That’s a shallow analysis, McCrae tasked him to shadow Andrew’s everywhere and Billy delivered.
HA had no influence on the game and his low possession count and zero intercepts kept the ball on the ground and brought Pies smalls into the game.
He could have made more of his opportunities but he played the rôle perfectly that he was selected for.
He’s a ripper kid and will dine off this for a long , long time👍

Where are you getting those stats from. Andrews had 9 marks and 8 intercept posessions and dominated the air after half time. Whatever role frampton was supposed to fill he failed.

Again, we learn that gun key forwards are not the key difference in big finals.

We are in trouble against Collingwood next year. Our backline much to big to contain their small forwards

I would say small lockdown defender is a need

I think if we have some fit mids bowes will play that role next year. But i agree long term we need one as bews is on the decline and we just delisted whyte.

Don’t really understand going after Goldy. Granted he’s free, but one of the reasons they traded Grundy was because they were happy with Cameron and Cox rotating ruck/forward. You can’t have that balance with Goldstein there. Then there’s obviously the age thing

Cox is 31 and realistically would have been in the 2s if they didnt have injuries.
Goldy is older but better than him.
I assume their plan would be goldy rucks and cameron becomes 2nd ruck/fwd and cox and spud frampton go to the 2s.
Given they probably only have 1 year of pendles left i can see why they would.

Will have to check but my impression was a lot of those were when Frampton was on the bench.

I feel like Grundys attitude and personality might have also contributed to them showing him the door...
Personality certainly could have something to do with it.

His agent absolutely pushing the Pies for every possible cent he could get him cost Grundy a flag.

Reckon if he took a haircut coin wise he might have been able to stay.

Sure he is entitled to his contract... but in the end of the day when the guy's career is over I'm not sure if those extra few dollars will have been worth it.

His agent also would have backed him up with going to the Dees.

In the end, he will get his $$$ but he has missed a flag and is fast becoming a hot potato ruckman.

I dont really see it.
For starters wines is contracted to 2026 and likely their next captain as soon as next year.
I dont see why he would want out when hes settled there.
Secondly at 29 hes unlikely to be still around for our next big flag push in 3-4 years, if he was 26 id agree it with it but i dont see a fit.
If port were dumping him cheap sure but they would want sav and a 1st for wines and theres no chance id agree to trade our r1 next year.
I dont see it happening.

Wines has already been captain and had it taken from him due to the wakeboarding incident...why would he be given captaincy again?

More likely that someone like Houston gets it, and Rozee and Butters are made joint VC's until they're ready to take over - ala Brayshaw and Serong.

You think just as Cameron, Stewart, Guthrie and Blitz hang them up we will be coming into a window?

I reckon we have been blessed for so long that people just think it'll happen again like it's just fait accompli.

If we snag a couple of seriously good players via FA or get lucky by drafting some guns with non prime picks it could happen.

Hopefully, we are still pushing for flags for a long time... but I won't be shocked if we go down for a while pretty soon.

I see it the other way..for me we arent winning a flag while danger etc are left (cameron maybe if hes still going at 33-34).
Our window is when we have a core mass of bruhn sdk both ollies clark knevitt conway holmes neale etc (plus whoever we draft with our r1s this year and next) at prime age (25-27) with a few older heads at 30 or so (which will be guys like miers atkins jack henry etc supporting them).
Wines doesnt fit that window.

Granted things can turn around quick and collingwood were 17th 2 years ago but id be surprised if we win a flag in 2 years.

Id only take wines if he was drastically cheap like tom mitchell was (pies gave up henry and 41 and 50 for mitchell and 25). But hawks had a reason to sell him cheap as they are rebuilding. Port think they are in a flag window so they wont sell wines cheap. Its a no from me.

I think he was great. He has barely played all year in the AFL team, called up for grand final and does the job exactly asked of him in a winning side.

Internally he will be getting rightfully praised.

The points made re our need to develop small defenders to play on dangerous small / mid opponents is true.

I think Bews is still best 22 for next year. Mullin clearly being developed to play that role. Bowes probably more time off half back and occasional lock down roles as well I think.

I wouldn’t judge too much on what we saw this year. A few blokes had to play out of position due to injuries we copped. Mullin will be much better with another pre season learning our game plan. And I think O’Connor still has a role down back.

If we boost our midfield stocks does Atkins spend more time down back?

Anyone who thinks Frankston was good yesterday was watching a different game to me. 2 possessions, drops an absolute sitter 25m out from goal at a crucial time and his opponent was huge in the second half. Collingwood were playing man short up forward for the whole game due to his ineptitude, and if they had lost he would have been absolutely roasted by all pies fans.

This is how much of nothing we got to talk about.

We are talking about Billy Frampton.

The dude is walking around laughing his head off.

I'll take 23 spuds if they play in a winning GF every day of the week.

Pies just won the flag and he is a premiership player forever.

They got the last laugh... everyone else, including us are losers.

Mmm I'd say Daniher, Dunkley, Bailey and Coleman were all much better.

Frampton completely took him out of it the first half. Worked his way into it the second half.
Fair enough. My closest are lions fans and that was their opinion.

Daniher was frustrating as. Basically conceded every ruck contest he was at.

2 men short up forward actually... Ginnivan was a very close 2nd in worst on ground

Haha come on, the last line is the only truth in these lines (and good luck to him too👍).

Kissed on the you what by you know who old Billy boy 😀.

Bowes might not have the speed. Holmes is the only one but hoping he develops elsewhere

I agree straight line speed might be an issue for bowes but he has the tackling and defensive intent.
Oconnor would potentially be the other option short term as he has the speed.
Long term they might want mullin in that role but hes not anywhere near ready

I agree holmes would make an excellent small back but the way the modern game is you need him as a transition metres gained player through the middle, hes way too valuable to waste in a primarily back pocket role.

As bews is ageing and declining i agree with you that we need to find another option longer term and need to draft one soon with a late pick.

He’s a backman/ruck who was played as a forward. Regardless, he tried his hardest and did enough to stop Andrews dominating the game.

Berry deserves far more criticism.

They only got the last laugh around the people that lack brains.

Most people who can critically think can weight their flag for what it is..not all flags are equal.

Still fair play to them.

Not convinced Bowes is up to it defensively tbh. I'd still back a declining Bews in over Bowes to keep an opponent accountable.

More plausible lockdown small/medium alternatives would be MOC and Mullin.

Yeah strange game from Berry, usually very reliable to play his role.

All that matters is who wins the flag... Pies won it.

It doesn't matter if it was by luck, 1 point or 150 points.

In history it goes down as a flag and I'm sure they are loving it just as we all would be if it was our club.

I doubt in 50 years people will look back at it and think... ahh I don't rate that one because Frampton wasn't a top player in the game or they got a handy advantage call.
