Bailey Smith or Lord/Duursma…add in Harmes and TOB as depth guys.
I can definitely get on board with that!

If we are going young we need to go all in on it with guys like Lord/Duursma

If we want to go get a jet, Smith meets that profile
Dursma/Lord are a safer bet than Bailey Smith who may or may not get his act together.

Oliver is a very good player, the current talk of him being one of the all time great players for the demons took me by surprise.
Not taking anything away from him but that’s embarrassing for the demons if that really stacks up. He’s not even the best player in their team currently.
Ezachry, Petracca and Viney are equal if not better and Gawn is Melbourne's most important player.

Why on earth would Dees put up Oliver for a trade it would be like us trading danger during his prime. It's been said but Dees know something they're not sharing with the rest of us, attitude issue or body perhaps a combination of both has Dees spooked with his contract length?
The reality is - Victoria is a small place. If there is an issue with Oliver, it couldn’t be kept a secret. All clubs would know.

It appears that Oliver is unhappy with them, they are unhappy with him (happens in workplaces) and they see an opportunity to get some picks to bundle together to get Harley Reid (I remember Gawn alluding to the fact that they wanted this kid and the recruiters were working on it). Plus they free up cap space.

I would rather make a play for pick one than trade for Oliver.

Its working within the achievable and the desirable.

I personally think Smith is the right balance. If he only cost us our P7 ..he is a known pnp that would be a good fit. Oliver would be expensive if he wanted to come to us. P1 is in the hands of West Coast. They are going to be offered the world for P1...and even then they may not trade it unless they can get everything they want. Our P7 would not do that this year

Lord showed some glimpses of talent in the finals and I’d be keen to have him on our list. But he’s at a similar stage to Neale and plays the same role.
If Lord came in they’re both competing for the same spot next season
. They’d both already struggle for games with a fully fit team. Hawkins, Cameron, Rohan and Henry will be ahead of them and they’ll need to find games amongst that group, plus some ruck etc.

I can’t see how they’re selling that role to Lord at the moment, except to say to him spots will an open up but they will at port as well.
Esava for Lord would be very risky from our perspective anyway I’d want something else added. Barring injury Esava will play every week for Port and play a good role. He’ll still make some mistakes as he’s learning that role but he’s a lot less of a risk than Lord.
Neale is no guarantee to make it at all, and by having lord or anyone else it would give healthy competition and a better chance of one of them making it.

Unless you are confident of a young star in the wings, you should never be hesitant because of creating competition for a spot.

Teams protecting assets past the Tasmanian team's entry to the comp.
You watch… honestly wouldn’t shock me if the Tasmania entry the AFL casts it crystal ball and sees that no gun players are out of contract those years, so they go and make exemptions or loopholes for them to poach contracted stars.

The AFL won’t take it lightly if a new franchise has no availability to poach elite markee singings

They'll give tassie enough ammo to trade for players IMO ala G Ablett to GC

Losing Garry ablett jnr in his prime for two midfirst round picks…. Honestly the biggest screw job in modern history. Yes hawks lost Franklin for pick 19, but I don’t see ablett abs Franklin being on par with all due respect to Franklin.

Franklin is a great of the game and a top 100 all time listed player, but ablett is arguable GOAT and future team of the century material

O Brien is fine at VFL level when he can just float across the contest and intercept everything, if we had to rely on him to be a genuine key back we are in real trouble though.
He is cover for Jack Henry, and potentially Stewart as the Intercept marker. But yes, he is just break glass in total emergency KPD. We will need a KPD in the draft.

Don't think it's possible with our draft hand and players we can trade.

Franklin kicked 486 goals for Swans, that's a pretty sweet deal for Pick 19! Cheaper at the trade table and probably contract value than Ablett Jnr too.

Best case would be to get Oliver, almost at any cost.
But absolute clear second best case would be for us to use pick 7 to help facilitate the Oliver trade for another club where we can push for overs.
Maybe Smith and a pick back for 7 or something like that, if he would chose the dogs for example.
We should stay interested in whatever the outcome is and look to be a player in it.

Technically I believe the contracts for players make them employees of the AFL and not the club.

Might mean the club has little legal standing anyway

Maybe the Danger rule is a realistic option. He suggested one player from each club... contracted or not would be able to move
