I can categorically put the Oliver story in the bin - at least from a Geelong perspective.

Not something we'd consider, and the terms would blow up our approach to cap management and player contracts. So it's a firm NO and priorities lie elsewhere. Makes for good fodder on these forums and in the media, but we won't be playing the game on this one. Melbourne are supposedly shopping a few "name" players around and the reason is that they want early draft access......early as in a couple of picks inside the top 10. They've long held interest in Harley Reid so if any deal is done, expect it to be with Eagles or North to get hold of those first few picks.

I don't see Clayton Oliver as a great list fit, just not damaging enough for what he would cost.

But im biased towards the strong explosive goal kicking type midfielders like Petracca. If you are going to mortgage the future they are the type that should be targeted
Depends on how desperate they’re to get reid
At the end of the day this is so they can get enough to pick swap.
Also getting the 1Mill off the books

Not so fast there PO.
Clarko as coach- enhances their future.
They have many concessions and great picks, as well as a building list.
They have an awesome KF and some great mids/hbf /rising stars already.
Not quite the basket case they have been.

Place yourself in Olivers position. Put aside sal cap and draft picks... where does he want to go? Where would he agree to go to?

I know a few people who are acutely aware of the Oliver situation. He's a bit of a loose unit, which comes as no surprise to anyone. He's not lacking any confidence but those close to him say its a bit of a front, and he's a pretty average kid with a bit going on behind the scenes.

Most of the stuff had been kept out of the media but this latest "trade story" will mean that a fair bit gets washed out in the media, and they reckon he'll struggle with that. A few people also backing up the story that things started to go pear shaped after he split and moved on from the long term girlfriend.

maybe a bit more to all this than meets the eye, although if he does have some problems, you'd like to think the club would support him, versus booting him out. The latter suggests the problems might have become bigger problems that are now a distraction for the club. As for the coach, there's a bit going on there if you believe what people say, and he doesn't strike me as the type of person who would be great at managing stuff like this.

Who knows what's true and what's not?

Realistically ...I cant see WCoast trading the chance to get Reid ..without getting Curtin ..plus one or two others.

North are probably going to make it plain to WC... that if they trade P1 to anyone else... they will take Curtin ..with P2/P3.

So how does Melb get Reid. Cant see it.

The Oliver Stuff does provide a great smoke screen.
now while everyone is looking over there lets get BAZ

typical Essendon to be involved though
The drafting policy at the bombers is horrendous,
as soon as someone of note is available they jump all over them
Dont seem to have a plan at all.

Nah, robbing from the future has to stop. It's a vicious cycle. Our greatest team was the result of a few good draft years which became the core of our 2007, 2009 and 2011 flags.

Our 2007, 2009 and 2011 were in the pre-free agency era. You can't use the same strategy in a completely different landscape.

Essendon ans Sydney seem to have unlimited cap space at the moment, linked to everyone and their grandma!!!

Clubs can stack it up so short term they have ... but one would think that down the track some clubs are going to find themselves in a squeeze... most clubs probably feel that the cap increases coming will help all.

I can see your point... but i think its a bit more like we are mortgaging our future rather than robbing from it. One can arguing thats dangerous.... as shown by clubs like the Pies when they trade away their Fr1 and it became P3. If you get enough from that purchase then its worth bringing our picks forward and risking that outcome.

You reported we're into Smith still the other day - question is, is the feeling mutual; and would the Dogs relent?

Nothings changed on the Smith front. I think it's generally accepted now that Geelong clearly wants him, there's an obvious link to Geelong for the player, and if not this year, then clearly we want enough up our sleeve to get him to Geelong when OOC. But there's no change to what's been discussed in here, and that if Geelong have their way, he'll make the move for this coming season.

General feeling from those I've spoken to is that we're close, but next season might be a stretch as we don't quite have the aces up our sleeve that we might need. Having said that, if a player comes out and says he wants out, and names his club, things can change very quickly and deals often get done. Strategically, I don't think it's in anyone's interests to flag this deal early. If it happens, that decision will have already been made, and it will happen very late towards the end of trade period and go right down to the wire.

Personally, and just my opinion, if it happens this year, I think it will potentially involve pick 7 and a player. In a simple world, pick 7 would get it done, but with Smith still in contract, I think Geelong have to pay "overs" and that might be the sticking point.

So what ruck are we getting.. No chance in hell we stick with Stanley if they are serious about competing next year. He is useless.
Apparently we drafted a kid in 2021 who was regarded as the best ruck prospect in that years draft. Haven't heard much about the kid but apparently he can play. Who knows, but with a good pre-season and a bit of luck, he might be our best ruck option we've had since Brad Ottens.

First name Toby I think?

Tony Cobweb.

The same kid who could not run out 1/4 of AFL football and got towelled up in his only appearance? Thats gotta be one hell of an off season if we are pinning our hopes on him....

Toby Conway looks a good prospect to me.
Stanley is still here.

Getting a 3rd ruck who can play might be optimal, but what ruck that can play is coming to be the third option?

At that point any ruckmen willing to come to the club and be that option might not be any better than plugging the gap with Neale, or split ruck duties with existing players.

We might be talking about a different kid making his debut. The kid I saw against Bulldogs had comfortably beaten the All Australian ruckman to half time, and finished with more hitouts than anyone else on the ground?

The switch with Lobb did kind of f*** him though but over all he looked like a legitimate future superstar

Good coaching by Beveridge. Lobbe got him and he was cooked later in the game.

I see Josh Jenkins (earlier today) said Conway has some elite skills and nominated him as a future captain of the club. Isaac Smith also commented post that Bulldogs game that Conway was going to be a star.

Kid just needs a bit of luck.

Premiership. Tick
B&F. Tick
All he may want is love and connection.
Clarko would LOVE him at NM.
He may want Mitchell/Hawks.
Who knows how a player thinks.
NO WAY can any of us put ourselves in his position.
DWAYNE has certainly opened up the Oliver discussion just now after an hour with him on GF day.

Then why did they need the Priority Picks?

Either they're a basketcase that needed 3 first rounders and two second rounders to stop them being one, or they have a good future and they never required them in the first place.

It's the same illogical argument the North supporters themselves put forward. You can't have both.

I think they're on the up too (and never required all those ridiculous concession) but I also think Clarry could pick 15 other clubs to play at, that would be in a much better position for the future.
why stop with PP's?
Did we stop at Danger?

Our 2007, 2009 and 2011 were in the pre-free agency era. You can't use the same strategy in a completely different landscape.

To me it is more the draft that is different.

Our teams from that era were built around the 99 and 01 drafts.

We had 7 selections in the top 50 in 99 and 6 selections in the top 50 in 01.

If you make finals now, with the extra teams, free agency compo picks, priority picks, academies etc diluting the draft you basically have 2 selections in the top 50 as your starting point at the draft.

Other clubs have also wised up so you don't have the likes of Carlton stuck in the past and giving up a pick in the 30s for a cooked Mansfield. To increase the draft hand considerably you need to give up some actual talent now.

The other thing is that the talent pool has shrunk considerably.

There were 87 selections in 99, 74 selections in 21. The last two drafts haven't hit 60. You used to promote rookies via the draft but that is offset somewhat by two extra teams picking now compared to then.

It is impossible to build a team via the draft only if you are getting 2, best case 3, picks in the top 50 every year.

Only way you have a hope via that path is if the AFL is effectively dishing you out 3 extra 1st rounders compared to everyone else North Melbourne style.
