

Again, we learn that gun key forwards are not the key difference in big finals.

We are in trouble against Collingwood next year. Our backline much to big to contain their small forwards

I would say small lockdown defender is a need

Not sure about that, Daniher was pretty good and if Hipwood went near the ball Lions probably win.
Cameron was awesome in last years finals series. If either team had a dominant key forward yesterday they could’ve blown the game away.

I do agree we need some small defenders, it’s been an issue on and off for many years. Bews can still play a role there, on the list I’d be putting O’Connor into a small defender role.

Don’t really understand going after Goldy. Granted he’s free, but one of the reasons they traded Grundy was because they were happy with Cameron and Cox rotating ruck/forward. You can’t have that balance with Goldstein there. Then there’s obviously the age thing

Could Parfitt be moulded into this role? His pressure and tackling are probably his greatest attributes. Or too undersized?

Bruhn was a mid that spent a year at an average GWS in and out of the side as a small forward, comes to us and is thrown straight in the guts for a full season in a team that had zero consistency. I think he was excellent but you can't build team chemistry when it changes so much week to week especially as a young player. Bowes came to us from a rabble and we didn't use him in his best position til the last game of the season.
Henry had an incredible season and continues to improve.

Bobby Hill was playing the same role at GWS that he did at the Pies and even though he only now has 65 AFL games he has been in the AFL system since 2019,
Stengle is an older and more mature player having already been at 2 other AFL clubs before us then worked hard at his craft in the lower leagues, Danger is a ****ing generational talent, and Mitchell has how many games to his name before he went to the Pies and slotted in at the Pies in the same role he played for so long at Hawthorn?

Its not really apples and apples comparison here. Especially since Bruhn and Henry are 21, Hill is 23, Danger/Stengle/Mitchell were 25+ when they switched clubs.
And its not really extra hope, some players (Joel Selwood) hit the ground running in the AFL and some players (CGuthrie) took time until they hit an elite level. We might not see Bruhns best for another 2/3 years. This might have been Bowes peak.

But we had a massively disjointed and horrendously interrupted year with injuries, suspensions and form, and I find it hard to believe that another full preseason where we have players available and training won't be better for improvement and team chemistry for any player that joined the club for the 2023 season.

I feel like Grundys attitude and personality might have also contributed to them showing him the door...

Ollie Wines to Geelong as part of the Sav trade picking up a bit of heat from what I've heard the last few days. Not sure I like it much but more than one person attached to the club has said it's a strong possibility of happening.
If he comes for cheap, I would take him. He fills a role in the midfield that we don't have, and I would back us in to get him into form. He was pushed out by some excellent young talent at Port and stuck on the wing. Remember that Selwood didn't look crash hot a few years ago where there was a few games we had him HFF.

But while he would contribute next season immediately we would still need a younger, better midfielder to contend.

Frampton might be the worst premiership player I’ve seen.

I agree he is close to the worst i can remember in my lifetime. Others might remember further than that.

Frampton might be the worst premiership player I’ve seen.
That’s a shallow analysis, McCrae tasked him to shadow Andrew’s everywhere and Billy delivered.
HA had no influence on the game when Frampton was on him and his low possession count and zero intercepts kept the ball on the ground and brought Pies smalls into the game.
He could have made more of his opportunities but he played the rôle perfectly that he was selected for.
He’s a ripper kid and will dine off this for a long , long time👍

I dont really see it.
For starters wines is contracted to 2026 and likely their next captain as soon as next year.
I dont see why he would want out when hes settled there.
Secondly at 29 hes unlikely to be still around for our next big flag push in 3-4 years, if he was 26 id agree it with it but i dont see a fit.
If port were dumping him cheap sure but they would want sav and a 1st for wines and theres no chance id agree to trade our r1 next year.
I dont see it happening.
