As we are now getting into the season and we are starting to get a bit more serious with discussion, seems a suitable time to post the following as it's repeatedly shown itself to be a value reference tool in trade & draft discussion

And as per normal, thanks to Lore for putting this together - always a fantastic reference tool

And yes this post is now stickied - makes it easy to keep track of (can easily reverse this though if needed)

To be honest, we're going to get a good player regardless. Not sure we can go wrong.
You definitely can go wrong.

Hopefully whoever we take, in a couple of years we are not looking back thinking.... damn.

We take Clark and he ends up a solid battler and pass on Humprey and he turns into Petracca.
We take Tsatas and he turns out to be Farren Ray whilst Clark turns into a Selwood type.
We take Humprey and he just doesn't make it and Tsatas becomes a running machine jet winger or Whitfield type.

All these kids could turn out good, bad, average, or a mixture (most likely).

We just gotta hope that we make the correct call... be it the popular one or not.

Only in time will we know what the result actually will be... But you absolutely can get it wrong and plenty of clubs do.

I'm 100% gonna be happy with whoever Wellsy selects. I prefer Tsatas slightly over Humphrey & a fair bit more than Clark (he's a mad magpie supporter and I think he'll go to the Saints fwiw) and If we trade back for Ed Allan or Jed Busslinger and pick up an extra pick I'm happy with that also. I just see this draft and trade period as an enormous win especially since The Irish Jet Burner Oisin Mullin committed to the club. Earlier I suggested that MP was the pick and it looks like he's going top 5 so now I have no expectation he falls to us. Monday night is gonna be fun, it's been a while since I was this excited for draft night.
I keep puzzling over why we traded out all of next year's picks and wonder if it's because we are chasing a free agent and don't want a repeat of the Cameron trade. If Doedee is the target - and looking through the list if those available he seems the most likely - then Busslinger might be of interest.

Humphrey doesn't interest me because he is so ready-made; nowhere to go. Clark seems solid rather than outstanding. Nor can I see us going Allan. He has come out of nowhere on the back of the physical testing at the combine but it doesn't say much about his ability to play footy.

My preference is Tsatas; if he is not there then (and I'm shocked at myself for saying this because I've been desperate for a pick this high for about a decade and a half), I can see us splitting the pick and going something a bit more speculative like Hewett and maybe even Busslinger. A good deal might be there .... not least if we have managed to convince someone a bit below us that we are very interested in who they want ...

It's because we used them to satisfy next year's requirements this year, ie a year in advance, with obvious benefits.

All good points. But that applies to every pick and the development that goes in to the them, their ability to cope with the demands of the AFL, so many variables at play. But that's what makes it an inexact science, but also what makes it so exciting, that hope and optimism combined with the uncertainty.

Knowing full well we had 1 or 2 blokes lined up in Free Agency or a Restricted fellow wanting to head to God's country...
Sorry we have No assist to give (That scenario happening?)

Was trying to think of examples of overlooking local talent for somebody else in the same draft range.
Dunno off hand.
Maybe Ned McHenry?? Tom McCartin?? Worpel?? Sean Darcy when we took Parfitt instead but Parfitt is as good be it different positions.
Cockatoo over Hugh Goddard Phew... bullet dodged lol. Another Falcon flop.
But... I know we should have over looked Darcy Lang, Billie Smedts and Cooper Stephens all pretty disappointing TBH considering they were all first rounders albeit late ones.

I understand that. We get the player we wanted (although Chris Scott himself was critical of Henry for having 'nominated' the Cats, I think in his mad Monday interview.) But 38, 48, 55 and a future second (call it 40 after next year's flag and a couple of father sons) is still a lot for Pick 25 (I'm not counting the future 4th). I know the points calculator is an imperfect measure but it's 1440 odd to about about 750.

When something doesn't seem to make sense, I like to try and think about why it might make sense from a different angle. chasing a restricted free agent who is matchable might fit the bill. Or I might be a hundred miles off 😬

Where was Scott critical of Henry nominating us?
I’ve never heard anything like that and highly doubt a coach would be negative about a player joining the club.
Scott would’ve known he wanted to come,
Can’t play dumb to that

Critical was probably too strong a word. Bemused might be better.

Extra little piece on us from Twomey's draft:

During the trade period the Cats kept a pick out the back – could they have their eye on a draft smokey? It's almost in Geelong's remit to take a surprise late in the piece. The Cats have nominated father-son Osca Riccardi, the son of former star Peter, and Next Generation Academy small forward Ted Clohesy as rookie options, so they will get priority access to them if they are undrafted in the national intake. Geelong has been linked to Joe Richards but it appears unlikely he will get through to their second pick. Tasmanian ruckman Cam Owen could be there, though, and shapes as a chance, as does tall forward pair Phoenix Foster and Jovan Petric. Midfielders Mitch Szybkowski and Billy Dowling are others who could be looked at deeper in the pool.

Twomey's phantom is a weird one... Normally he is pretty accurate so it's hard to knock him.

The top 10 or so is basically very similar to what lots of us were saying weeks ago, with guys like Ginbey/Poo going after our selection.

But... over the last week or so all the talk has flipped that Ginbey/The Poo are strongly looking like going before our pick and therefore potentially having a Tsatas and possibly Humprey being available when our pick comes about.

But Twomey seems to just go back to what it was looking like and few weeks ago.

Anyway, there's so much ducks and drakes possibly happening and with a chance of some pick swaps happening, It might just be a year Twomey is a bit off.

All this talk of Dons & Hawks loving the Poo but him getting to #10? Twomey should know more than more but yeah I'm not sure.

All I know is I expected Clark to be available for us the entire time and it's just a matter of time before we find out what happens.

If I'm putting my life on picking who we will take... I'd go Clark (seems the safe option, although not my preferred).

Just hoping Humprey slides to us and we pounce (like a CAT).

It has a 2020 feel to it doesn’t it, where Twomey was baited and did horribly in his mock draft.

Those three (Lang, Smedts and Stephens) were questionable calls at the time. Everyone on this board was either filthy with it or in the “I guess in Wells we trust” boat. Looking back though, there wasn’t much quality selected after their respective picks.

Definitely an element of truth to that I absolutely agree. You’re going to miss big or get an absolute cracker which we have done over the last 16 years. However we are probably running at 50% with the top 10 picks. Mackie and Cockatoo were complete shocks.

No right or wrong but it’s different why we do. I wouldn’t be shocked one but if we took Ed Allan or Ginbey or Busslinger.
I just checked and cal twomey had cockatoo going pick 15, so not sure picking him at 10 is a complete shock?? Said a dozen clubs visited him after his BOG grand final game.

All I can find was this for Mackie, whicj suggests he may not have been picked that early either

Geelong’s best-kept secret of the National AFL Draft was its decision to select exciting young South Australian Andrew Mackie, although the Cats were not the only one looking to snare the talented, athletic utility.

Although many believed Mackie, 18, was a smoky of the draft, he was quietly being sought after by many clubs, including the Western Bulldogs and West Coast, but was pounced on by Geelong at No. 7 in the draft.

Mackie knew he was quickly climbing the rankings after several clubs were trying to keep a lid on him. The Glenelg youngster was the standout performer at the South Australian state-based screening sessions
.

So not sure how much I buy into the idea geelong likes to nab some unknown diamond in the rough with its very early picks, i dont think there is really any truth in that. I think we have certainly tried to roll the dice with late firsts and early second rounders, which is understandable to take the risk.

Sounds like GC is either Humphrey or Ginbey. I think it’s:

ESS: Phillipou/Tsatas
GCS: Humphrey/Ginbey
HAW: Phillipou/Tsatas/Clark
GEE: whoever is left from that five, excluding Phillipou
I think phil and tsatas are the two ess and hawks are both trying to work out, with the latter sweating on what the other does. Personally it sounds more like philipou is who they both want tbh... Just my hunch. Might see hawks pull a suprise and go clark if ess go philipou

Very, very surprised by Twomey's phantom...it really does have a touch of 2020 where he's not sure what's gonna happen - just like everyone else - and has gone with what is safe. Gonna be really interesting to see how he goes when Monday rocks around

I would be happy with any of the below

1. Ashcroft
2. Wardlaw
3. Sheezel
4. Cadman
5. Clark
6. Humphrey
7. Phillipou
8. Tsatas
9. Ginbey
10. McKenzie
11. Allan
12. Busslinger

Therefor I'd be happy to trade picks 7 and 58 to the bulldogs for picks 11 and 21.
My dream scenario to play out would be landing somehow clark or tsatas and also snapping up the 199cm key defendee hayes.

Would like to pair him with dekoning 10 years. Would have our back half almost sorted for the next decade with dekoning , hayes , henry all around for the next decade, then you have MOC still a good age, which makes our defensive transition beggining to look alot smoother.
